It's so nice not to have to worry about the show.

Are you really thinking of stopping doing the shows if the model doesn't get more financially secure?

I know I said that yesterday the temp here was 909 degrees, however it was NOT quite that high.

It could get there later, DR Jrand74. All things are possible.

DR ChasSmith, we’re among those who go out a lot less than we used to.  Pandemic had something to do with it, but I think it’s also an age thing.

Oh, that applies to me as well. I am one of the guilty. Hell, I'll wager it applies to most of us here to one extent or another. I even keep SAYIG* I'm going to get better at going out to things, but only occasionally does it happen.

*Edit:  SAYING.  Good Lord.

DR CHAS SMITH that is the documentary.

I knew next to nothing about Z TV....so it was interesting to me.

It's definitely interesting. I was just hoping to see/hear little reminders of the actual thing playing.

I checked, and I do have the DVD, so I'm taking it out to watch again. I only saw it once, and it sounds like DR Rodzinski most definitely beat me to it, if he posted about it way before I was even here.

Per IMDb, the US release date of the documentary is 2004. Amazon says I bought the DVD in 2012, which is when I first heard of it. But they say the DVD had been released in 2005. I wonder why I heard of it so late. Well, I'm just glad I did.

Another such doc that is essential to the likes of moi is "All Things Must Pass", about Tower Records. I gobbled that up the very week the Blu-ray was released.

And another pour moi is "One Six Right", about Van Nuys Airport. Gotta love these things that are actually about something you lived and breathed. Naturally, you'll find little things wrong or sadly missing when it's subjects you really know, but they're still must-haves.

Yet another doc that should have been essential for me is "Los Angeles Plays Itself". I think BK has posted about this one. As I vaguely recall, in two hours and fifty minutes, they keep returning to the same handful of films, and it's the most woefully inadequate attempt at this subject that I can imagine. Of course a doc that really did the job thoroughly would probably be a ten-hour one, which I personally would eat up, but...

I hope I'm not remembering it incorrectly. That was my strong impression at the time, and I just remember being very disappointed in it. Maybe someone else will disagree.

But that's enough documentary nostalgia from me.

It would be too easy to go down a rabbit hole on some of these subjects.

I have to find a way to make it work at that club - it has up until now, except for last year's anniversary show - that one didn't sell that well, although I broke even, barely. So, I'd be nervous to do that show this year although we should do our fifteenth anniversary somewhere. I'd still like to do five or six a year - I just wish there was another venue.

Los Angeles Plays Itself is one of the most disappointing, bloated, pretentious, and awful documentaries - LA is a great subject.

Didn't you have a somewhat smaller cast for this one? And therefore, maybe fewer personal reach-outs to other people?

I can't believe there aren't hundreds of people in L.A. who haven't yet been to this kind of show, but are tuned in enough to these things to hear about it and say yeah, that's for me, let's go.

Personally I think people should simply ignore the first lady and stop talking/complaining about her.  DR Singdaw, this one is great. ;D

The ones I had were good.  Bryan got some for Craig along with regular ones for us when we lived in Ashland.

Part of the problem is club hopping. When we were in the same place for years and doing them every month on a specific day, then people always knew the where and when and they did come every single month. But I don't have that in me anymore - how I did that for ten years is both amazing and baffling. But Catalina is just too big for us and the deal there is they want at least ninety or a hundred people there and more if possible. The most any other club we were in seated was around 110, so that if we had 80 it was a really full room. Catalina can seat over 200, which is what we had for the Richard celebration of life concert last year - I actually made a lot of money on that one. The shows cost 1350. That's with five performers getting paid, and the MD. That's what I have to make back. Anyway, we'll see how things are in September, which is when we'd do the next show, and then maybe one in October, then the holiday show.

That was after we first attempted to go to Voodoo Doughnuts on a Sunday morning.  We waited in the long line for about half an hour.  Those who wanted coffee went and got it.  Once they returned we decided the wait would be about another hour and we left.

But the majority of our shows always had five cast members and one guest star.

Thursday morning greetings!  I had my echocardiogram on Tuesday and it must not have shown anything too alarming.  They let me leave and I haven’t heard anything from the doctor, so I’m hoping no news is good news.

Great news.  Thanks for the update.  I have been thinking of you and hoping all your tests are ok.

Remember when IFC was mostly showing uncut independent films and docs? I think that’s where I first saw it.

I wrestle in my head with documentaries. I so often end up disappointed, maybe because, like Chas said, if you know a topic well, you’re bound to notice the things left out and the inaccuracies. They are an overview for the uninitiated. But than again, why should inaccuracies be tolerated? Or fake timeline shifts or over-reliance on the point of view of the random people who agreed to talk? I’d prefer just watching uncut interviews and 10 hours of amazing footage. But that’s my problem. Nobody short of Ken Burns is making those docs.

It was very nice that someone remembered me on All that Chat yesterday.  (The problem that started with Ann Miner there never made any sense to me.  But nice that Ann Miner left those two posts up.)
