There's a phrase I dislike which has become very overused by people in the past couple years: "It is what it is."

Re the topic of the day, here's a oldie but goodie, which vixmom probably would have posted if she weren't busy catching up.  :)

It seems two former classmates met at the tenth reunion of their high school graduation. They had not seen or spoken to each other for the past ten years and were using the opportunity to bring each other up to date about their lives.

“Oh! It’s just been wonderful. I met a handsome and rich man in college and we got married right away!” the first one told the other.

“My! How interesting!” replied the second.

“Yes! He has so many rich and important friends that he sent me to Charm School to learn to be a proper lady,” the first one added.

“My! How interesting!” replied the second.

“Yes! I learned my lessons so well that I am considered to be the Most Gracious Hostess of our exclusive country club.”

“My! How interesting!” replied the second.

“But, enough about me. What have you been doing for the past ten years?” the first one asked.

“Well, I also met and married a rich and handsome man in college and he sent me to Charm School, as well.”

“Why, that’s amazing!” responded the first. “What was the most important thing your Charm School taught you?”

“I guess the most important thing they taught me was to say, ‘My! How Interesting!’ instead of ‘Bullshit’.”

There are two words that one should never use.  One of them is swell and the other one is lousy.

Also I can live without hearing the phrase "at this moment in time..."

In time??? Where the hell else would a Moment be? Akron?

There are two words that one should never use.  One of them is swell and the other one is lousy.

Of course this was Professor Percy (Hans Conreid)  Livermore's advice to Lucy Ricardo when she was trying to learn to be a good mother.....he also added "okay"....whereupon Lucy said:  "O.....I mean....all right.  I was going to say 'okay' - that would be a swell way to get off to a lousy start."  ;D

The veddy odd construction, meant, apparently, to sound veddy educated:

He was so nice to she and I...

What, pronouns become subjective when there's more than ONE??? no matter the requirement of the syntax for objective case?

Actually, what I meant to say was that actually the actual word so many people actually say is "actually"  actually.

Good first day vibes for DR GINNY on her "new" job.

Thanks, DR JRand - it seems a LOT like the old job!  I did get some input this morning from my manager, though, that suggests that I might be getting more autonomy over my schedule.  That would be great!

My grandmother( who God bless her had to leave school after 6th grade to start working and had a son who rose to become CEO of a major conglomerate) used to try to speak "educated' so he wouln't be ashamed of her. She would always be saying things such as "I and Grace went to...."

The opposite offense drives me crazy. "Me and my friends...."

and using "goes" for "said"

So he goes "No Way"
and I go "No Really "

and he goes....well you get my point! :D

One of my most-HATED words...one which sets my teeth on dege...and one I wish I would NEVER hear again:

The mispronunciation of "mischievous" as "mischievious".

"Mischievous" has three syllables...and ONLY three syllables...miss'-chi-vus..with accent on the first syllable.

My teeth grind when I hear "miss chee'-vee-us"...because NO SUCH WORD EXISTS.

:D

Another "trait" I find a bit too precious is when someone takes a perfectly good noun and turns it into a verb!

"Messenger this document to so-and-so by this afternoon!"

Or, when someone takes a perfectly good verb and uses it in such a way as to make it seem ridiculous:

"We need to grow our economy a bit more to avoid inflation."
