Well, you've read the notes, the notes welcomed the return of The Randy Vicar, and now it is time for you to post until the randy cows come home.

So, this is funny.  I was on Amazon a couple of days ago and came across The Banana Splits Movie (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RVHFPRT/).  I guess it's a new title.  I have no idea what it's about.  Anyway, under the Frequently bought together section is this title paired with the special edition of Cruising (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SJHGNVZ/) with Al Pacino. :o

Well, I need to get some sleep.  The movie starts as 12:55, so I get to sleep in later than my normal work days, but then it'll otherwise be a long day.

Good night, BK, and have a good day, all!

T.O.D.

I've been watching several Betty Grable movies lately; thinking about her as a possible subject for one of my one-person plays.

She's cute.  She's fun, but I'm not really getting excited about her as a subject.  I guess what she had worked in the 1940s, but not today.

On the other hand, he personal story has some drama, and could work well in one of my plays.

Something to ponder....

Last night I watched MYRA BRECKINRIDGE which was quite the controversial thing back in the day....

It contains a lot of old Fox clips that add quite a bit to the fun.  I remember at the time of its release, Miss Loretta Young sued to have a clip of one of her movies removed from the film....I think she was successful.

Betty Grable....a lot of her movies seem alike to me...especially if you watch a couple in a row....but I kind of like:

How to Marry a Millionaire

and

Meet Me After the Show

She and Harry James made an appearance on the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour....but it wasn't very good.....

I have a quiet day planned.  Once I tidy the kitty issues, my day is wide open until 4:00, when I must prepare to meet my old friend Jim, with whom I did dinner theatre in the mid-1970s.  BY 1979, he had given up acting and turned to real estate, showing places to Mary Tyler Moore, and other wealthy folk, and living on Beekman Place.  When that bored him, he moved to Los Angeles, worked for Universal Studios, and now he's a producer, with the London productions of Dreamgirls and that Channing Tatum stripper show, and his big winner, Come From Away. He's been in Manhattan for a week, and we are seeing Moulin Rouge tonight.

Saturday morning greetings!

DR Ginny, take the hotel for all you can get.  When do you return to Ohio?

Time will tell, DR Elmore.  I thought about packing up and leaving as soon as we got back from the hospital Tuesday, but I’m glad we didn’t.  I’ve enjoyed what I could of DAR and the hotel staff, including the ice queen general manager, has had to look at me for several days.

We’ll start home tomorrow right after my stitches are removed at the local urgent care and arrive sometime Monday.  Our overnight stop will be determined by how early we get away tomorrow.

As Annabelle watched the birds from the lobby door, our 5th floor neighbor Maryann, laden down with several coffees and a small dog she was walking, came to the front door.  I left Annabelle sitting on the steps while I ran down to hold the door so she could enter.  Maryann was worried because she didn't know the dog's reaction to cats, and I was worried since, as far as I knew, Annabelle had never encountered a dog.  Maryann held the leash and walked the dog up the steps to the lobby, the dog and Annabelle calmly touched noses, and Annabelle then followed them down the hall to the elevator.  I was very proud of her.

If that's not bad enough, my step-son's wife had a surgical procedure yesterday and was sent home afterward.  Later, she was throwing up; passed out, so her husband called an ambulance.

Thankfully, it looks life she'll be okay, too.  Apparently she was just dehydrated.

Two in one day.  Wow!

I did something to my back. I woke up Friday morning and my lower back was really hurting. I am not sure if it was from lifting heavy things (which i did on Wed and Thurs) or from aquafitness that I did on Thursday.  I have been doing all kinds of things to help heal it. But I feel like I am making it worse.  If I probably do nothing it will most likely be fine by Monday.

I am off to meet my friend Jim.  The check i've been waiting on for three weeks and that was supposedly mailed on Monday evening did not arrive, which really pisses me off.

Dr. Mohr sent me an email about Stella's paint obsession and suggested I try wrapping the pipe with tin foil, so on my way home tonight, I'll stop at the corner bodega for some Reynolds Wrap.

Jane, I heard from a friend who just returned from the Alaska cruise on Celebrity Cruises. He said they were REALLY pushing to get people to spend as much money as possible, both the cruise line and the onshore merchants. I've cruised Celebrity and thought it was one of the better lines. Have you have problems like that?

It is why we prefer an all inclusive ship.  I don't mind the sales in the shops, this item then that item & at certain times. It is on the entertaining side.  What I mind is the constant push to buy the drink package.  We don't drink enough soda & the alcohol I like is more expensive & not included in the package. We took one Celebrity cruise & it was most annoying.   I suspect all the larger ships are like this now.  When we took our first cruise on Princess, when Bryan graduated high school, soda was always free.

