the nudity present--that's the title of my next art house film.

And mine will be called "Entre Nudes".

I'm up, I'm up.  In a short while I shall attempt to get behind the TV and deal with the morass of wires to see if I can unplug and replug the VCR.  A major ordeal, but one must give it a try.

Art house release:  Point of Order - yes.
Bonjour Tristesse - no.  BT had a standard big-studio (Columbia) release and played major theaters.

Here's a question for those of you willing to participate:

What does the term "white trash" mean/imply to you?
We have two waste paper baskets in our house.  One is for all the colored paper, and one is for the white trash.

More seriously, "white trash" is a demeaning word used by der Brucer's daughter to indicate people she considers to be of a lower status than she.

Last night's "Surface":

NO SPOILER!!

Did I understand correctly at the end that the series has only two more episodes?
Der B and I are also puzzled by this.  Either the series is going to end with one tremendous cliffhanger (quite likely) or they are referring to two more eps this season (less likely).

And now, off to work I must go!

I only know BONJOUR TRISTESSE from its DVD release, but it sure is ARTY!  I am not surprised it had a major release....but I fear it didn't do very well at the Box Office!

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I somehow slept in until 11:30... Guess I needed the rest, sleep.  Well, at least I'm already on San Francisco time, so... However, since I have a Noon matinee tomorrow, I should save my "San Francisco" time for San Francisco...  Whatever that means.

White Trash, hmmmmmm.... probably nouveau riche, uneducated, colorless posers. Blonde bimbos, like Paris Hilton, who inherit wads o' cash, and get famous for being famous. No talent, no brains, no heart - if they died of a heroin overdose, nobody would notice... is that anywhere close?

Hmmm... As for Art House films... Most of mine would be foreign films... And I saw most of them at the now-demolished art house in Georgetown.

"Un Coeur en Hiver"
"Like Water for Chocolate"
"Cinema Paradiso"
"La Lectrice"

More recently:
"A Home At the End of the World"
"The Brown Bunny" - NOT![/b]  -If that's art, and Vincent Gallo is an artiste, well, then I'm getting out of the biz.

More seriously, "white trash" is a demeaning word used by der Brucer's daughter to indicate people she considers to be of a lower status than she.

Yes, it is quite often used in this way.

Its origins are interesting: The phrase was used by slaves in the South in reference to the poor whites who worked in the fields like the slaves did.

My own take on the term -- and what I mean when I use it -- is those people who have had every advantage of education and access to enlightenment and have chosen to ignore it and cling to prejudice and hatred.

But there are those who quibble over the phrase as being guilty of being as discriminatory as the people to whom it has been applied...that it implies whites are not trash unless so designated (which gets a big "duh" from me, since that would be a yes) but that it also implies everyone else who is not white would have to be, by virtue of the discriminatory word "white", also be trash.

So...that's why I'm trying to suss out what the phrase means to different peopl.

A derogatory term for low class/no class caucasians.  I hate it as much as the n-word, though it seems to be much more acceptable in usage.

As for White Trash... Sour cream, mayonnaise, potato chip crumbs, crushed corn flakes, creamed corn, Veg-All, canned green beans, French-fried onions, bacon, bacon fat, pork chops... In other words... Good Eatin'!

;D

*And I keep wondering if Volume 1 of the White Trash Cookbook is still available.  I always see Vol. 2 on the shelves, but I haven't seen Vol. 1 in a while.

Jrand, correct, Bonjour Tristesse was not a hit at the box-office.

When I was a kid (as those who've read Benjamin Kritzer know), one of my childhood theaters became an "art-house" venue, and that's where I saw all my first art-house films (well, that and the Fine Arts on Wilshire near La Cienega - that one has a different name but is STILL an art-house).  At the Lido, I saw Diabolique, The Red Balloon, several Fernandel films (which I enjoyed) and many others.  Of course, what was "art-house" here may have been hugely successful in the films' native country, like Cherbourg, and Sundays and Cybele, and That Man From Rio, all of which I loved.

And Cherbourg ended up in art-houses here in LA but started exclusively in a large theater - the Beverly in Beverly Hills.

DR Ron Pulliam - Seriously(?), I've always thought "white trash" had a Southern implication to it.  Basically uneducated.  Basically a derogatory term.  I don't think I really heard the term until I started school in Richmond.

However, I have noticed that it has been recently applied to someone who flaunts their lack of education, lack of modesty, lack of "general style", and garners publicity and money from their "efforts".  -And sometimes, these people actually do have a decent amount of education, modesty and style, and they're just putting on an act in order to garner publicity and make money.

OK... Time for me to do some light stretching.  I can tell that my muscles are starting to "lock up" a bit after the past few days of inactivity.  And then I think I'm going to go for a short run/jog since the weather is being cooperative.

Laters...

DR MattH, I sort of agree with what you wrote about last night's MEDIUM.  Yes it was good. And yes it held my attention.  But I don't think it's as good as it has been.

The dreams connection to the plot was more predictable than usual. And even the person involved in the crime was predictable.  The only thing i didn't expect was what happened to the mother. That part was interesting.

Still one of my favorite shows though.

I just read where the UPN and WB networks will both close down this fall, to be replaced by a single new network that is part of a new partnership between CBS and Warner Brothers.
