I don't believe I ever had a recording of The Gypsy Baron, but I went to pull out my vocal score and it's nowhere to be found. I don't recall giving it to anyone, so, I dunno. It was that orange-cover paperbound one that I'd had since the 1960s. Damn. Oh well.

Friday morning greetings!  It's a paperwork day for me and I'm at my desk dealing with an issue that I probably shouldn't discuss on a public forum.  Nothing life-threatening, but very annoying.

Just listened to the Renée Fleming album. Beautiful stuff, and I had somehow missed that the aria from Herrmann's Wuthering Heights was on there. What a treat. Also especially loved the selections from The Medium, Candide, and The Rake's Progress.

"Summertime" and "My Man's Gone Now" are all right, but now I wonder how long white sopranos can go on singing these in the current non-cultural-appropriation climate. Maybe (Covid and 2020 notwithstanding) that had already slowed to a trickle. I have no idea. It used to be that "everyone" sang and recorded these, apart from the opera, but it's hard to imagine that being accepted now.

CostCo is closing it's photo printing department on February 14 - if any DR uses the service.

We used to now and then, but it's been a number of years now. I think online services like Shutterfly have eaten their lunch.

RIP Christopher Plummer, 91

I was just going to report that.  I met him once at the Drama Book Shop, and he was quite charming.  I liked his biography, too.

According to the Times:

Oy.

I think the context is important. The most haunting version of Summertime that I have ever heard and will likely ever hear was sung by a group of Soviet women, all white, dressed as workers and dreaming of a better life. But I doubt Mel Torme would get to play Porgy nowadays, even on a recording.

I saw this headline that fits our discussion of markets.
