Well, you've read the notes, the notes were soporific, and now it is time for you to post until the soporific cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SENSIBILITY!
-
TOD: I can't imagine that I hadn't had some Mexican dishes growing up, like some tacos or a Mexican-style pizza here and there -
But the first Mexican restaurant I vividly recall visiting (and going back to many times) was Chi-Chi's when I was at law school in the very early 1980s.
Chi-Chi's restaurants disappeared in the early 2000's, but there was this article in the Times last year saying it's been poised for a comeback.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/07/business/chi-chis-restaurant-mexican.html
"Chi-Chi’s, the Former Mexican Restaurant Chain, Plans a Comeback
The chain, which closed in 2004, is poised for a revival next year after the son of one of the founders reached a deal with Hormel Foods."
-
Good morning, all!
-
I took several pain meds before I went to bed and I slept quite well. I'm moving very cautiously this morning, and I'm worried about my balance.
-
Annabelle is being passive-aggressive this morning, and she's working my last nerve.
-
Around 1946, my dad's brother moved his family from Ohio to Tucson. His daughter had terrible asthma issues, and her doctors advised a warmer, dryer climate. I don;t know how my aunt and uncle settled on Tucson, but for the next twelve years or so, my only nformation on one of my dad's brothers came from annual Christmas day long distance phone calls.
-
In December 1958, my family drove to Tucson for Christmas. We left on Monday Dec. 14, and my memory is that the trip took four days - I think it took us two days just to cross Texas - and we left Tucson on Dec. 26.
-
Now to the TOD: my uncle was construction worker, and one of his investments was a Mexican restaurant, where I had my first taste of Mexican food. Several days after we landed in Tucson, my family and my aunt drove south to Nogales where we had more Mexican food for lunch. I don't think I had any Mexican food after 1958 until I moved to New York in 1979.
-
Does anyone know anythimg about Zelle? Can it be used on a computer? I'm trying to learn more about it, but it looksa as if you can only use it on a phone!
-
Saturday morning greetings! I’m up early to get ready to go to a luncheon in the south Dayton ‘burbs.
-
…I don't think I had any Mexican food after 1958 until I moved to New York in 1979.
DR Elmore, remember I used to make nachos at cast parties? Do those count?
-
TOD - I first heard about Mexican food in the early ‘60s when my sister began dating the man who would become her husband. He’d recently finished up his military service in Texas and had developed a fondness there for the cuisine. My first recollection of eating Mexican food is when my high school Spanish club went to El Nibble Nook in suburban Detroit. I think they’re still in business.

Here's a pretty good full-stage video of "One Night in Bangkok" from the new CHESS that just got posted.
For those who might insist that Aaron Tveit is a regular guy who puts his pants on "one leg at a time" like the rest of us :) - such a fun choreographic moment at 2:07 into the YouTube

Good morning, friends.

And others.

I wanna see Pity the Child.
-
Alas, I know nothing about Zelle. Except that my bank keeps trying to get me to use it.
-
Chi-Chi's just opened a new restaurant around these parts. The reviews I've seen have been quite good.

I thought it really kicked into high gear around 2-1/2 minutes in.

Again, in the world of dream casting, the world of "is this delusional, or just need the cash to help that happen" -
If Jack Viertel allowed it, Aaron Tveit would surely be a terrific Simon Morley in Skip and Jack's musical of Jack Finney's "Time and Again" - even in a concert presentation

MichaelG could tell us how it played in person.
But I don't think I've ever seen that choreographic move of the chorus dressing the actor and dropping a performer into their pants before. It sounds like that moment even got them some appreciative applause.
I do recall some quick unusual costume changing within a song in the song that goes "I don't wanna show off" in Drowsy Chaperone, though.

In the world of dream posting, we'd get to page 2 before 10 a.m. (Eastern)
-
We've got to follow that dream, as Elvis might say
-
We've got to dream the impossible dream, as Richard Kiley might say
-
Or ride on the wheels of a dream, as they sing in Ragtime
-
Is page 2 anywhere near? The dream of page 2 before 10 a.m. (Eastern) may be in reach!

PAGE TWO!

