Thursday morning greetings!  Our Christmas Day was pretty low key.  Rob and Mary Linda arrived about 1pm and we opened presents until the turkey was almost done.  We were putting the finishing touches on dinner when our sister-in-law Jayne arrived and we ate dinner about 4:30 - turkey, stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots, cranberry sauce, rolls.  The kids stayed until it was time for Rob's pre-work nap (he went in at 11) and Jayne left about 7.  I crashed in my recliner, watched Call the Midwife, and went to bed.

Just indulging for a moment my memories of the Van Nuys Airport area:  my greatest feeling of loss is for Skytrails, the restaurant and bar at Sherman Way and Hayvenhurst. A classic hangout if ever there was one. I couldn’t estimate the number of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners enjoyed there, both alone and in the company of good friends. It was the kind of place that, once gone, is irreplaceable.

I don’t know when it was razed for development, but I’m glad I wasn’t around then. My fellow fliers and I also enjoyed some meetings and meals at Lulu’s, on Roscoe, which to my amazement is still there. I recall that as a typical So. Cal. coffee shop type of jernt. For fast food, Tommy’s on Roscoe or Beeps at Sherman Way and Woodley. Oddly, I don’t literally remember eating at the latter, but I know I did. Also enjoyed a few meals at the 94th Aero Squadron bordering the airport. These three also survive, to my amazement, though the Tommy’s is apparently no longer just the “stand” I recall. I also liked the Denny’s on the south side of Ventura, just east of the 405, an occasional stop on my drive over the hill. Long gone.

In the realm of bookstores lost, there were a few dedicated to aviation. One was Pan American Aviation, somewhere around Saticoy on the west side of the airport. I still have books and material from there that might show the address.

For pure landmark value — from the air as well as the ground — the Van Nuys Drive-In, with a great marquee and screen decor (Roscoe, east of Sepulveda) and the Busch Gardens and brewery that were a checkpoint on final approach to runway 16L.

Well, that cleared the room.

Probably because I neglected to mention the newsstand on Van Nuys.  :)

We’re getting videoed (is that a word yet?)* tomorrow night. I don’t know who’s doing it, so the quality will be somewhere between decent and execrable. Nor do I know if I’ll get a physical copy of it. If I do, I might be able to post a tiny snippet.

*What DO people call it nowadays? I think many still say “taping” and a smaller few say “filming”...

Well, that cleared the room.

In other news, I just ate some Sloppy Joe leftovers. We don’t do a formal dinner on Christmas Day, just hot snacks and such. This was one of them. And so delicious.

I see we’re sold out on Saturday. And there are only seven remaining for Friday, so that’ll be a sellout, too. There are forty (out of 112) remaining for tonight, which is already good for a Thursday and the day after Christmas. That will no doubt improve, too, perhaps even greatly improve. So we done well.

That second one is a good friend who went along on a couple of pleasure flights. Fortunately, he's not flying the plane there.

Not sure who the weird guy is in the first photo.

Now aren't you sorry you said that, DR vixmom?

Thus endeth the Van Nuys reminiscences for today.

Time for me to tend to some cat duty -- notably, shoveling some sh  , as General Patton might have said.

DR Chas last month when we briefly popped into L.A. for a 70th birthday party we were at the 94th Aero Squadron.  It is still very nice.

Thatch has been Daddy's helper today.  He's less rowdy than Annabelle or Stella on my work table, but he likes to play with my pens and paper clips, nap on my score paper, and chase the pencil or ruler sliding over the paper.

DR Elmore, I think that was a day in 1980, or close. So ... 30?

And what in the HELL is that stuff on my head?

I’m glad to hear that. The one at Miami International is also still there. Don’t know how many there were, altogether. Unfortunately, the one at Torrance Airport looks to have been swallowed up by development.

I didn't realize there were more than just the 1.  This was only the 2nd time we have eaten there.  We were there with the friend who had the party & his wife years ago for our anniversary.

It looks like there are four now - the two above, one in San Diego, and one in Columbus. I had no idea they’re still a thing, but I’m glad to hear it.

I’m also told there used to be one at Fort Lauderdale. So, four operating and two gone, to my knowledge. Interesting how most have been in places central to me.

Good morning, all. Happy Boxing Day!

Boxing Day is such a major day in Canada. You would not believe how many people go Boxing Day shopping. It's crazy.

I got 66 measures written this afternoon.  After they had their dinner, all three cats decided to come and help Daddy orchestrate.  I was so happy that Annabelle has snapped out of that cold that I welcomed them. Annabelle did little more than roll around, try to pick up pencils and pens in her paws and try to eat them.

I enjoyed reading the posts of DR CHAS SMITH.....

There is another home where we lived from 1962-1964 that has also been demolished.  The property is now a town park....

I am sad that we did NOT take any photos of those houses....a few photos of the yards, but not of the actual homes....
