Elmore’s story reminded me. While I was on Christmas break and sleeping peacefully at my mom’s house, my sophomore year of college, my dad woke me up to let me know the house in Athens, GA, in which I lived in a basement hovel, had burned. The girl in the basement hovel across from mine, who had her problems, had passed out while smoking. Had it not been Christmas break, I guarantee I would have fewer than 11,000 posts on here. When we drove an hour back to see what remained, only a pair of nail clippers was recognizable of all that I owned.

Wow!  Thank goodness you weren't there.

Scary natural disasters would be:

One tornado scare in the year that I was living in Schaumburg, IL. I was out driving around, and took refuge in Woodfield Mall. As I recall, that relatively small tornado amounted to nothing in that area.

I felt many small earthquakes during my years in L.A., but the only one I experienced that amounted to anything was the Whittier in 1987, and I had no damage. We did find some things knocked over in our office -- which, in a stunningly beautiful coincidence, was in the buildings a block east of Wilshire and Western that had been featured in the movie Earthquake.

In current times, there was the "macroburst" with embedded twisters that did so much damage here in 2018, and the winter squalls of a year ago that at least got us a new roof. A couple of months ago when this area was in a severe drought condition, I felt, for my first time, some of the fear of fires just like in California. So, wind and fires, two incredible sources of fear that go so well hand in hand.

You were down the street from where I once worked at Union Bank on the corner of Wilshire & Western.

So, the guy whose picture of the fire that I posted last night also posted these...again, I don't know specifically where they were taken:

That is the Pacific Palisades Gelson's was destroyed in the fire.

I have never had to evacuate. I have worked in Red Cross Shelters for people who did.

Wow, I have never been in a position to do that.  I can't imagine what it would be like though I imagine you were very much appreciated.

I was supposed to go to Burbank this weekend for a meeting. We've changed it to Zoom. No point bringing people into town now.

Especially for a meeting you can do on Zoom.

TOD:

Earthquakes, evacuations from work due to bomb threats, hiding in basements during major storms, evacuations in hotels from fire alarms but no fires, and a tornado I relaxed through because I didn't hear the sirens.

A friend of mine in Santa Monica who is on an evacuation warning explained the water situation in Pacific Palisades.

"the problem with the city fire hydrants is apparently NOT a problem of HAVING enough water, but is instead a water-pressure problem getting the water up the hill to the Pacific Palisades hydrants. They were having trouble filling the tanks fast enough to get the water-pressure that would get the water uphill. So - they are not using the hydrants and are instead using water directly from the tanks and also from elsewhere in California."

Good for Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest for donating $1 Million for a fire relief fund.

The first year I lived in Florida, a friend evacuated me to his house when a hurricane was approaching. It was Hurricane Andrew, which went mostly to the south of us and ripped apart the land south of Miami and the Keys. I never had to evacuate after that. Two years after I moved away, Hurricane Charley destroyed the end of the street I had lived on.

I don’t think I am well, though I don’t feel sick. But I did sleep three hours and am, well, puny.

Please keep the vibes coming.  My nephew still has a home.  There is still a fire nearby which should be easy to put out except there isn't any water.

For Hurricane Irma, my Mom (then 89) and Dad (then 97) were in a shelter at a nearby school, North Miami Beach High - and they were interviewed about it in the Financial Times, at the beginning of the article, then the end of the article.

(I think this link should work.)
"In face of Irma Floridians prepare for familiar foe
Locals are stoic but braced for the worst as hurricane approaches US mainland"
https://www.ft.com/content/afdb89be-946d-11e7-a9e6-11d2f0ebb7f0

From the article:

"Naftali Landau was hoping to celebrate his 97th birthday on Thursday with his 89-year-old wife Rosalie at their home in North Miami Beach. But with hurricane Irma expected to hit southern Florida this weekend, the holocaust survivor was grateful just to find a safe spot at a high school shelter.

“We could have stayed home but here we get a lot of assistance,” says Mr Landau, who moved to the US in 1949 after being tortured by the Nazis in Poland during the second world war. “We don’t have to worry about running out of water or electricity.”

Then at the end of the article:

"At North Miami Beach High, as more and more people made their way to the improvised front desk, Denise Woncisz, a Red Cross volunteer, had some good news for Mr Landau: “I’ve found you two cots.”

I wondered if the fact that the reporter took an interest in their story helped them get the cots.

The heater has been in overdrive today. The rain continues to fall. Just a dismal day.

The Emperor Waltz is supremely silly. But Joan Fontaine’s wig seems to be worse than Barbara Stanwyck’s in Double Indemnity.