We are looking at a small excursion trip to the Galapagos on Celebrity.  I had forgotten about the constant push to purchase the drink package.  I suspect though a small ship will be different than a big ship.

It's been a while since I last cruised and things do change, but I never felt under pressure to buy. It was there, yes, and I just accepted it, but it wasn't pushed down my throat. Things may be different now, or it may have just been the staff on my friend's cruise. I can see the attraction of an all-inclusive ship. That includes all drinks, anything else?

Moulin Rouge is deafening, heartless camp.  I don't think I've disliked a show this much since Xanadu.  That show was dreadful, yet it ran.  I expect Moulin Rouge might do as well.  People in the balcony were screaming their heads off and cheering at each bit of inanity.  I found the book camp and cliche'd with no sense of period or honesty.  The direction had no feeling of another time and place: Aaron Tveit's American character was no different than than the tall black actor playing Toulouse-Lautrec or the rest of the Parisians. They all seemed to be in the same American sitcom playing dress up.

There was a lot of overly busy pop choreography, and a clear fortune was spent on scenery, special effects, and rather ugly costumes.  Much of the opening, with Danny Burstein doing Cabaret's M.C., reminded me of "Big Spender" and the Roundabout's tawdry version of Cabaret. In the second act, when the Duke dresses up the whore for a day on the Champs Elysees, I was reminded of the "Ascot Gavotte," all musicals I would have preferred to be seeing.

Funniest moment? The end where the whore dying of consumption is bellowing a duet at the top of her lungs before she expires.  Anna Russell was funnier 60 years ago when she did the same nonsense in her opera parody, "Anemia's Death Scene."  I can't tell if Moulin Rouge hopes you will take the moment seriously or doesn't really give a damn.

I have several friends in the show who work very hard with little given to them.  The show is like going to a bakery, only to get the cake home and find it's all icing over a cardboard frame.

Food including the specialty restaurants that need reservations.  I believe it is Regent that includes many of the excursions.

I have no doubt I would hate every second of Moulin Rouge - I hate the movie, which I find tiresome in the extreme.  As to the screaming from the balcony, I'm beginning to believe that some of that is pre-recorded - I've heard that in many shows recently, ALWAYS coming from the balcony and always sounding canned.  Nothing would surprise me anymore.

Had a nice working dinner - grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and a side Caesar, with a few onion rings, too.  Given the low-cal lunch, I think that was all fine.

It wasn't canned, but I suspect it might be cued like the old TV show APPLAUSE sign.  The man sitting next to me in the mezzanine was right in there with the other screamers.

The producers are expecting a big hit.  The back rows of the balcony were selling at something like $195/ticket.  Who the hell can afford to see a show at that price?  I was taken, but I was appalled at the price of my mezzanine seat.

A popular art form that every New Yorker AND every tourist went to as just part of life, that so many bridge and tunneling making ordinary wages came to see routinely somehow has turned into an elitist world for the super-rich.

"The Producers" which started this was supposed to be unique, premium for only 50 extra-special seats.  It became every show so quickly, and suddenly a Broadway show just had to feel like an event worth $600.

That said, knowing all the pop songs before seeing the show in Boston, and having years in offices where pop music played that we'd suddenly fasten on a song we'd hear on the radio which we felt right then, I was so moved by what it was evoking for me - how pop music could speak for us.  I can see it:  It may sound like hokum if you don't know the songs.

Recalling "All about the bass" always hitting us and making us laugh in 2016 if we happened to be talking abut Trump.

I was so taken with how Karen Olivo's rendition of "Firework" felt like Satine was trying to talk herself into feeling it right then, but I'd agree someone who doesn't know the insanely popular song might think she was singing he feelings that moment, which I can get would seem like ludicrous dramaturgy.

When I did my "Firework" parody, I admit to being surprised that there were so many people who had only a vague idea of who Katy Perry is.  I thought everyone who knew Adele or Lady Gaga knew Katy Perry.

Absolutely not.  Even my own spouse knew her more as Russell Brand's ex-wife and only seen her perform at Obama events on TV.  "Firework" - he hadn't even heard the song before.

Theater people who love Lady Gaga in all her incarnations know the Tony Bennett duets and the actress, and knew only her outrageous costumes during her exciting (to many of us) "Bad Romance" or 'Edge of Glory" period.  What the heck are people who don't know the strange words of "Bad Romance" going into the theater making of the way the song is done?

That's so sweet, Larry!

I was supposed to work concessions again tomorrow for another event, but I got a call from the volunteer coordinator that she accidentally made a mistake about the number of shifts.

I signed up for the middle of three shifts, but it turns out that the first two times are actually rehearsal times, so only the last shift will happen and I won't have to work concessions again...fine with me! ;D

That would require two rehearsals.
