Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little miracle and a Big Boy Combo, and now it is time for you to post until the Big Boy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VIRTUOSO!
-
George, I think the show is called FALLING.
-
George, I think the show is called FALLING.
I don't remember being asked. I certainly could do it.
-
I'm on my tablet right now, so searching my e-mails is never successful. I'll have to check when I get on my desktop computer.
-
I am sorry. Maybe I got my wires crossed.
-
Oh, no...Bird flu outbreak continues in Washington state after Thurston County flock tests positive (https://komonews.com/amp/news/local/bird-flu-outbreak-continues-in-washington-state-after-thurston-county-flock-tests-positive)! My niece has been following these stories because of her chickens. :-\

I am sorry. Maybe I got my wires crossed.
Not a problem. Tell Sharry that if they need a sound board operator that they can call me...no obligation, of course. ;)
-
Good morning, all!
-
I set the alarm for 5:15. I wanted to have enough time to accomplish my morning chores before Access-a-Ride shows up, I slept very poorly. Every time I have an early appointment-procedure-travel-whatever, my mind goes into a panic mode and I can barely sleep. Wewll, I'll sleep tonight.
-
Once I return from my outing, I suspect I'll spend the remainder of the day in a fog.
-
I'm hoping that our DR vixmom shows up this morning with good news about vixdad.

I don't mind hearing opera in English if the translation's good and the producer keeps the singers' diction as clear as possible, but that isn't always the case. Sir Rudolf Bing, when he became general manager of the Met around 195o, believed that productions of unfamiliar operas - Cosi Fan Tutte, Martha, Arabella, and Boris Godunov were relatively unfamiliar to New York audiences then - should be performed in English. He also promoted light opera at the Met with successful productions of La Perichole and Die Fledermaus and a flop Gypsy Baron. Columbia Records, which had the Met under contract, recorded the Cosi Fan Tutte, Fledermaus, and Boris Godunov. They had in 1947(?) recorded the Met's English production of Hansel and Gretel.
To Bing's credit, he promoted good translations. I've had the Fledermaus and Cosi Fan Tutterecordings for years, and I like them a lot. RCA recorded on one LP a heavily edited La Perichole with the original 1957 cast, and it makes you wiosh for the entire show.

For those who've read the Kritzer books, if you've ever wanted to see where my what is it, fish grandparents lived and how it was, in fact, literally across the way from the entrance to Pacific Ocean Park, watch the opening minute of this Route 66. As they turn right, you'll see the St. Regis Apartments sign on your right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw4eRgmDs0Y

In England, Chandos Records has a series "Opera in English"; some recordingas are complete, some only selectiosn, but I like many of them, I listen to their Carmen quite a bit. I started buyting them when I was recording in Dublin since I needed to know more Scottish, Irish, and British singers if we continued to record. My big problem with these recordings is that I am not crazy about the sound. The Chandos label has also picked up earlier recordings, like EMI's early 1970s Abduction from the Seraglio and Handel's Julius Caesar.
EMI records in the 1960s recorded a lot of the Sadler's Wells Opera productions in one-LP selections, including The Bartered Bride, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, Carmen, Il Trovatore, and excerpts from their operettas Die Fledermaus, The Gipsy Baron, Merry Widow, The Land of Smiles, three siuccessful Offenbach productions and Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe. They also produced complete recordings of Sadler's Wells' Hansel and Gretel, which uses the same arch translation by Constrane Bache as the 1947 Met recording, and The Mikado.
Some of the opera translations are dreadful, but the Fledermaus, Gipsy Baron, Merry EWidow, and Offenbach translations are delightful.

Good morning, friends.

Happy to hear about bk's little miracle. May they continue.

Wishing the vixfamily a big miracle.

Thanks as always for the opera insights, DR elmore3003.

They are running another procedure today on his small intestines to see if they can locate the source of the bloodand repair the damage.
They've now ruled out upper GI, stomach and large intestines.
The new test will involve radioactive material so he's harboring some hopes of being able to shoot webs or turn invisible or fly when this is all over.
He had his 9th blood transfusion last night, and hasn’t eaten since Thursday except for one cup of jello and a small cup of lemon ice on Monday, so we've decided he officially qualifies as a vampire at this point.
His color was better yesterday and he didn't doze off at all during the visit so I consider that a step forward
This was Day 6 fir him in the ICU...I know all the nurses by name now , and thanking God for them
-
I showed him the picture of lead kitty with chickens and he chuckled, the closest thing to a laugh I’ve seen all week, and this is a man who laughs constantly.
-
He also called me this morning to say hi, and we spoke for a couple of minutes.
-
The fact that he had the strength to do that I find encouraging
-
Well off to work I must go

Oh, DR vixmom, I hope today and each day after are better than the day before for vixdad. I send you bushels and pecks of hugs and prayers.

Thanks for the update, Vixmom. Sending more prayers, hugs and vibes.

Continued vibes for MR BK......nice to see that episode of ROUTE 66 and see the hotel!

