They are showing a lot of promos for the new Hollywood Squares.....it really looks bad......and they make it even worse by featuring clips from the original show.

DR JOHN G - may be Ethan Hawke is going to walk on his knees like Jose Ferrer in Moulin Rouge when he plays Lorenz.

In the early 1970s, a series of tornadoes struck Louisville. We stayed in the basement most of the day. Back then, we didn’t have a TV down there, so I was bored silly. But we were safe. A couple of tornadoes have passed near my house in San Antonio, forcing me to hide in the bathroom while that train whistle sound passes by. JB does not like that noise anymore than I do.

Yes we had tornado scares as I was growing up...spent some time in the basement.

A tornado did come through Mooresville in 2020 and took down a building on the corner of Indiana St & Main Street.

It had started as a bank....then was a furniture store....and finally ended up as a video store....

TOD

One actual evacuation, or forced move:

In 1981 I moved into a single (studio, for you east coasters) apartment in Palms, next door to Culver City. My ultimate goal was a particular apartment complex in Redondo Beach, but that involved a waiting list and this would be in a convenient enough neighborhood until I got into the place I wanted.

I was on the second of two stories, and about six months in, I was awakened in the middle of a Sunday night by yelling and commotion, and when I got outside I found that the downstairs neighbor's place had had a Molotov Cocktail or some such thrown into it and their place was on fire. Another neighbor and I ended up taking refuge crouched behind the laundry machines near the rear of the building while hearing gunshots out front. That's the one time I've had to feel scared like that, but we were safe (I believe no one actually got hurt) and the police arrived and the bad people (apparently someone carrying a huge grudge against the downstairs neighbor) were gone. The fire, which had been contained to their apartment, was out, and that was that until morning.

In the morning there was considerable smoke damage in my place, and there was no question I'd have to vacate. The management company around the corner on Motor Ave. was in charge of a lot of apartments in the neighborhood (they still are, I see), and were able to get me into another unit right down the block. I moved that day, and took a great deal of my clothing to the dry cleaners. I was able to clean up most of the other items fairly well myself, a couple of which were framed lobby cards, one being my Hitchcock-signed Rear Window which fortunately survived beautifully.

The second place was okay, same type of unit and all, but it had a lousy a/c unit that they never did properly fix, and the first apartment would have remained more desirable to me for other reasons as well, including the nice neighbors (not the ones with the fire). Anyhoo, after a year or so my name finally came up on the waiting list and I had a VERY happy move into The Village at Redondo Beach. The apartment management's insurance company refused to honor the big dry cleaning bill, and I hadn't yet discovered renter's insurance, so I was out a few hundred bucks for that. The clothing came out beautifully, though.

Scary natural disasters would be:

One tornado scare in the year that I was living in Schaumburg, IL. I was out driving around, and took refuge in Woodfield Mall. As I recall, that relatively small tornado amounted to nothing in that area.

I felt many small earthquakes during my years in L.A., but the only one I experienced that amounted to anything was the Whittier in 1987, and I had no damage. We did find some things knocked over in our office -- which, in a stunningly beautiful coincidence, was in the buildings a block east of Wilshire and Western that had been featured in the movie Earthquake.

In current times, there was the "macroburst" with embedded twisters that did so much damage here in 2018, and the winter squalls of a year ago that at least got us a new roof. A couple of months ago when this area was in a severe drought condition, I felt, for my first time, some of the fear of fires just like in California. So, wind and fires, two incredible sources of fear that go so well hand in hand.

Elmore’s story reminded me. While I was on Christmas break and sleeping peacefully at my mom’s house, my sophomore year of college, my dad woke me up to let me know the house in Athens, GA, in which I lived in a basement hovel, had burned. The girl in the basement hovel across from mine, who had her problems, had passed out while smoking. Had it not been Christmas break, I guarantee I would have fewer than 11,000 posts on here. When we drove an hour back to see what remained, only a pair of nail clippers was recognizable of all that I owned.

My sister and I will probably finish up the glop today.

With the two pizzas from Saturday and the glop - the scales show me that I have gained 4 1/2 pounds....

So I shall have to do some work on that next week.

I hate to think what the scales would have said if I hadn't spent more than 40 minutes shoveling snow.

Think of it as gained muscle from shoveling, JRand.

Yes, there is work to do:  Get rid of that scale.

The Mrs got me a fancy scale for Xmas that tells me way too much. I’m happy just to be losing weight. Plus I’m not downloading a damn app for a scale.

I always enjoy hearing DR Elmore's and DR Ginny's stories from Oxford and nearby locations.

I thought it was a beautiful place even though I have only one small memory of being there. It was on a visit from L.A. during which I was to play a few piano rehearsals for the May Festival. I drove up to Oxford to accompany a choral rehearsal of Berlioz's La damnation de Faust. Levine conducted that rehearsal, and it was just a great little visit to a beautiful place on a beautiful day.

That got me curious as to who the choruses were:

CCM Chamber Choir and Chorale
Miami University a Cappella Singers, Choraliers, and Men's Glee Club
Westwood and Rockdale School Choirs

Regine Crespin, Kenneth Riegel, Michael Devlin, Larry Minth, and... oh my, my first time to hear one Kathleen Battle.  :)  This was 1974.
