BK- For Paul Winfield, may I suggest the great scene in DAMNATION ALLEY where he and Jan-Michael Vincent are singing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken".

Then cut to the scene where Winfield is being devoured by giant hissing cockroaches.

Or maybe not...

It's not a good film, but Alexis Smith is in NIGHT AND DAY which is on DVD.

The performances of the music are certainly fine.

As Charles Pogue said, she's wonderful in GENTLEMAN JIM, but that's not out on DVD yet (supposedly slated for the next Errol Flynn box in 2006).

Good morning!

We have a REAL autumn day here. Beautiful blue skies and very cool, crisp temperatures.

Michael S-

The Gower CHampion book was slated to be delivered today, but as there is no mail service, I guess I will get it tomorrow. Looking forward to reading it. We will then have, if this book is any good, excellent biographies on perhaps the three greatest Broadway choreographers of the late Golden Age: Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, and now Gower Champion. (Tommy Tune wrote his own book which I wouldn't rank anywhere near the complete jobs done on Bennett and Fosse by their biographers.)

MattH beat me to the punch--yes, Night and Day is on DVD.  She looks grand in that film, so I think that is a great choice.

TOD:  DVD:  The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.  I just showed DS Betsy one of the most proto-Hitchcockian (that's a word, isn't it?  ;) ) moments I've ever seen outside of an actual Hitchcock film:  the sequence in the cars with the horn-honking (I won't say more in case you've never seen the film, but it is one great sequence, let me tell you that).

CD:  Celso Fonseca.  This guy absolutely channels Caetano Veloso, I tell you.  Smooooooth vocals and that ineluctable Brasilian beat.   ;D

Friday greetings!

Dayton Metro Library is not closed for Veteran's Day, nor are most other public library systems.  However, when I worked for a university library, Veteran's Day was what they called a "minimal staffing" day, when the support staff had the day off, but the librarians (who were considered faculty) did not.  That meant that we were expected to provide full service with very little staff.

Alexis Smith had a part in THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVES DOWN THE LANE, too, and I know bk HAD that movie since he wrote some thoughts about it a week or two ago. He may have traded it in, however.

I used to dread Veteran's Day when I was teaching. The ROTC from the high school would come over and have a memorial ceremony in the front courtyard (which I thought was a great idea and fully supported; the kids needed to know about the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms). Rather than use our closed circuit camera system to shoot the ceremony but let us remain in our classrooms and watch, we'd herd all 900 students into that courtyard where very few could see anything while trying to keep order and discipline with adolescents who couldn't see and were having to stand still for 20-30 minutes was something of an ordeal.

I suppose it was good training for them in a way, but there was always that potential for disruption and trouble. And there were always screams galore during the 21 gun salute, even though all the kids had been alerted about it prior to the ceremony.

Re Roald Dahl and child abuse:  this goes back to Dickens, The Babes in the Wood, even folklore:  look at Hansel and Gretel and the Pied Piper, not to mention the loathsome Children's Crusade.  John Boswell wrote a book on child abandonment in the middle ages.  Harry Potter is a victim of child abuse as well.  We're always cheering for the good victim who ends up in a tub of butter.

Thanks for all the great Alexis suggestions.  I have Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane and Night and Day, so that's good.  Isn't Lucy and Jessie on one of those B'way's Lost Treasures DVDs?  Or, can someone burn a DVD of just Could I Leave You off of That's Singing?

Are any of Paul Winfield's well-known films out on DVD?

For Al Freeman, I think I've got that film that takes place on the subway, The Incident - I think that's him, and, of course, I've got Finian's Rainbow and will use the famous slow walk bit where he's bringing Keenan Wynn the mint julep.

As expected, Ms. Judy Kaye received glowing reviews for her terrific performance in SOUVENIR. Also, as expected, most of the reviews say that the show is too long - that it's a one-joke wonder that wouldn't work without Ms. Kaye's wonderfully bad performance (in this case, her bad performance is a misnomer - she gives a great performance playing a really bad singer).

Despite the reviews, I just don't see it running that long...how in the world will they ever fill the Lyceum? I hope the audiences prove me wrong in this case - everyone should see/hear what Judy's (I can call her Judy - we've worked together in the studio ;) ) doing up there...

Oh, my...what a faux pas! I guess "ball of butter" does make more sense, but...geez! I've been mishearing Barbra for years now! Did anyone else think it was BOWL???

The Alexis Smith "Story of Lucy and Jessie" is not on any of the LOST TREASURES DVDs (yet). Perhaps the next go-round. (She did it years after winning the Tony for FOLLIES. They didn't do any FOLLIES numbers on the telecast the year it won 7 awards.)

I could burn Alexis' "Could I Leave You" on a DVD but only IF I can find that tape I recorded off some cable channel when it broadcast that show. I have hundreds of those old homemade videotapes, and even though I have them labeled, I'm sure the box is not labeled THAT'S SINGING. I called it something else, and it would take some time to find. Don't mind looking if no one else can accommodate bk, but I am not going to be back in town until tomorrow afternoon.

How soon do you need it, bk?

His Oscar-nominated role in SOUNDER was released on DVD, but I think it was a pan and scan release of that Panavision film.

Winfield is also in STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, and that's definitely available on DVD (in a couple of different versions!)

Need to go have a quick lunch and then get to packing. My ride is going to be here around 3 p.m.

Will try to pop back on this afternoon before I go, and if possible, later on tonight after the show.

DR vixmom - thank you for your Veteran's Day message.  My DH Richard is a proud Army vet and very busy today with activities centered at the American Legion post where he is a member of the Honor Guard (the guys who do military funerals).  They've also done school programs like DR MattH described, but they're only for 7th graders and are in the school auditorium - they are very dramatic and the students are quite mannerly and respectful.

Could a REALLY "really bad singer" pull off the part?  If  so, Broadway, here I come  ;)!
