Oh....question for ASK BK day?

Who is your favorite NEGLECTED film composer of the 1950's?

Hugo Friedhofer.....Ronald Stein are a couple of my favorites.

Certainly Friedhofer, who certain people at certain film music sites, say they haven't even heard the music of.

WB Record soundtracks:  In addition to the ones named, please add the wonderful "Dead Ringer" by Andre Previn...

Friedhofer is certainly my choice for most underrated -- overlooked -- and least-recorded (compared to his output) film composer of the 1950s.  Friedhofer was a native San Franciscan.  No less a personage than Alfred Newman, music director of 20th Century Fox and 9-time Oscar winner, urged anyone who wanted to learn about film scoring to "study Friedhofer."  His peers were in awe of him.  And when I hear his scores, I share that awe.

Another...not as forgotten but getting there...is Franz Waxman.

DR JRand55:  "A Summer Place" was never issued on LP at the time of its release.  In the 1970s, Elmer Bernstein recorded a good chunk of the score for his Film Music series.  Two years ago (?), the original tracks were released on a Film Music Archives CD produced by Brigham Young University which holds all archival materials of Max Steiner's career.  That score is still available and can be ordered through specialty outlets, including Screen Archives.com, its distributor.

At least Friedhofer and Waxman won competitive Oscars so someone at some point appreciated their work.

That's more than can be said for Alex North or David Raksin. Still can't get over that Raksin's LAURA score wasn't nominated for an Oscar, and that was back in the days when there were 20 nominations in the category!

New definition for "Scary": a Doodlebops Halloween Special.

Or maybe that's a new definition for "Redundant."

Wow! A friend just sent me this picture from long, long ago. This was taken in 1982 during a production of SHENANDOAH where I played Jacob Anderson.

I have no memory of this publicity shot being taken, and this is the first time I have ever seen this picture. The shot must have been used in the lobby of the theater where we played, but I never saw it.

Der Brucer and I will be heading to the the toned DC of Washing today.  We'll be attending a reception/fundraiser for the campaign to end Don't Ask/Don't Tell.  Side effect - I'll get to meet some of the other members of USNAOut, a group der B joined last year.

Now, we just have to decide what to do between when we get into town and the time of the reception.  (Like just walking around that city can't be fun!)

DR Matt, your "father" in that picture looks familiar, but I can't place him.  Who played Charlie?

Today is Show and Tell at Work Day.

Tomorrow is National Clean Off Your Desk Day.

(Depending on how much you show and tell about today, perhaps bringing a cardboard box to work tomorrow would be prudent.)

bk - this isn't a question, but more a comment about "I Remember" - I think it's a good thing that you use the Diana Reeves recording just for the fact that she ISN'T theatre related.  You can talk about theatre music that "crossed-over" into the pop, jazz or whatever genre and how that used to be a big thing.  And you can always talk about theatre music that "crossed-over" that never really should have :)   Just my 2-cents.

Today is also National Molasses Bar Day.

Funny, I've heard of coffee bars, wine bars, beer bars...but wouldn't a molasses bar be, well, tacky?

Repetitive story telling syndrome department:  I saw Victoria Mallory in ALNM on Broadway when I was a mere child.  ;)  This was the same performance when a slightly (er...not) inebriated Glynis Johns almost got decked by the gliding birch trees.  :)

Dianne Reeves toured as one of Sergio Mendes' vocalists before she went solo.

A Summer Place was one of the films Warner Brothers offered to Percy Faith when they were trying to entice him away from Columbia to head their new record division.  Ironic, eh?

Other WB soundtracks I recall are Camelot, Gypsy and Finian's Rainbow.

Good Morning!

Hmm...  Just checked the run down of the Helen Hayes Awards nominations that were announced yesterday.  -The Helen Hayes are DC's equivalent of the Tony's.  Damn Yankees received noms for:

Outstanding Resident Musical
Outstanding Direction, Resident Musical - Molly Smith
Outstanding Musical Direction - George Fulginiti-Shakar
Outstanding Supporting Actor, Musical -  Lawrence Redmond (Joe Boyd)
Outstanding Supporting Actress, Musical - Kay Walbye (Meg Boyd)
Outstanding Leading Actor, Musical - Brad Oscar (Applegate)
Outstanding Leading Actress, Musical - Meg Gillentine (Lola)

Congrats to one and all!

However...

Personally, I do have to say that the omission of Baayork Lee's choreography and Martin Pakledinaz's costume design from their respective categories is quite glaring.  The Costume Design did have some heavy competition this year, so... But the Choreography category - again this year - did recognize the work of a small company in Arlington that does "wordless" plays/musicals/theatrical evenings.  I do appreciate the work that that company does, but I've always thought the "choreographer/director's" work was put into this category since the nominators aren't sure where to put it in the first place.  Heck, I'm not even sure.  Is it choreography since the actors are "moving"?  Or is it direction since all the actors are doing is "moving" - blocking?  -And usually without music.  So...

Hopefully, one of our nominees will snag one of the awards, and recognize Baayork's and Martin's work from the podium.  But...

Once again, Congratulations to All!

And speaking of Shenandoah...

The upcoming production of Shenandoah at Ford's Theatre just started rehearsals this week.  Scott Bakula is starring as Papa Charlie.

*Something tells me there should be quite the mix of fans at the stage door waiting for Mr. Bakula.

As for Victoria Mallory...

She was one of the stars of a "Christmas Spectacular" that was mounted in Richmond, VA, when I was in college.  -Actually, I was a member of the "community chorus" for the show, but had to drop out due to class conflicts.  -Which, as it turns out, was a good thing.  ;)  In any case...

I think it was called "The Twelve Dreams of Christmas", and it was being presented in the Carpenter Center, a classic movie/vaudeville house complete with a star ceiling.  The presenters were hoping to make it an annual affair, very much like the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  Big orchestra.  Big chorus.  Lots of dancers.  Lots of costumes.  Lots of money.  Alas, it never made it past it's first (and only) presentation.  Where was I?  Oh, yes...

Victoria Mallory was the female star of the show.  -And if memory serves me correct, the producers had originally lined up a more recognizable star, but she withdrew.  However, they did snag Van Johnson for the male lead.

And now I'm trying to figure out if I really want to do anything today.  The post-show laziness has truly set in.  And with a vengeance.  Of course, I think part of it is that I'm avoiding getting some work done, some work that has to be done, but...  In the meantime, I believe a bite to eat is in order.

So when do you start your Lestat rehearsals?

The cast started rehearsals in NYC on Monday.  I'm not officially on payroll until orchestra rehearsals begin in a few weeks.  However, I'm gonna stop by rehearsals every now and then just to keep myself up-to-date and in-the-loop.  And also just to give me something to do with my free time.  And to keep me off the streets, DR elmore.  ;)

So, I have a few weeks to get resettled back into NYC, and get my apartment space in order.  And get all my stuff in order down here in DC and Richmond.  Alas, no work means no income, but I've been saving my pennies, and I do have some audition days coming up, and those should keep me solvent.  I just need to make sure to keep myself "active" in all respects between now and my first day of rehearsal.  It's just way to easy to "want" to do nothing for nothing's sake.

I've been wondering about this whole "Bambi II" thing too.  I'm on a few of Disney's e-mail lists/subscriptions, and they really are giving this one quite the PR push.  It's just interesting that their target audience for "Bambi II" was not even alive when "Bambi (I)" originally came out.  Some not even when "Bambi" first came out on VHS.  -Remember VHS?
