Jrand: I was surprised that the lions were out - all the other African animals were keeping warm in their winter homes. :) The rock on which they were resting is heated and the keepers keep it dry and clean with fresh hay. They're big and furry, so they can handle the cold better than, say, a gazelle or giraffe, but you could tell George did NOT like walking on the snow. The tigers, however, love it. The ones at the Bronx Zoo are Siberian tigers, so they're built for such weather. I believe they may have Bengal (Indian) tigers on display in the Wild Asia outdoor section of the park, but that's closed off for the winter.

Sasha, the one whose pic I posted last night, is the male (there are four or five females) and he gets an exhibit all to himself for most of the year. He's 10 feet long from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail and he is absolutely gorgeous. I could sit and watch him all day. Next time anyone's in the City and wants to visit him, let me know!

I see Philip Seymour Hoffman has won another Best Actor award for CAPOTE, this time from the N.Y. Film Critics Circle.

Having seen CAPOTE, I'm not at all surprised he's winning these awards though I have yet to see some of the performances he's being selected over. Perhaps in the weeks ahead, I will be able to catch some of them.

Yesterday was unbelievable...I was cooking all day and preparing "Santa Claus" for co-workers.

I made a Pumpkin/Walnut Cheesecake, two coconut custard pies, and two sweet potato souffles (9 X 13s).

I prepped 21 "Chinese takout" containers (red and gold) by inserting candy and a Christmas ornament (the Christmas pickle) inside each one and closing the lid. I took them all to my office last night and placed one on each desk.  They are individually tagged To: XXX From: Santa.

This morning, I feel yucky.  I have taken an Airborne tab and have made a cup of coffee.

I leave here at about 10:30 for the office so I can help set up food.

Even though I don't fly out until Wednesday night, I feel like time is my enemy but I've got many things I want to do and a few things I have to do, and I guess I'm going to have to dump some want-tos so I'm not all stressed.  Stress leads to illness this time of year.

Jennifer:  About that post-nasal drip -- I take a strong allergen/sinus tab...like Allegra D.  I would consult a pharmacist, if I were you, if you do not wish to followup with your doctor after last week's illness.

DR RLP - don't do any WORK at the office!

EXACTLY!

I told my co-workers Friday that when I come in today, I don't care HOW PITIFUL they attempt to seem, I'm not doing one thing to help them

To bastardize a line from "Rosemary's Baby," I'll be in Dubrovnik, and I can't hear them.

Jennifer:  I take a strong allergen/sinus tab...like Allegra D.  I would consult a pharmacist, if I were you, if you do not wish to followup after last week's illness with your doctor.

I was thinking of going back to the same doctor. It's just i've felt fine during the day.  So i'm not convinced my throat infection has returned.

I did consult two pharmacists nearby. One said that i should take something like actifed (similar to sudafed). And that would dry out my throat a lot.  The problem with that is that when my throat already hurts at night, it sort of aggravates it. But it does make the drip stop.  The pharmacist suggested that perhaps it's the sudafed that was making my throat sore (one of the side effects).

The other pharmacist talked to me for a long time.  He wasn't convinced i should take sudafed since i had the throat infection and it would make my throat sore. He suggested flonase (which i already have and which i actually tried this morning). And he also suggested otrivin, which i also happen to have. He seems to think that the otrivin will make the drip stop.

I'm not familiar with Allegra D.  For sinus meds i have the advil cold and sinus (which i took when i got up) and the sudafed.

Had a lovely night's sleep and am feeling much better this morning.

Dan the Man - other artists HAVE taken on Perfect Strangers - Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley on the first duets album (or is it the second duets album?).  Great rendition, great orchestration.

"Beauty That Drives a Man Mad" from Sugar/Some Like It Hot.  Having performed the song transcribed from the version on the London cast recording, I do prefer that over the original Broadway version.  It has some different lyrics and a longer (and I think) better ending.

D'oh!  i forgot all about that one but now I'm hearing it clear as a bell.  It is lovely.

What sounds a little so-so is a Rita Coolidge/Rupert Holmes rendition I found on Amazon.  It's hard to tell because the clip begins at the mid-point crescendo and it gives no real sense of how the song is working.  I have my doubts because Holmes sounds tinny compared to Coolidge's warmth.
