Good ole Mercury retrograde. My last few days have been full of foul-ups, but minor ones, fortunately. Yesterday I returned 3 Amazon items to my local Whole Foods. The two pair of jeans were under one QR code. I'd folded both pair and put them in the plastic bag they'd come in. The system acknowledged one pair, but not the other. After much consternation I was finally able to do an online chat with someone at Amazon today -- they don't make it easy to get to a real person -- and was refunded for the second pair of jeans. They want everything to go through their menus, but there's no menu item for this because it's not supposed to happen! All seems to be well now.

That was an odd error.  I am glad you were able to sort it out.

I might stop by later when very few people are around.  I know I got a couple of other packages and I don't want to wait until Monday to get them.

Might someone just meet you at the door and hand them to you?

Off to eat some barbecue.

John G treats his upset stomach by eating barbecue. Humm... I don't think that would work for me. For his stomach barbecue must feel normal.

I have a birthday party to attend tomorrow evening.

It is the first birthday of Miss Audrey James Moore, a 2nd cousin.  She is a sweet little girl, and her parents felt the need to rent a nice venue and invite tons of family and friends to celebrate.  The reason, I guess, is because they both work full-time and Audrey is in the care of her grandmother (my 1st cousin Debra) during the week.  Many family members have yet to see her in person, so the idea was to do a get-together for the event.

I doubt Audrey will get any appreciation out of it...but her parents will.

My fear is that the event will be a super-spreader.  I daresay few, if any other than myself, will wear masks.

I hope I am mistaken.

I hope no one gets sick. Poor little Audrey!

So, I was able to make an appointment to get a PCR test by a company that has a kiosk/trailer downtown.

Glad you found someplace. Your insurance picked up the cost or are they given free?
(They're usually free here, but they still ask for insurance info)

Well, Kaiser's website says that they don't do Covid testing unless you need it for surgery, or some other important event.  Going back to work didn't qualify. ::)

Going back to work is important to you AND the employer paying for Kaiser.

True except there are too many people wanted covid tests.  The hospitals by us say do not go to the ER for testing.  One hospital near us had a drive through testing site, by appointment only.  I thought Kaiser might have done something like that, but then you need the space to do it in.

I have seen drive-thru test sites using the public street. You lose some parking spaces, but needs must.

Actually, I can see how it happened. The WF person probably assumed there was just one pair in the bag. I think the problem was partly because the QR code was for both pair. In the future I'll try to get a separate QR code for each item I'm returning. Amazon was good about it, but you don't have a receipt until it's acknowledged and could be <insert your favorite phrase>.

I'm getting so goooood at sleuthing this guy's videos. He has no idea where this is - only identified as "California" in the 40s. He's right about the decade. But CA is a very big state. I got the first part of the video pretty quickly because a) it looked really familiar and b) the Kelly Music Building gave it away, as that's a historical landmark. Westwood Blvd. in the 1940s. That entire sequence is Westwood, including all the houses.

Once it switches to the night footage it's obvious we're in downtown LA but where??? Then we pass a movie marquee and since the double bill is easy to read, it was easy to research. Not. Top-billed Champagne Waltz opened in early 1937. Easy. Second feature, The Young in Heart opened in late 1938, so, not so easy all of a sudden. Obviously, the double bill had to have been in 1939 when The Young in Heart went wide. But nope, nothing. It played like crazy but never on this double bill. And what theater was it. My eyes finally lit on the side of the marquee, which rather than listing the movies, had something else written on it. Took me a minute but I got it - Merritt Building. Well, still there at Broadway and 8th. Once I knew that was the corner I knew it was the Olympic Theater and that we're driving down 8th towards B'way, which is exactly where the Maxwell House coffee shop was until the 1950s. From there, I simply searched Champagne Waltz and Olympic and for each year from 39 on. And finally found it - March 4, 1942, a full five years after Champagne Waltz first came out. Go know. They love me on this guy's YouTube channel :)

https://youtu.be/eMFRJqddlqc  Westwood stuff is at the start - theater appears around 6:50.

I'm sure some of you will remember when I put up the Kiki's Delivery Service anime cel in the last Indiegogo campaign - can't remember what the price was but I think it was under $1,000. I told everyone then that it was an incredible deal and investment and no one bit. What a shame. Bonham's is auctioning off a similar cell right now - opening bid? $15,000, with a high estimate of $25,000. Glad no one bit :)

DR Ron Pulliam - are not the child's parents concerned about giving COVID to their child, when said child can't yet be vaccinated?  Sounds dicey to me.

No, they aren't at all convinced that Covid19 is actually real.  I have heard them expound upon it ad nauseum.  I love them, but they are stupid.

How does Debra feel about this?

She doesn't say a word about it.

I will, of course, have one of my new N95 masks on.

Absolutely wear a new mask, and if you plan to use it again air it out for a few days, best even to put it in a paper bag.

What will you do though about eating and drinking?

Remove myself from the fray.  There should be room to separate myself.  I will have to remove it to eat and drink, much the same as I would in a restaurant.

Rib-eyes have been my favorite category so far. Just got through with pinto beans, which were all over the map. Some were too al dente, others were mush. Weird spice combinations, too much epazote or oregano. Some used bacon, others used stringy beef. Some had a thick broth, others thin. It was kinda like judging an amateur chili competition.

I never thought of pinto beans as something special to judge.  What were your favorites?

Simple, Tex-Mex style. A little bacon, a little cayenne pepper on the finish. Beans that are perfectly cooked, slightly thick broth, enough salt.

Watching The Sparks Brothers. Hagiography doesn't work if you don't worship the subject. I haven't come to worship them yet. I don't know their work, but their version of Do-Re-Mi was interesting.

The Sparks Brothers is 2 hours and 20 minutes LONG. I really like it, but after the exhausting day I had, I want to go to bed with only 15 minutes left.