I guess my first Mexican was out of a can. Dad loved tamales and always got a can at Christmas. Then I went to Chi-Chi’s in high school. Now I live in a city with more than 800 taquerias.
-
John G, I don't know if you saw this the other day.
I thought the staging was quite interesting as to what a full Broadway staging of a number can be in 2025.
I'd imagine Lea Michele's fan base is feeling very satisfied that they're getting their $300-and-up worth. Yet I wonder how this would play with a non-star.

It’s a tradition here to have tamales on Christmas Eve. Sometimes I follow that. I buy them. I made them once, but it takes more than one person to make them. An army of helpers would be nice.
-
DR Jane - have you ever heard of a bernedoodle?

I did see it. The song was written for Judy Kuhn, who still owns it, IMO, but she’s good. Michele is making it her own.
As for the staging, well, the song is all about Florence. Perhaps there’s too much staging? Or not the right kind? You could have the chorus hem her in.

How do you feel Elaine Paige figures into it? (There's a point where she starts making with flapping her arms that seems to get some snarky comments in the YouTube comments.)
I guess this might have been the "MTV-style version."
Elaine Paige - "Nobody's Side" - pop video version from the 1980s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtAMrPJg75o
-
The arm-flapping by Elaine Paige starts on "Everybody's playing the game / But nobody's rules are the same."

DR Elmore, remember I used to make nachos at cast parties? Do those count?
I forgot! And Andrea had taco parties, too, between 1975and 1979.
-
I'm not sure whether that was from the time when Elaine Paige and Tim Rice were a couple.
I found it interesting that Tim Rice tried to (or maybe even did) write a lyric for a moment (maybe "Memory") in CATS - which of course we now know wasn't used.
This is from the Wikipedia page for CATS:
However, "Memory", an 11 o'clock number for Grizabella that Nunn insisted the show needed as its "emotional centre",still had no lyrics at this point. Lloyd Webber's former writing partner Tim Rice was brought in to write a lyric for the song, but his version was rejected by Nunn for being too depressing. The lyrics for "Memory" were not completed by Nunn until well into the previews.

Good morning, all.

I just leaf-blew the thin layer of dry snow we got overnight before anyone could drive on it and flatten it into a layer of ice.
Mission accomplished in time, thank goodness.

TOD
I have no idea when or where I first had Mexican food. I suspicion it wasn't until I moved to L.A. at age 22, MAYBE the year before when I first visited California for a week, but I don't remember it at any time or place in my life before that. Which seems odd. But back then, maybe not.
Worse, I have no idea where in L.A. I did have my first, or what exactly I had. It was most likely fast food, I do recall my first quesadilla at an El Taco. Of course that wouldn't have been much of a quesadilla, but I thought it was delicious. Living right behind Hollywood Blvd., I must have sampled things from here and there, I just wish I had some actual memories of what those first things would have been. I do know that one of my earliest sit-down chains was Red Onion, which I loved, and El Torito was another. But I've loved Mexican food from those first days on. It's one of those things I really could eat every day.
-
Speaking of guacamole...
Again, one of my favorite things. DR George should pass all of his over here. That way, there won't be any left on the table to embarrass us when they bring the check.
I do remember my first taste of an avocado. I'd been in L.A. for a couple of months when someone took us to a place called Horticulture Holiday on the Sunset Strip, and they had me try the avocado from a large salad plate. HOOKED. From that day forward. I could eat avocados every day, and occasionally do.
-
We had Mexican food from Rosa Mexicano last night. Skip had their chickens tacos and I had the brisket enchiladas (which sounds to me like a mix of Jewish and Mexican).
There's some leftover guacamole in the fudge.
-
There were some extraordinary looking (and tasting) avocado slices on the chicken tacos!
-
I think Zelle is Bank of America only? I have it and it works great and is instant. If someone's paying you over 1K for the first time, then it takes a day or two to clear. It works on computers or online BofA - all you need to do is set it up and give someone the email address to which your account is linked. That's it.
-
I'm up, I'm up - four and a half hours of sleep. It happens. But I'd gotten five hours in the late afternoon and evening. Alarm was set for eight-thirty, but I think I'll leave ten minutes early and put gas in the motor car first.

