And foreign films don't always adapt well.  Look at The King of Hearts or The Baker's Wife.  I wonder if Carnival In Flanders was too early;  I love the film and could see it made into a musical.

This is another quiet day.  At 1:00 I'm on a conference call with animal activist Andrew Weprin and others to urge New York legislature to pass CAPA.

That's great, Larry!  Good luck!

Well, things are getting real here. Or should I say "real"?

Got word late last night that the Willy Wonka musical and all other spring events at this high school (including all concerts and assemblies and I believe some sporting events) are officially CANCELLED.

This is devastating -- for the school, the students, and the extra hired personnel like yrs truly. Everyone involved is in shock at the moment. But it's particularly scary as it could so easily be the start of a statewide domino effect.

That's really too bad.  I got an e-mail from the Washington Center that the two performances of a traveling dog show has been cancelled.  I had also gotten tickets for my friend David for that show (he asked me to buy them for him since he lives in Seattle) and now have to pay him back when I get the refund, which is fine, but a hassle. :-\

Another musical version of Some Like It Hot? WTF?  I never cared much about Sugar, although I like a lot of the score.

What really good musicals have been adapted from brilliant films?

Once...well, that's a very good musical, but I've never seen the film, so I don't know if it would be considered "brilliant." ::)

Smiles of a Summer Night/A Little Night Music

Yes!  I've actually seen both!

I'll accept that, but Smiles of A Summer Night is a foreign film in Swedish, as opposed to a popular American film.  I can't think of any successful popular movies in well-made musical adaptations, except maybe for Hairspray.  I think the Bergman adaptation, like Once, succeeds because it's not a slavish attempt to put the film on a stage with second-rate stage impersonations of the film's stars.

I'll add The Producers.

Got a WGA residual check today for KEATON'S COP (1990) and CHEYENNE WARRIOR (1994).

Not enough to buy a new car, but certainly enough to take the wife out to a nice dinner.

My late client and friend, Dan O'Herlihy, was in THE LAST STARFIGHTER.

I recall visiting the set at MGM; meeting Robert Preston, who was a charming man.

And Promises Promises, which I had totally forgotten.

The Last Starfighter is not yet a Broadway musical, and God knows what changes might occur during rehearsals getting it there.  I liked the fact that it doesn't try to replicate the film.

Carnival and Promises Promises, like A Little Night Music, are certainly indebted to their source, but they very much have their own tone and style and are not slavish imitations of the films they were adapted from.
