That's pretty cool about meeting Laurence Guittard, BK.  Not only was he the original Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in the original Broadway production of A Little Night Music, he went on to play Fredrik Egerman in the 1996 London production with Judi Dench as Desiree Armfeldt. :)

I am very tired this morning, although I slept rather well. It was quite chilly last night so I had all three cats trying to keep warm and cuddling up with me.

Intermezzi were essentially scene change music within an act. In the case of Cavalleria Rusticana, it covers a curtain drop to represent the passage of time. I know of two such intermezzi in musical theater: Naughty Marietta and The Student Prince. I needed one for Dearest Enemy to cover the scene change between Act Two and the Epilogue, so I wrote this, based on the song "Bye ans Bye" and a theme from Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty:

He’d go around correcting everybody, but it didn’t go too well for him. It didn't work out too well.”

The first of October here is a bit on the cool side, but otherwise a gorgeous early fall day.

I'm saying early fall because the trees are still basically green. We think we're enjoying a late change of color thanks to all the rain this summer.

At 7:30 I lay down for a bit, fell asleep with Thatch buried under the blanket next to me, and woke at 8:45. I just finished kitty cleanup and making the bed.

On the first of the month, we get the new schedule of events that we sign up to usher. It’s for two months out, so today brought the December schedule.

There were no Nutcracker performances on the schedule.

There were a few symphony performances, even though the musicians are on strike.

Tonight, in fact, we're reviving an old tradition.

We have a group of friends who live in a nearby rural town, and it's a years-long tradition for them to welcome the Halloween season (because it really is a "season" here) by gathering at a local country graveyard, enjoying a cocktail or whatever their pleasure might be, and taking in the lovely change-of-season surroundings in good company -- said company being us live ones and a number of revolutionary war-era ones.

That becomes kind of a hangout for them through the month of October, but I've generally been too busy to join them much over these past few years. Of course I've got a crazy schedule now with early rehearsals for the show, but the three of us are going up there this evening to relax and take it all in. Looking forward to it.

Also

(and to continue the double-Friday TOD)...

In preparation for the film event on Sunday, I watched the first half of Spartacus yesterday, up through the intermission, and it is surely the most glorious movie of its genre.

It's actually a bit shocking to sift through whatever information may actually be reliable, to learn that there was strife among virtually everyone involved. Even knowing that it had a history of people being replaced and taking forever to complete, etc., it's sobering to be reminded that the ill feelings among most of the creatives didn't just end with Stanley Kubrick more or less disowning it as not part of his oeuvre. They nevertheless created an incredible motion picture that lives through the ages.

I will soon begin watching the second half, followed by all the extra features on the Blu-ray and on the older Criterion DVD. I'll save whatever commentaries there are for tomorrow, then sleep on it all for Sunday.
