Well, this is real interesting...Listen to haunting notes from an 18,000-year-old conch shell trumpet.

Archaeologists in 1931 assumed the shell was only a broken drinking cup.

I was so devastated to read that Mary Wilson passed away this week. She was actually my favorite Supreme. Of course, I love Miss Ross, but she got to be a bit much. Mary was just heaven on earth. R.I.P. Mary. I hope you and Florence are singing together forever.

She died about a month before her 77th birthday.

DR TCB, I saw the original Broadway cast in A Little Night Music, and I thought Ms Johns was absolutely glorious. Much as I love Lansbury who was perfection in Sweeney Todd, I can't see, or vocally hear, her as Desiree. Six months after I saw A Little Night Music, I saw it again, and Johns was out. I saw the beautiful Barbara Lang, her standby, who gave a competent performance and no more.

My favorite Gypsy recording? Merman, hands down. That is one great cast recording. My first recording was the soundtrack, since I'd seen and loved the film. The Lanscury recording is very good and I wish I'd seen it, but I always return to Ethel.

I've seen in performances of Gypsy Bette Midler, Patti LuPone, and Tyne Daly, who was the best, but I find her recording, like her Call Me Madam, hard to listen to without the visuals because you can hear the pitch problems too clearly. In 1998, Daly played the Elsa Maxwell role in my reconstruction of Jubilee, and she was the best - and most pleasant - of the three leading ladies.