Appointed vibes for DR ELMORE & DR RON PULLIAM today.

DR GEORGE said something very confusing last night - perhaps someone can explain it.....he said:
"It was too much to eat at one sitting."
I have never heard that expression before and I can't understand what it means - it's certainly something I have never encountered during my lifetime.
-
What a great opening in that Route 66 episode!
The apartment building is pretty much how I pictured it, but with the addition of the signage. What a wonderful find.
-
DR Jrand71, I suspicion DR George was posting in a foreign tongue, and the HHW auto-translator wasn't up to the task. Because you are correct, the phrase makes no sense. I think "eat" has something to do with food, but after that I'm lost.

I have caught up on DR Vixmom's encouraging news this morning.

I need to look at this later today as I need to leave soon for an appointment in Portland.
-
It is a once a year appointment I usually make earlier in the morning to beat rush hour traffic. They made it an hour later, which means I need to allow more time to get there.
-
On my way now but I did have time to watching the opening of the clip and see the building :)

Back from physical therapy.
Did exercises and have exercises to do daily the next two weeks before re-evaluation.
I also had X-rays done. THE MOST PAINFUL part of my day, thus far. Cold metal table, no back support and various positions that hurt more than anything I could have anticipated. Still, they got a vast array of shots/positions, so whenever the X-rays are reviewed, they will undoubtedly show something that may help my recovery.
-
And now I am in a mental limbo. Will likely take a long nap. Worn out, I am.
-

Well, it's been a day.
-
Access-a-Ride was about 15 minutes late to pick me up, and traffic down to 14th Street wasreally heavy. The driver was one of my favoreites and heremembered me, so we had a nice chat to the NYC Human Rights Administration.
-
Since I had no idea how long it would take me at the HRA, I asked for a return trip at 10:30, but because of traffic, I didn't get to 14th Street until 10:00. While I was waiting to be seen. I got a call that my return trip would arrive in 15 minutes/ I told the caller that I was still waiting rto be seen, and that I might be still in the meetign when the driver arrived. The caller advised me to call Access-a-Ride when my appointmewnt was over.
-
I saw a nice lady who scanned my documents and thanked me for coming in. She was really wonderful. I went back to hte first floor and called Access-a-Ride. It was exactly 10:30. The Access-a-Ride ladt told me she would check on my trip. After a long wait, she told me the driver was a block away and should arrive in about a minute, So, I went outsidse to wait. It was chilly and the rain had finally stopped. After waiting around 15 minutes, I called Access-a-Ride. This began a serieas of inquiries that continued until 11:20 or so. Around 11:00 the deriver called. He had a Spanish accent so heavy I could barely understand, but Ig gather he was parked somewhere around the corner of Fifth Aveniue and 14th Street. I called AAR back ad asked why the driver wasn't at my location. At 11:33, I got a text from the MTA, who sponsors AAR, telling me my ride was canceled. I walked to Fifth Acvenue, waitind agews for a taxi. I got home at 12:30, and the ride cost me $35.00.
Color me really pissed off.

Nap is over, and I feel much more refreshed.

I'm up, I'm up - maybe five hours of sleep.

Performance vibes for DR GEORGE & Co as they return to the stage.
-
I am attending rehearsal tonight and also taking some OLIVER photos, but I may have already said that....however now it is another post for anyone who might have missed it the first time.
-
I am glad MR BK kept his scripts.....most interesting reading, I am sure.
Although he probably remembers all of his lines.
-
Too much to eat at one sitting......I will let HHW know if it ever happens to me.
It hasn't happened in over 71 years - but there is a first time for everything.

Please, sir, JRand would like some more.

For some of Australia’s most hardcore film buffs, streaming will never match the tactile, finite and nostalgic lure of the hard copy.
-
I can understand that.
-
Not that I actually care. Streaming is fine with me. I think we own two or three DVD's.
-
Not that I actually care. Streaming is fine with me. I think we own two or three DVD's.
The main problem with streaming is that any particular program may not be available all the time. If I buy something in a physical format, I own it until it is physically damaged or degrades, but the rights to play it can otherwise never be taken away by another company.

True. How about the quality of what you are watching, DVD vs streaming?
-
TOD
I cannot match DR Elmore's knowledge and comprehensive lists of good English translations, but I was taught that composers -- in general -- wanted their works to be understood and appreciated, and were surprisingly open to their operas being sung in a region's own language.
But quality and purpose of translation really matters, and I was also taught that those Met ones such as Così, Fledermaus, and Hansel and Gretel were among the very best singing translations. They are still favorites of mine. When just studying an opera, you want a literal translation (the Verdi and Puccini ones by William Weaver were the bible for us in school). But when performing one, it needs to meet different criteria while hopefully being as true to the original as possible.
This really makes me want to take out those recordings.

Well, streaming can be hi-def and DVDs aren't, but I'm less concerned about that versus a title not being available to stream at all.
