And since I did just get home am up early this morning, I think I am going ahead and going to do a test run of the Eating and Walking Tour this morning.  And it looks like the perfect morning to do so.  According to the TV, it's only 52 degrees outside right now, and the projected high is only 68.

Yeah, Fall!

*Now, I'm just hoping that the rain that is forecasted for next Wednesday keep moving out of the forecast.

The idea that Mildred Pierce was so brittle that she had to be lubed...

I don't know what to say...I don't know what to say...

Maybe I'll just go on to the Media Check.

DR FJL - RE: Your "touch of sadness" post last night.

As we went through the past three days of auditions and callbacks, there were more than a couple of times when someone wonderful would walk in to the room who we could not "use".  It wasn't that they were bad - we truly had no one "bad" over the past few days - it's just that they weren't right for the show.

I play a lot of auditions.  I like to play auditions.  However, I don't think I could ever put myself in that position day after day, week after week.  That whole "built in rejection" that is a part of this business is something I don't think I could take on a regular basis.

I am fortunate, in a sense, to be a musician in this part of the business.  Most of the time, jobs are offered, and not necessarily sought out.  It's all word of mouth and reputation.  Yes, there have been jobs that I have "lost", but I never truly lost the gig - it was just offered to someone else, not me.  I did not audition.  I did not actively put myself on the line.  I was not "rejected".

I have many friends who are actors.  And I know what they go through.  And I admire them for that.

Consequenltly, one of my "missions" when I play auditions is to make sure the actor/singer has a good experience.  That I make them feel welcome, comfortable, safe.  Make them know that I want to play for them, that I like playing for them.  That I want them to give a great audition, a great performance.

One of the greatest compliments that I could ever receive - and have received - is "You are so calm."  Again, it's about making them feel comfortable.

"We" - the people behind the table - want to be able to hire everyone.  We want "you" to be good.  We want to have the "problem" of deciding between a bunch of people for one role.

Alas, when one person is picked, that means many someone else was not.

...And then when I see them again the following week at another set of auditions...  :)

As I've been wont to say lately:  It's easy when you care.

Hmm... Just checked the 10-day forecast - again.  It seems there might be a warming trend next week - at least compared to today's temps.  Upper 70s', low 80's on Wednesday.  Alas, some rain is still forecasted, but, right now, they're only calling for "occasional showers".  So...

Don't forget your umbrella!

DR Jose - As far as what actors do, I could never do it.  And unless someone breaks out and becomes a star, the audition cycle just goes on and on.

I know that writers also submit samples of their work to be considered for projects, and that rejection can hurt.  But at least it's not putting your physical self up for scrutiny the way actors do.

My feeling about the actors in your post really had nothing to do with those actors that were just not right for the part, just that there were several actors that were completely right for the part and wouldn't get the job because of an embarrassment of riches in the audition process.  Not being right for the part is just a part of the game; a reasonable number of actors being completely right for the part and not getting it just because of luck and such intense competition - that's the part that hit me in reading your post.

Media Check update:  I am now listening to a West Side Story recording that's sung in Japanese.  Other than that it was recorded in 1977, I don't know anything about it.  It is very lovely, though.

I'm up, I'm up, after not getting enough sleep - there are reasons I did not get enough sleep, and I'm quite annoyed about them.  I'm going to try to go back to sleep now, but I doubt it will work.

Dear Tomovoz, Thank you so much for sharing Derek's sister Maureen's letter with us.  It made me teary -eyed as well  I  have already been a bit in that state since early this morning as my neighbor across the street died early this morning, his son came over to tell me as I was leaving for work, the Funeral Home was just arriving to transport him

He had been fighting cancer of the spine.

Anyway as I was saying when I saw Derek's picture I just started sobbing.  I do miss his  silly little posts.  I find myself thinking aboyut him at odd tiomes.  Fi\unnyhow you can feel such a deep sense ofloss for someone you have only "met" via the internet.

Good morning!

Cool weather has finally come upon us. I took my walk in a bracing 57 degree morning, and it was deliciously invigorating. Loved every minute of it.

And our high today is only to be in the mid-70s, so I am a happy, happy camper.

For the culmination of Spirit Week at her school this week Victoria left for class  wearing a  T Shirt and sweatpants in the school colors (maroon & grey) with her hair which had also been sectioned and sprayed maroon and grey in two plaits, and the school initals and the Town's initials painted on either side of her face.

She still could not compare to the boy at the busstop with his face entirely painted in the school colors !

This Spirit Week  was actually a fun idea they tried for the first time this year,
Monday was Wear Your Clothes Backwards
Tuesday was Mardi Gras Day
Wednesday was Sports Team Jersey Day
Thursday was Crazy Hair Day
and today was School Colors Day

The kids really enjoyed it and classes went on as usual.

MattH, You mentioned that W & G was bleeped a couple of times.  Not so in NY! I guess it may have been a locl channel decision which leads me to believe that there was some sort of "delay"

I am so annoye I could not (and still have not) found the video tapes I know I just purchased.

They will probably fall on my head from some cupboard while I am looking for something else.  That's the problem with a house with no den, so everything is in the living room and must be hidden away (in a too small house with not enough storage)when guests are expected.

Tonight is the third episode of THRESHOLD, and after the show I will decide if it's going to stay on my must-see list or drop off.

I'll also be viewing the second episode of INCONCEIVABLE which I really enjoyed last week but which did dismally in the ratings. I have a feeling it will be canceled if tonight's ratings don't pick up some.

I'l bet NBC is regretting canceling LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY now. Of course, waiting in the wings is Dick Wolf's new series about young lawyers which will use many of the sets from TRIAL BY JURY.

Oh, I'm sure the show was running on a delay. All live shows now do that in light of fines and censures from the FCC after the Janet Jackson fiasco.

The bleeping did sound weird, so it may indeed have been a local censor in place. I haven't re-watched it yet so I'll be able to study it more closely and even go back and forth with it today. I do want to see it again.

And Megan Mullally really had hurt her foot and that's why she was on that golf cart contraption and using crutches at the bows.

For you West Coasters who watched WILL & GRACE, did Debra Messing and Sean Hayes break up during their "eyebrow" scene for you the way they did for us? Very curious about that.

Broken legs and a flashlight to DR TCB!

And broken legs to DR MATTH's OLIVER friends!

When I directed MY FAIR LADY for the last time, we closed the first act with the ball scene and opened ACT TWO in the study.  I think I got the idea from the Richard Chamberlain touring version....I am not even sure the Ball Scene was included in that production, the first act ending as they leave the study and Act Two opening upon their return.  Of course everything that happens at the ball IS sung about - but I missed the waltz.
