Well, you've read the notes, the notes were on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, and now it is time for you to post until the Atlantic City cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: METAPHOR!
-
Topic of the Day: the following are all expected to arrive today: the Blu-ray to the recent filmed London production of 42nd Street (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08WP3LMPH) that was shown on PBS a couple of years ago (I recorded it, but it's nice to have an officially released Blu-ray!); the brand new London cast recording to Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical version of Cinderella (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08M83X8JK); and the DVD to A New Leaf (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089TQ7AG) with Walter Matthau and Elaine May (this is actually for my sister, so it doesn't really count for the topic of the day, but it is supposed to arrive today). :)
-
And now, to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I had a nice night of sleep. My faithful little Thatch stayed with me, and when Stella showed up, she behaved.
-
After all the flurry of activity yesterday, I'm doing very little. After DR CharlesSmith left, Michael told me he did not want to continue working with me after next week. He sensibly wants to work on his career, and I don't blame him in the least, by getting onto coaching singers and networking. I understand, and I will miss his bi-weekly visits.
-
I have always wanted to see Atlantic City. When I worked at Drama Book Shop, I worked with the owner amd his wife. She constantly referred to it as a great film. I know John Guare, but I haven't seen him in years. I hope he's well.
-
BK, do you know Vaughn Williams' operas Sir John in Love or Hugh the Drover? The EMI recordings recorded both over 40 years ago, and I prefer them to the later ones from Hyperion and Chandos. I agree with you on Chandos' sound, but the casts are good.
I have never heard, nor had any urge, to hear his opera Pilgrim's Progress.
-
And Hugh the Drover, which I believe Vaughn Williams considered an operetta.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Atlantic City is a great film, one I would like to own. Amazon doesn’t have it new. Maybe Criterion will pick it up one of these days.
-
Kitty cleanup is over, the bed is made, and once I come back from basement and mailboxes, I will tackle another portion of the bathroom cleanup. After, I plan on doing nothing!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Vaughan Williams writes so gracefully for the voice. I've always felt so comfortable singing his music.
-
Good morning, all.
-
We have rain this morning with no thunderstorm or lightning show. I’d almost forgotten that was possible.
-
The plants in back are happy. They’re going to be miserable when I am gone.
-
It's time for Photographic Evidence. Here's a definite money shot:
-
STELLAAAAA -- who wasn't really in the mood to be held at that moment, but we got her:
-
Thatcher will not be held, at least with people there, but he was posing very nicely yesterday.
-
Here's some old man (it says so right there on the shirt!) with his and DR Laura's close personal friend Michael Gildin.
-
And finally, with Yrs Truly...
-
I think all of those can be clicked on to enlarge them.
I shall now zip up the whole collection from yesterday to send to DR Elmore.
-
Thanks to BK for getting that posting issue resolved!
-
It was a wonderful visit, as I said, but it didn't even feel at all like it had been a year and ten months since I'd been there.
Sorry to hear it's time for Michael to bow out, but he sure has been a help. He's a good guy.
-
The Atlantic City Blu-ray can be gotten if Deep Discount still has it. It's been a very strange release. I think it was Robert Harris who posted of it on HTF a few months back. If I'm remembering right, if you ordered it (back then) from Amazon, you got a BD-R copy... but if you ordered it from Deep Discount, you got a regular pressed copy. Beyond that, the two were identical. So I ordered from DD and -- long story short -- their service was a nightmare and there was quite the delay before I actually got it. I did, finally, and I will watch it forthwith. And perhaps posthaste, for good measure.
-
LOVING those photos. Thanks, DR ChasSmith. The kitties are all so beautiful! And the people, too, of course.
-
Hyphens save lives, folks.

