Mahler really used the triangle a little in his second symphony. It reminded me of Martin Short’s Ed Grimley character on SNL, who also played — or at least tried to — the triangle.

There was one moment where the player didn’t dampen quickly enough and that tinkle echoed a second too long. It didn’t matter.

The only recording of the Mahler 2nd Symphony I have is late Bernstein in his “overthink everything” mode. It’s so lugubrious that it doesn’t sound anything like the piece I heard Friday.