Congrats to DR ELMORE on his millstone.
-
Nice video links today DR FREDDIE.
-
Would it be untowards to post more fully-clothed videos of that same dance troupe to get us to page 3?
I'm fascinated to know from a YouTube-uploader point of view whether they actually make a living from such stuff in "real life," or maybe it's that they earn $$$ from YouTube views, which they seem to get in droves? I don't see any videos where they perform for a live audience.
-
They're certainly a lot more laughs than the change-of-pace episode 3 of HEATED RIVALRY! :)
-
I shall now be on my way to put gas in the motor car and then to the theater.
-
From DR Rodzinski:
I’ve been watching a little of What’s Up Doc? each night with my kids before bedtime. And the biggest reaction was when the price of something Ryan O’Neal was paying for ended in .67.
;D
-
DR Jane - have you ever heard of a bernedoodle?
Yes, and while they are very cute I would be very hesitant to get one unless it was a rescue. My Berner (short for Bernese Mt. Dog) friends who breed quality Bernese Mt. Dogs truly dislike them, mostly because the breeders use poor Berners for breeding them.

Jane - I saw in my online chart that the "eye photo" test the doctor had me take last Wednesday is specifically defined as being because of diabetes. So I guess it's not a routine test taken for seniors.
I'll hear any results at my next appointment Wednesday afternoon, but am REALLY hoping that if there's a problem needing attention, he'll contact me before then.
-
I can only guess that my first Mexican food was at Olvera Street. Later I loved going there for the best toquitos.
-
I was eight when my family vacationed in Mexico. Food wise that was a big treat, all the Mexican food we wanted as long as it was cooked.
-
Prior to that I remember going to Tijuana and my father permitting us to eat tocos from a food truck and worrying that we would get sick. We didn't.

Very different production.
-
MichaelG could tell us how it played in person.
The choreographic move drew gasps from the audience, including me. If it's getting applause now that's probably because people know it's coming. For us it was a complete surprise.
I'd call it sleazy rather than tacky, but that's kind of the point of the number, contrasting so completely with Merano. As with all the big songs in the show, it got huge applause.

Like Chas, it took me moving to California in my early 20s to try Mexican food and even then it was Taco Bell, but that was a good gateway drug to teach me what the various things were, like, I didn’t even know what a burrito was back then. After Taco Bell, I was open to try any place.
Back in Indiana as a kid, my sisters would make tacos out of some kind of kit, but those seemed exotic to me and I would just eat the meat and cheese.

It's real easy to say hold the guac, or put it on the side. ;) And if something accidentally does have it, I can either remove it or eat it. Fortunately, I'm not allergic. I just don't care for it.

Indeed DR FREDDIE I think I posted yesterday what I thought of this weeks HR episode....not much.
-
I am sort of watching KING OF KINGS with Jeffrey Hunter.....or as it was known in Hollywood at the time: I WAS A TEEN AGE JESUS.
-
Back from rehearsal - very good - Cheryl hadn't quite understood the set, so she had to make adjustments and didn't quite finish, so she'll be back next Saturday to do so. But what she did is super cute and really fun. Then we showed her all the numbers and she liked them a lot, then cleaned up the folks who've been sloppy. When I stage, I can show what I want, but teaching is another story - Cheryl teaches and is great at communicating what to do with the body and be very specific and talk in dancer lingo.
-
I hope MR BK's rehearsal is going well.
Did we ever find out that he got an assistant?
-
So, we all had a lot of grand fun.
-
Of all the bible movies, King of Kings was my favorite when I was a young teen.
-
I think my introduction to real Mexican food was at the aforementioned CHI CHI'S at the Greenwood Park Mall....
-
Saw it about five times at the Egyptian during its 70mm roadshow.
-
So, we all had a lot of grand fun.
That's great to hear, BK!
-
I came right home and have ordered my pasta thing from Stanley's - should be here in twenty minutes or so and I'm starving.

Same here, and I saw it several times at its first-run theeder in Fort Lauderdale. Actually, it was probably the only Biblical movie I knew at the time, except for probably The Ten Commandments. Above all, it was my introduction to Miklos Rozsa.
-
Or Miklós Rózsa, to be a little more correct.
-
I've seen the Zelle logo on my bank's website, too, but I've never checked it out.

Good, DR George!
-
Keith got Wordle in three.
Great! Me too!
-
Well, I must be off. The sister, the housemate and I are going to a local annual event:
Have a wonderful time.
I'm hoping to catch our parade as it passes us.
Thanks, Jane! I hope we do, and you, too!

Congrats to Keith!

I won't watch all of it, just hoping to catch some of the boats as they go buy. They pass a number of times in a two week period.