TOD
Thanks to the recent posts, Atlantic City and Georgy Girl are next up.
And for listening, the CD that I was just telling DR Elmore I didn't have before, but now I do:
Liz Callaway - On & Off Broadway
-
I love everything Liz. I think her recording of The Story Goes On on this album surpasses her performance on the OBC.
-
Oh, looky-loo! PAGE TWO!!
-
I've only been to Atlantic City once, a couple of years after the movie was made. It was just a quick drive around the area, with only a couple of stops: I walked into one of the then-new casinos just to have a look around and see what it felt like since I'd only ever been in Vegas ones. And before driving back out of town, I stopped and ate in one of the "castle" type of jernts -- one of the White Castle imitations -- oh, that's what it was -- White Tower. I think.
It was just a day trip while I was on a longer visit in the Philadelphia area. I was still living in Redondo Beach, and I have no memory of where I first saw the movie. But I distinctly remember a few years later dropping in to see it at the theater in the Pan Pacific building which was playing second-runs in its last era before the fire.
I've always meant to go back to Atlantic City and take in other interesting old parts (those that remain) of the Jersey Shore, but I never seem to get around to it. It's actually been a goal since childhood to go into the convention center building, whatever they call it now, to see and hear that world famous pipe organ. They've been restoring and taking good care of that, and I really must do it.
-
DR ChasSmith, Annabelle is very happy with the photos, and we've had to look at them several times while she chose her Instagram shots. Thatch is still in shock you caught him licking his butt, so I've promised him I will never post it, but the next time he was bad, I would.
-

I love this photo. Everyone can see my new vehicle.

It's a scientific fact that some cats, as soon as they see you aiming a camera in their general direction, immediately begin licking their butts.
-
And finally, with Yrs Truly...
It was indeed a great visit, and it was such fun to have luinch with DR ChasSmith and Michael. The walk back is an uphill onem and I thought we would never reach the apartment and live. That block walk took so long yjay DR ChasSmith had walked to the garage, picked up his car, and reached my apartment the same time Michael and I walked there.

I'm halfway through the podcast, and it's excellent. The woman who does the interviewing is perfect at being prepared with the questions and then letting the interviewee tell the story. So, what you get -- at least so far -- I mean, who knows, maybe the second half will go to HELL :) -- is a very listenable summary of personal and professional history and all manner of things right from the mouth of BK. And this dismal-weather day at home is an ideal background for listening to a lengthy podcast. Just perfect.
-
From DR TCB
I worry about her, if something should happen to her husband.
VIBES YOUR SISTER STAYS STRONG!

I loved all of the photos. Thanks DR Chas.

That is a very exciting project that I've been following closely.
The last tour I took was about 10 years ago, when the project was just getting off the ground. The organ is VERY LOUD, and at that time was very OUT OF TUNE. :)
But it's magnificent.

Love it!

I loved all of the photos. Thanks DR Chas.
And more thanks.

Yesterday DR JohnG asked if my dining out experience was a good one.
It was quite good. Although I was not expecting the place to be so full. The restaurants have only been open here indoors for like a month (since October). So I was expecting that it would be 50 or 70% capacity. They did have plastic between each booth. And the waiters were wearing masks. But the distance across the aisle to the next table was closer than I would have preferred. But the person's back was to me. And I was able to sit in the middle of my booth.
-
It sounds like a good experience. I found it takes a bit of getting used to. I like the dividers between the booths for privacy as well as avoiding covid.
-
Good Morning - Fighting with Apple Music. That's all I'm saying about THAT.

With the Delta variant on the rise I am trying to be better about wearing my mask. The gym is still too hot.
-
DR George we got you a little keychain at Glacier National Park. I found it in my travel bag when we went to the coast last weekend. It will have to wait now until we return from our upcoming road trip.

Loved all the Larry/Cats/ChasSmith/Michael pictures! :D

Thanks so much, Jane!! :-*

Shown: just a small portion of DR George's collection. 8)
-
That's pretty cool, Singdaw! Whose are those?
-
Are you kidding? Just like most of my postings, I just swiped it off the Internet. I have no idea! :D
-
Dopey me! I should've figured that out...but it is just a piddly amount compared to mine.
-
Mine, however, are not nicely displayed. They're mostly in bags and boxes, and I have a few here at work, although my department is moving to the other side of the building, so who knows what personal stuff I'll be able to keep here. :-\
-
Oh, I hope you can keep you collection at work.
-
DR George do you have space at home to put up a board or two of some of your collection?
-
Kinda like my Fiesta medals. I don’t know what to do with them. I thought of hanging them on a wreath, but what would I do with the wreath? I really don’t have spare wall space.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep.
-
Wonderful photos. And speaking of photos, the Darling Daughter sent me some.
-
Atlantic City opened here on April 10, 1981, just three weeks before we began shooting The Creature Wasn't Nice. I think we were all in pre-production at that point and we all went to Westwood to the Regent to see its opening show, just as we did for Body Heat, when that opened. Interestingly, Robert Goulet, who has a brief appearance in Atlantic City, would come visit his friend Leslie Nielsen during our shoot.
-
Why no one took photos is another story.
-
Went on a longer bike ride than usual as I wanted to listen to the newly released cast album of the new Andrew Lloyd Webber show "Cinderella" - and listen I did - to the entire thing.
While I don't judge a show entirely by its cast album - as I really feel to make an opinion you need to see it in its entirety on stage (or even a video). I will say it needs another listen after I've read the synopsis. But the initial reaction has been good so far.

