THE SWANNIEST SWAN LAKE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes featured both swans and lakes and a constipated Mark Wahlberg, and now it is time for you to post until the constipated cows come home.

George, I know tonight was not the Tony’s.  First of all, it is not Sunday.  But more importantly, it was a joke, because we were on page 8.

Obviously, I don't always read things as "jokes" online without a winking emoji: ;)

But, I really was wondering anyway, so I went ahead and looked it up.  Now, at least, I know. :)

I looked up the definition. After the definition, it said, "Sometimes used as a postpositive."

I slept rather poorly, and I had one strange dream of working at some summer theatre camp. I remember next to nothing aboput it.

All this talk of swans reminds me of that famous anecdote about Moravian tenor Leo Slezak:

He was a convivial person, and there are many anecdotes revealing his amiable sense of humor. The best-known example is as follows. During a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin, a stage hand pulled the swan off the stage too early, before the tenor had had a chance to hop aboard. Seeing his feathered transportation disappear into the wings, Slezak ad-libbed to the audience: "Wann fährt der nächste Schwan?" ("When does the next swan leave?")

BK, I have a plethora of Sleeping Beauty DVDs and CDs, Of the CDs, I like the complete ones by Previn, Bonynge, and Dorati, who conducted it for years with the Ballets Russes. I think it's my favorite Tchaikovsky composition, and my complaint with every staged production I've seen is that they all have to make cuts in the score; otherwise, the ballet with intermissions would last close to four hours, and they all make different cuts.

When the Royal Ballet, formerly Sadlers Wells Ballet, reopened after the war, the chose ballet was The Sleeping Beauty, with glorious designs by Oliver Messel. The production was a hit as well in the company's first trip to the US. NBC, I believe, broadcast a performance starring the reigning Royal Ballet superstar Margot Fonteyn, which I saw around 1953. The kinescope has been released on DVD.

When the sets got too old, the Royal Ballet created a new production designed by the designer of Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. I really detest her designs, and this is my least favorite DVD.

Around 2000, to celebrate the post-WW2 production, the Messel designs were redone, and there are two DVDs, both from the dread Opus Arte company.  The first DVD starred Alina Cojacaru, and the second stars my current favorite Royal Ballet dancer, Maianela Nuñez. They are both quite lovely, but you may want to see what Opus Arte "auteur" is controlling the video.

The Russians, too, love The Sleeping Beauty, and go all out for the spectacle. Both the Bolshoi and Kirov go all out with it. I saw the Kirov around 2000 perform at the Metropolitan Opera House their recreation of the original St Petersburg production, and it was truly wonderful, with a huge cast of adults and children, and it may have been the fullest production of the score that I've seen, To my knowledge, it has never been committed to video.

The Dutch National Ballet, created by Sir Peter Wright, is also very nicely done, and I recommend it as well.

Anyway, after much juggling of the flames, I finally got the meat stabilized at the desired simmer. I might have to watch it a little less for a while.
