A "P.S." to the post about the brief run of "A Funny Thing...". We had originally planned on "Guys and Dolls". Fifty people showed up for auditions. About 30 were cast. Two rehearsals later, we were getting about 15 people only, so we decided to do "A Funny Thing...".
And the brief history of the revival (!) of the Naples Little Theater (Naples, Italy) ended. The theater had been one of the community's main attractions for a couple of decades. It started in the late 60s and did very well until an earthquake devastated the local area in the early 1980s. While the local military remained in the same area, people who worked there moved further away into newer housing facilities. Travel took longer and folks, apparently, weren't interested in small parts if they had to be on the road 30 minutes or more just to get there.
FWIW: The military community was international. Lots of U.S. Navy, but also Brits, Turks, Greeks, Italians and civilians. The Naval Support Activity was near the NATO Allied Forces Southern Europe headquarters. There were more than 10,000 able-bodied, English-speaking people looking for fun things to do. Many lived near the bases and barracks were also within that area. After the earthquake, people moved into newer housing and newer barracks were built further away.
