Good morning!

Another cold, gray, rainy day here. No, no snow like many parts of the country got, but a dreary day nonetheless.

Seems perfect to have hot chocolate later on this afternoon.

Enjoyed the snow pictures from last night, DR Cillaliz. We didn't get any snow this year, but I'm not complaining!

Hope to get SUnday night's LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and last night's OLD CHRISTINE watched this afternoon. An ANGEL episode will probably be in there somewhere, too.

I shall now go stand by the door and await the arrival of COOKIES!!!

I recomend you take a seat, best possiblilty is me getting them off this evening (which means a AM pickup)  as they are home and I am 30 miles away at the office!

I am assuming all cookie receivers are ok with me sending them "no signature required" for delivery?   If you would rather have them delivered to offices instead of homes I'll need office address.  Let me know!  :D

Well, I'm awaiting the overnight delivery of the video of Sunday night's run-through of the show I'm supposed to run this weekend in Seattle. The Dancemaster told me several dancers were missing, and the men's choir had only 4 voices in it... but that the REAL problem is the Bulgarians' costume changes. Something like 7 minutes, for one of the changes... OY!!! Okay, I'll be the Bad Cop on Thursday and Friday! We'll rehearse the costume changes, until they get it down to 2 and a half minutes and get their behinds into formation in the wings. "Better! Let's do it again!"

David Hong is brilliant in perhaps his largest role as David Lopan in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.

He's also been in TV commercials lately as some sort of Chinese master teaching guys how to drink beer or soda or some such nonsense.

Along with the Space Shuttle and 9-11 the sight of the collapsed freeway during the earthquake in San Francisco stands out vividly along with the attempts to rescue people out of the crushed vehicles.

I can remember, also, the Kent State shootings when I was a wee twig of a lad...for some time after  that I thought this was a normal occurrence when one went off to college...I decided at that time that college was not for me! LOL!

These of course are all horrifying televised things that stick in my mind and likely changed my lifes outlook in some way or other...I am sure there are just as many positive things that I saw as well...but I guess it is the horrible things that tend to stay with you over the years.

All the likely suspects have been named:

the 1969 moon walk

the Challenger explosion

the planes into and the collapse of the Twin Towers.

I was home from school on the day of the Kennedy assassination, and I remember the TV was on in the den. My mom was cooking lunch and she heard commotion from the TV set but couldn't make out what was being said. I happened to be walking by the den door at the time, glaned in, and said matter of factly, "It's something about the President" and kept on walking. Little did I know what I was walking past!

All these memory jogs! Yes, Kent State. I remember it vividly. May 4th, 1970. I was a Junior in High School and I thought the country was rapidly going down the toilet. Shooting protesting college students was something we saw in the Soviet Union (remember them) or Communist Eastern Europe, not in the U.S.A.

The first time I heard Ohio (by Neil Young) after the shootings I was amazed and slightly obsessed. It became an anthem.

Ohio
Lyrics by Neil Young

--------

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

I also watched those weeks that the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. I had heard their records, of course (how could you not; they were played endlessly on the radio and by my brother at home), but I have to say I just never got it.

I know that makes me odd man out, but I went right back to listening to HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS and FORUM. I've never bought any Beatles record, not even the soundtracks to their movies, and I bought most movie soundtracks that had any songs in them at all.

And I wanna go home!

I forgot about the Beatles!  At last, a pleasant memory.  What I remember the most is the excitement on Monday morning riding to school and talking about the broadcast.

I was in grad school working on ONCE UPON A MATTRESS during the Kent State shootings.  Never saw any footage, only heard the news from the local papers and the student activists.  Is the FBI reading this?

Topic of the Day:  A myriad of events on TV that affected my life include

All the coverage on the assassination and funeral of JFK.

Seeing Oswald being shot on TV.

Hearing the bulletin that Marilyn Monroe was dead.

The assassination of Robert Kennedy.

The moon walk.

The resignation of Richard M. Nixon

Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record.

The eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Watching a live performance (on the Tonys) of Jennifer Holliday performing "And I Am Telling You" (had not heard of the show...was unaware of the show...did not know beans about the show before the telecast).

The explosion of the space shuttle Challenger just after takeoff.

9/11

And, of course, the national elections of 1998 and 2002 and their abominable aftermaths.

We had a rare snow day (it snowed maybe half an inch) in Atlanta on the day of the Challenger disaster, so I just happened to be home flipping around the dial...

I am most thankful to the TV networks for offering no distractions last night!

I re-watched "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and watched, for the first time in decades, "The Shaggy Dog."

A most satisfying evening.

When I taught, we had that closed circuit national news service Channel One piped into our classrooms each morning for their 12 minute broadcast. The week of the Challenger tragedy, they'd show that footage every day, and tears would well up in my eyes. It got worse every time I saw it. Now, whenever some news show pulls that footage from archives, I quickly switch the channel. I just can't look at it any more.

The original cast of OLIVER! I have the DVD of that Sullivan show precisely for that reason, not for the Beatles!

There is a swell Billy Crystal movie, about a real nutcase of a comedian - whose brother/manager finally gets him a spot on the Sullivan show - and it happens to be the show with the pop group on... and his spot is immediately following said pop group. What's the name of that film??? Oy.

Does anyone else seem to confuse Leelee Sobieski (mentioned in BK's notes) with Helen Hunt?  They just remind me of each other.

Whenever I hear or read of Leelee Sobieski, I think of Heather Donahue.
