A beautiful day that brought beautiful news!

After a week of the most godawful heat and anxiety about Mego, this morning we got a wonderful update (and a break from the oppressive weather). He is doing astonishingly well. At one point, the vet even used the word “phenomenal.”

Last night, the first attempt to wean him off the vasopressin did not go as planned, so this morning they tried again. As of 11 a.m. he was down to a minimal dose of vasopressin. If all goes well, by tomorrow he will be off it completely and they will start weaning him of norepinephrine, the last vasopressor. His red blood cell levels are holding steady, not quite optimal, but almost there. Very little fluid is draining out of his belly, and what is coming out shows no bacteria. The drains in his belly may be coming out tomorrow, too. His blood pressure was 113 this morning, which is great!

And Mego himself is trying to say he feels better. He is more active and repeatedly tries to get on his feet. He is still weak and wobbly, but with a little support from the techs he manages to stay upright for a bit.

Wait, Dr. DiFazio is calling! And she has even better news for this late evening update!

Mego did so well this afternoon that they weaned him off the vasopressin completely and started weaning him off the norepinephrine. His blood pressure remains stable and is right where it should be.

The drains were removed earlier than planned, because effectively nothing was coming out. Another good sign. His red blood cells remain at a good level, not quite normal, but close. He is less and less wobbly. He got up and went straight for his food tonight. And best of all, and the most tangible sign of his improvement, he made his way to the litterbox for the first time and peed. That was HUGE.

“I’m really thrilled!” Dr. Difazio said, and it sounded like she meant it. Thrilled is an understatement for how we are feeling, though!

We’d like to thank Dr. Jillian Difazio and the entire ICU team at VERG Brooklyn for the care they are giving Mego. And a big thank you, too, to Onika and Dee and all the front desk staff who have taken our many calls with such patience and have always made sure to get pictures to us.

He meowed for his picture tonight. He is such a sweet boy.

The "closet" was a plastic rack to hang clothes on. It wouldn't have been so bad had they provided more than 2 hangers.

Nice walk home down 6th Avenue and we're in for the night. I'm as packed as I can be the night before.

Yes, I'd seen the movie, but Richard had not. His objection was the portrayal of all the men as jerks. No John Cullum...