I do...I just haven't done it. Someday!

That's encouraging. My copy has arrived(!) and I'll listen to it after I've finished BK's interview. :)

It does. And I think that it will take me longer as I have been overly cautious.

Are there places inside that you no longer have to wear your mask? Interestingly the government announced yesterday that starting September 1st if things were to get worse they only double vaccinated people will be able to do certain things. They mentioned restaurants, bars and gyms as they are trying to get 18-29 year olds to get vaccinated.

John lives in Texas ;) I think more people are still wearing them in Washington, at least by me.

Technically that is what the rule is here, vaccinated people mask free while unvaccinated need to wear a mask. The problem is businesses can't or won't ask.
These days the majority of people are not wearing masks here though I think the numbers have gone up in the past week. If we walk into a restaurant and it is busy then I want my mask on until we sit down, not busy I don't bother. The staff are mostly masked.
-
All business workers here are masked. And at the places I frequent, many are still masked, me not being one of them. I don't care if a restaurant is busy or not - walking to the table masked isn't going to get me infected by anything, let alone Covid. But people need to do what makes them comfortable and I'm fine with whatever that might be, as long as no one looks askance in my direction.
-
Picked up a package - the re-ordered correct size sneakers, which I'm happy to say fit perfectly.
-
Then I did some banking (one teller - thankfully only two ahead of me), picked up my dry cleaning - the laundered stuff hadn't come back yet, so I'll get that batch in the morning. I hadn't been to the dry cleaners in a year and four months. Thankfully, I have a LOT of clothes and if I was at home, I just wore t-shirts, which she of the Evil Eye washes.

It is the crowd at the door while waiting to be seated that I try to avoid. No crowd, no concerns.
-
Had my first McDonald's in over a year - just wanted quick and easy and it was fine and within my 1200 calories, although I can't eat anything else.
-
Well concerns, but I stay relaxed about it.
-
Jane, I haven't had the experience of a crowd at a door because I tend to go at off times.

Yes, you go late. We tend to go between 4:00 & 5:00, closer to happy hour. It varies how busy it is.

Hello, everyone.
-
Wow! What great photos! Congrats to all concerned, including the kitties.
-
Lots of people here on the Westside of LA still wear masks, including me. I've gotten used to servers wearing masks and I wish they would continue. I've don't care to be served food by someone whose hair is unkept. Some servers, though, are no longer wearing them.

I have noticed a few servers not wearing them. Beginning Sunday we will be eating out every night so we shall see. Even in Idaho & Wyoming servers were still wearing masks & restaurants were requiring them until you were seated. That may have changed by now. I have noticed more & more employees in the market not wearing masks, though the majority are.

Finished with my viewing.

Finished Barber's Vanessa and am now listening to his Antony and Cleopatra - I know it was lambasted at its premiere, but it's really good. And Vanessa is superb, especially in its classic RCA recording with Eleanor Steber, conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos.

So I was expecting that it would be 50 or 70% capacity. They did have plastic between each booth. And the waiters were wearing masks. But the distance across the aisle to the next table was closer than I would have preferred. But the person's back was to me. And I was able to sit in the middle of my booth.
Thanks. Masks are almost nowhere to be seen here nowadays.
That is shocking to me.
John lives in Texas ;) I think more people are still wearing them in Washington, at least by me.
I see fewer and fewer people wearing masks.

With the Delta variant on the rise I am trying to be better about wearing my mask. The gym is still too hot.
What good would it do to ask? If people don’t care enough to get vaccinated, they certainly will have no problem lying about it.

And what about restaurants that post signs that require you to wear a mask, except when you are eating?

Haven't run into that situation. No restaurants here are requiring anyone who's vaccinated to mask at any time.
