BK, I too love Troilus and Cressida, both Walton's opera and Shakespeare's play, and I agree completel;y about the murky sound of all Chandos recordings. They hire great singers, conductors, and make them inaudible.

I am pleased to announce the publication of MARY PICKFORD, the newest one-person play IN THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS collection.

Mary Pickford was the very first movie star.  Also, along with Charlie Chaplin, husband Douglas Fairbanks and  D.W. Griffith, she formed United Artists Pictures.

She, also, starred in the film version of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW.

Back in the 1970s, when I was writing my monthly column for CORONET magazine, I was one of the last 2 people to interview Mary Pickford.

My play, MARY PICKFORD, is available in both paperback and Kindle editions, via Amazon and other outlets.

Performance rights are available.

BK, you might like Walton's one-act chamber opera The Bear, written for Benjamin Britten's English Opera Group. Angel/EMI released a recording of the original cast with James Lockhart conducting, and released it on CD with Walton's "Facade" orchestral suite (I prefer the original with speakers) and his Bach adaptation for the ballet "The Wise Virgins." It's a funny one-act based on Chekhov's comedy.

Chandos later redid the opera for their Walton series. I prefer the original.

Shakespeare' plays:
Tragedies

King Lear: my absolute favorite, maybe not as cynical or nihilistic as Troilus and Cressida, another play I love.
Macbeth: witches and desperate ambition! What's not to like?
Measure for Measure: I refuse to call this difficult play a comedy

Comedies
Twelfth Night: close to perfection
Comedy of Errors
The Merry Wives of Windsor: I prefer Verdi's opera Falstaff, which condenses the sprawl to perfection.

Well, bk always says "check your facts," and he's right.

The information I had gotten about that news item earlier today was from someone who knew the victim, so I had assumed it was accurate information. But it turns out to have been incorrect. Rather than a hate crime, it was the act of someone who should have been in a psychiatric hospital, rather than behind the wheel of a car. Still a tragic story, but not what I first thought it was. So apologies to all.

Back from a nice dinner at the Coral Cafe (bacon and cheese omelet and cottage cheese) and then a proper tech rehearsal. Got the sound right, the lighting right, and other than the actress who's been struggling with her lines because she simply doesn't spend the time she needs to drilling them totally messing up about twenty percent of her dialogue, it went well. All the comic stuff I've added really helps, too. So, I had my nice but stern talk about drilling lines tomorrow all day for the actress, no matter what, and then they'll do a speed-through at the theater an hour before curtain. I'm not sure I'll work with anyone ever again who cannot do the job of learning their lines in a timely fashion. It's too hard on the other actors. As I've explained, the forgetter is the driver of the play - the other character is in the passenger seat and a reactor. All that said, when she was on it she got all her laughs.

Now listening to more Walton after Troilus and Cressida finished - and boy did I love that and boy do I love Walton. If you don't know his work you're really missing out on one of the finest English composers ever. His scores for the Olivier Shakespeare films are all brilliant, his two symphonies are fantastic, his violin and viola and cello concertos are amazing - I mean, he's the berries.

Cooling down the home environment, which was 81-degrees when I got home. It's down to seventy-six or so, so that's good.

And now, I'm leaving and going to pick up my friend Margo and we're going to the local Jersey Mike's!  Our friend David sent me two gift cards for a free regular sub each.  They expire tomorrow, and David didn't want to use them by then (he'd already used a couple of others), so he sent them to me for me and Margo to use. :)

Be back later.

Well, the Jersey Mike's sub sandwiches were pretty good...for the most part.  I'd had them before, but Margo hadn't.

However, they got my order wrong!  I asked for the Club Sub (https://www.jerseymikes.com/menu/cold-subs/8-club-sub) (turkey, ham and bacon) on Rosemary Parmesan bread, but they didn't put it on the Rosemary Parmesan bread.  Since the sandwich was free, I didn't really care.

But it wasn't until I had eaten the whole thing that I realized that they didn't put any bacon on the darned thing! :o How could I miss that??

Anyway, I didn't say anything about that either, but now that I'm thinking about it, I probably could've gotten a whole new sandwich for free (or better, another coupon for a future sandwich).

I just remembered that TODAY is the 23rd anniversary of the day that I bought my car!

My previous car was a Subaru Justy and I had it for about four years.

I didn't really take care of it, so it died a slow, expensive death.

At one point, I had a new engine put in, thinking that that would be cheaper (less expensive) than a whole new, or even used car.

But I just had another engine put in, not even a rebuilt engine.

I bought it used with only 14,000 or so miles on it, and it ran well, until it didn't.

My sister and I went looking for cars, and when I test drove my Escort, it only had 20 miles on it.

I didn't know about it, but she remembered that Costco had a car buying program, and told the dealer that I had a Costco card, which I did!

AND at the same time, Ford was having a very low interest deal, so I really didn't pay very much for the financing.

My memory is that the car was $14,000 or so, but that the interest that I actually paid was only $400, but that doesn't add up, so I really don't know what interest I paid, other than not very much.

I really haven't done much with it recently, but my mortgage is going to be paid off probably by the end of this year, so I figure that it's better that I actually get a new (or fairly new) car rather than put any more money into it.

It has served me quite well and it actually runs fairly well, so I'm not too worried about it dying all of a sudden.

It's been a few years for me.  The last time was when my sister, niece and I visited our cousin and his wife in Oregon.