Congrats to Keith!
Thank you.

Hope you have lots of fun!
-
Congratulations, DR elmore3003, on your lofty new perch in the HHW firmament!!!
-
A parade of lighted ships sounds like great fun.
-
Hope there will be some photos.
-
We were in the 20s here today, but tomorrow it goes back down to single digits.
-
We also had a light dusting of snow.
-
Tomorrow attending a lunch on the campus of St. Olaf College, but not going to the final performance of the Christmas Festival.
-
The small liberal arts college is unique in that 30%+ of the student body participate in the music program.
-
We have to rush back from the lunch to attend a 70th birthday party for a friend.
-
Glad your printer is back in business, DR elmore3003.
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.

A photographer got a close-up shot of 47's new "peace prize."
-
Finally resting after a very long and occasionally irritating day.
-
The irritating part was that they closed the interstate that would have taken me to the winery.
-
I left an hour early but there was no access to I-10, so I had to go through slow backroads.
-
Same problem on the way back. And detours on the other side of town kept traffic going slowly after dancing.
-
The ridiculous road work has made getting around town a true drawback to living here.
-
Six!
-
I don’t know when I will get to see Merrily.
-
Good night, all.
-
I'm up, i'm up - oh wait...
-
I managed to watch two motion pictures.
-
And doze for a bit.
-
Lunch was excellent. Perhaps a bit rich these days for the tummy, but really tasty.
-
Having a sweet to take pill three and that will be it.
-
Rehearsal time tomorrow has been moved up to noon - that's good as I have to do the commentary for Kritzerland. Show order is done. Tricky one - couple too many ballads.
-
Isn't Too Many Ballads a Sondheim song?
Too many ballads,
Where's a bouncy C when you need one now?
So many ballads,
Putting us to sleep
-
Why are we on page six?
-
We could be on page seven if we weren't on page six.
-
But we're on page six.
-
Six will not do.
-
Six and the Single Girl
-
A delightful Natalie Wood-Tony Curtis romp directed by Richard Quine.
-
Quine wrote the theme song as well.

Noooooooooo!!!

The ridiculous road work has made getting around town a true drawback to living here.
I hate it when that happens! >:(

-
Still page six???
-
How can that be.
-
That cannot be.
-
And yet it is.
-
And I'm just beginning the notes because I was doing a show order and commentary.
-
Productive, aren't I?
-
A lot more productive than page six.
-
I think there is some serious gaslighting going on here.
-
No way we can still be on this page.
-
I shall speak to the man in charge.
-
See?
-
It always helps to speak to the man in charge.
-
Still page six???
How can that be.
Well, I've just been resizing photos from tonight's Parade of Lighted Ships, and am ready to post some. :)
-
And here's the first one...it's the observation tower down at Olympia's port:
-
We didn't go up there tonight, but I have gone up there during the day in the past.
-
Here's the first of just some of the lighted boats:
-
I don't have a great camera on my phone. ::) Hopefully, the next phone I get has a better one.
-
Another lighted boat:
-
This one actually changed colors!
-
And another boat:
-
Yet another:
-
And another:
-
And the last boat picture:
-
I didn't realize that my phone camera had a night setting, so I took this after the parade was all done:
-
Now, if you're thinking, too bad he didn't know about the night setting for the pictures of the boats. But even if I had known about it, you have to hold the camera still and the boats were moving, so it wouldn't have worked at all. :P
-
After the lighted boats parade, we all went to a local Italian restaurant called Casa Mia.
-
I had the Caesar salad with spicy chicken, and cheesecake for dessert...it was all quite delish!
-
What's really cool is that building used to be an auto shop back in the 1980s (the restaurant kept the big garage doors!) and that auto shop used to be owned by Mona's late husband.
-
My parents met and becane friends with Chuck and Mona when we all lived in Colorado when they were both in the army. After he retired, Chuck and Mona moved up here, and then my parents move us up here and we all stayed friends! Mona is one of the regular Phase 10 players!
-
Gratuitous Post #200!!
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
They were supposed to be brief and yet - they are not.
-
Some like it brief.
-
For instance, a thief.
-
Let's not give me grief.
-
Let's all eat some beef.
-
Or give some relief.
-
From the chief.
-
Perhaps an aperitif?
-
That's enough of THAT.
