I’ve watched part of it but haven’t yet gotten through the Met’s current Porgy and Bess.

I find it sterile, for lack of a better one-word description. And I’m put off by the Gershwin estate’s hijacking of the title, especially when used in the opera house. (Maybe I’m remembering wrong that that BS started with the Broadway production?)

DR Elmore — did you by any chance see their first production in 1984/1985? I always regretted not getting to the east coast for that. It might very well not have been a perfect realization either, but I’ll bet it had the passion and drive. I wonder if my off-the-air recording still plays. It had a couple of gaps in it because of a transmission problem that day, and those were still the pre-high fidelity days of the Met broadcasts.

I saw the old production live.  My friend Bruce Hubbard was Jake, as I recall.  Karla Burns might have been in it as well.  My memory is that Levine conducted too slowly, and that's the only memory I have of it.

The new Met production was the first time I’d seen Porgy and Bess all the way through. I couldn’t watch Trevor Nunn’s film because the lip syncing was so atrocious. I couldn’t even watch a bootleg of the Broadway with Audra and Norm, because it didn’t sound right. Tinny and thin. But I agree about this one not being in tip-top shape. Is there a video of one that is?

There's a bootleg of the 2002 City Opera performance that I remember enjoying.  John deMain conducts this score really well.

That's too bad, because I know his passion for the piece and those were the days when his conducting energy knew no bounds. I think he had been critical of the Cleveland Orchestra recording for that same reason, among others.

Another one I missed was his first time doing it in a late-70s Cincinnati May Festival. They used to broadcast those big pieces, and I've looked for an off-the-air recording of that with no luck.

All that talk between DR JANE and DR IRIS about Maryland reminded me that my niece and her husband live in Point of Rocks....he works at Bethesda Games - the company owned by Linda (Wonder Woman) Carter and her husband.

My niece worked there for many years as well - but left to concentrate on her writing.....

NOW here is a cat story that I just heard.

My uncle who is going through chemo therapy has two cats....a long hair and a short hair.  I don't see them often because they run and and hide when company comes....but they come out now and then to see - being curious cats.

He was driving home from the store about 8 years ago and passed a trailer court that had a sign reading "Free Cats."  So he stopped.

There were several adult cats and a dozen or so kittens a few months old.  He picked up two of them and couldn't make up his mind.  He asked the man if he could have them both.  The man said: "You can have them all if you like."

So he took the two.

A few weeks later a friend was visiting and liked the cats....and they liked him.....my uncle said there are plenty if you want one and gave him directions to the trailer park.

A few days later he asked his friend if he got his cat.   His friend said no.  He stopped and the man told him that two days after my uncle got his cats - someone poisoned ALL of his cats, the adults and the kittens.  He had only his one indoor kitty left......

Two kitties escaped because of my uncle......

Well last night I was looking on some Roku Channels and this show popped up....from 1956-57.....Giant Step with Bert Parks.

I had never heard of it.  It is entertaining and horrifying all at the same time.  The comments on the YouTube video answered my question about what happened to the young man who was the winner on the show.....

The thinking music may be familiar to readers here at HHW.

I had to look up Point of Rocks.  The area looks remote and very pretty.

Of all the Golden Globes nominations, the one that surprises me the most James Corden for best actor musical or comedy in The Prom.

But, you did get Audra MacDonald schmoozing backstage before the show, at intermission, and after. I really hate that stuff. Just do the damn opera.
