BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE was ... okay ... last night. It's nice to see it done, and the production was very stylish, but there was a lack of chemistry between the two leads who both seemed to be phoning it in. It's too bad, because the datedness of the book really showed through as a result.
I never liked the play much, but I love the film version.
I would agree with that now. I'd never seen it on stage, or even read it, so last week I did finally read through it quickly which prepared me for a bit of letdown. I hoped, of course, that they would overcome its weaknesses, and it looked hopeful at first, but it was not to be.
I love the movie, too. I only knew it as a kid on black and white TV, then later in color on the murky DVD. The Twilight Time Blu-ray is beautiful. I'll be watching it soon with a couple of the people who saw the play with me last night. They don't know the movie so I'm interested in their reactions.
