Regarding the cloak and dagger stuff in film.  Recalling the film A BEAUTIFUL MIND:

SPOILER IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN "A BEAUTIFUL MIND"

I'd thought the screenwriter had gone nuttily commercial when the cloak and dagger stuff started in that film.

Of course, it turned out to be a delusion, as the movie then revealed!  I was dazzled then.

My sister was the screaming teenage Beatles fan in the 1960s. I liked a lot of popular music, but that phenomenon did nothing for me at the time, or even through college years. I began to enjoy listening to them in subsequent years, partly due to getting familiar with the White Album in conjunction with the book Helter Skelter with which I was a bit obsessed for a while. As an adult I've come to appreciate the bulk of their work to a much greater extent via the now-available reconstructed original mixes, none of which had ever been heard by us back in the day.

Annabelle and I made our patrol and she met the lesbians with the dog on the fifth floor. I had met one of them in the past walking the dog, and they're both really lovely ladies.  Annabelle was thrilled to be praised and petted.  Then she made me chase her up to the fifth floor, then she let me catch her, put her on my shoulder, and ride on the elevator to our floor.  I'm pondering breakfast and Thatch is begging for some deli turkey.

Would your sister have been one of the screaming fainting teens I watched with fascination when I attended a Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl?

Feeling as you did about them I found the audience far more entertaining.

I heard my first Beatles song when I was six years old on a little transistor radio. It was "Come Together". My sister and I thought the lyric, "hold him in your arms and you can feel his disease" was just the coolest thing! And that was the only Beatles song I ever heard on that radio because The Beatles broke up shortly thereafter. I think "Hey Jude" was a hit after "Come Together", but I don't remember hearing it on the top 40 station I listened to.

Billie's Gingerbread
From: Ruth Reichl, Delicious!
Makes: 1 cake

Cake:
Whole black peppercorns
Whole cloves
Whole cardamom
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 large egg yolk
1 cup sour cream
1 ½ sticks (6 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
2 large pieces fresh ginger root (1/4 cup, tightly packed, when finely grated)
Zest from 2 to 3 oranges (1 ½ teaspoons finely grated)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 6-cup Bundt pan. Grind your peppercorns, cloves and cardamom and measure out ¼ teaspoon of each. (You can use pre-ground spices, but the cake won't taste as good.)

2. Grind your cinnamon stick and measure out 1 teaspoon. (Again, you can use ground cinnamon if you must.) Whisk the flour with the baking powder, baking soda, spices and salt in a small bowl. In another small bowl, whisk the eggs and egg yolk into the sour cream. Set aside.

3. Cream the butter and sugar in a stand mixer until the mixture is light, fluffy, and almost white. This should take about 3 minutes.

4. Grate the ginger root — this is a lot of ginger — and the orange zest. Add them to the butter/sugar mixture. Beat the flour mixture and the egg mixture, alternating between the two, into the butter until each addition is incorporated. The batter should be as luxurious as mousse.

5. Spoon batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 40 minutes, until cake is golden and a wooden skewer comes out clean.

6. Remove to a rack and cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Soak:
½ cup bourbon
1 ½ tablespoons sugar

1. While the cake cools in its pan, simmer the bourbon and the sugar in a small pot for about 4 minutes. It should reduce to about 1/3 cup.

2. While the cake is still in the pan, brush half the bourbon mixture onto its exposed surface (the bottom of the cake) with a pastry brush. Let the syrup soak in for a few minutes, then turn the cake out onto a rack. Gently brush the remaining mixture all over the cake.

Glaze:
¾ cup powdered sugar, sifted or put through a strainer
5 teaspoons orange juice

1. Once the cake is cooled, mix the sugar with the orange juice and either drizzle the glaze randomly over the cake or put it into a squeeze bottle and do a controlled drizzle.

I would absolutely do so if this was still my Ashland group.  Our 10:00am meetings were also yummy.  This is more casual at 4:00pm in the club house.  I have baked for it or taken wine but only a few people eat the snacks.  I am not sure I even want the ginger spice cake, though it would likely freeze well since it has sour cream.  I wanted to make it when I thought it was a regular gingerbread.

Memorial Day greetings!  Laura worked at the golf course this morning while Richard and I lolled around her nice cool house.  She was home in time for lunch, then she and I played in her craft room for several hours.  I’m about to put baked beans in the oven for our Memorial Day cookIN - too hot for a cookOUT.

I don't think it hit 100 here, but it did monstrously hot. How did it go?

Back from a Turkish dinner. Excellent food. Cecil was able to get out without a cane and he drove. That was good.

We're getting together for Chinese this Thursday.

That sounds REALLY good!

My book group is reading DELICIOUS by Ruth Reichl.  It begins with the baking of gingerbread.  So far this cake is a theme throughout the book.  At the end (I peaked) the recipe is included.  I enjoy a good gingerbread and considered making the cake for the discussion.

I did a search to read the comments on the cake.  While they are very positive, I discovered this is really a ginger spice cake baked in a bundt pan, way too much food for our small group.

You should totally make this for the discussion. Even if you give the rest away.

Make cupcakes and freeze them, then you can defrost one at a time.
