I'm of a mixed opinion about the book. It goes far, but probably not far enough to make it work completely.

I sympathize. I didn’t finish it because I found it very annoying. I practically memorized that book when a was a kid, and I’m very particular about how the story is told and what the characters look like

Took a break from the big Barbirolli box to listen to the little Barbirolli box of RCA and Columbia recordings. Six CDs and I'll tell you something - these recordings are all from around 1937 when he conducted for the New York Phil - and they sound AMAZING and so much better than the shellac transfers in the other set from a decade later.
