John Stamos sang "King Herod's Song" for one night only Friday August 1 at the Hollywood Bowl
At 2:19 here

John Stamos suddenly stepped into the role because Josh Gad had Covid.  Josh Gad was there on Saturday and Sunday

There's a new book in my Kindle app this morning!

That's two new HHW Kindle books in the span of a week. Amazing, no?

I was about to say I should watch that To Olivia movie in spite of the sauce, but on re-reading BK's notes, I think not. I do still need to watch The Patricia Neal Story which - the only time I saw it was by chance when I was en route to God knows where and I found it on the motel TV. At least that's my memory of it, which is pretty vague, so who knows, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Amazon somehow is saying it can deliver the paperback "Richard and Me" to me by Wednesday.

Does that sound possible?

I was always enchanted by Patricia Neal, probably since seeing The Day the Earth Stood Still as a kid. That voice, that face.

Fast forward to 2016 or 2017. I was playing or attending something at The Gary-The Olivia Theater on the grounds of the Abbey at Regina Laudis. The show's director brought this woman over to introduce her to me. It was a friend, Tessa Dahl, who was visiting that week. I was stunned. I'm sure my jaw was resting comfortably on the floor as we stood there and talked. It was like looking into the face of, and hearing, Patricia Neal. Patricia Neal was standing there talking to me, as outgoing and friendly as could be. It was the most intense such resemblance to someone that I've ever experienced. I really didn't want it to end, but she was hustled out shortly thereafter.

The original connection to the place was that (Mother) Dolores Hart, with the help of her friend Patricia Neal, started that theater (also note its name), and Hart was probably there that evening. Oh wait, that was probably her own 50th anniversary celebration at the Abbey, and why Tessa would have made a point of being there. I miss that place. The couple who had directed the shows there moved to the west coast shortly before Covid, then the place closed to the public because of the pandemic and I don't think they've yet found anyone who can get it going again. Must check on that. I loved doing a few things there, and being around Hart and the others there in the summers (it's a lovely open-air theeder).

Monday morning greetings!  The only thing on my calendar this week is my Friday cardiologist appointment.  Isn’t life exciting?

Yes. Indeed. Hope all goes well.

A favorite Patricia Neal movie was Robert Altman's Cookie's Fortune. Sadly I don't own a copy which is selling for beaucoup bucks, even used.

Reading The River Is Waiting. It's long and it's tough going, but I do like Wally Lamb's writing.

I bought my first computer by mail.....it was an off brand....B I G clunky monitor and a B I G  box of works.....and a crazy dot matrix printer....oh no wait...

MY FIRST computer was a Tandy that actually worked very well. I did not get on the inner web with it....

But with my second computer - I bought a disc for $99 and I had a separate phone line put in....and walla! I was on the web.

First computer:

Commodore 128 (128k of RAM!) and 5" floppy disk drive. My old 9" Gold Star TV served as the monitor.

It was the fall of 1985. I'd just been exposed to the Apple IIc we had at work, on which I learned the basics of VisiCalc, their first spreadsheet program. I loved that, and decided I should have a computer at home. A coworker knew a lot about both the Apple and Commodore lines, and I eventually decided on the latter for my "system".

I soon added a printer and then a modem - 300 baud at first, but I quickly moved into the fast lane with a 1200. First online experiences were the BBS for the computer club I was in, a few other BBS's, followed by QuantumLink - the beginnings of America Online which was only for Commodore computers at that time. How special! And you could actually TALK TO PEOPLE on that. Imagine! Heady days, those.

Since I was a co-major in computer science in college, I was using the school's computers to do programming as far back as the late 1970s.

And quite a lot of my work in the 1980s already involved computer owned by my employers.

My own first computer in the home environment (as opposed to when I used Skip's computer) was a Mac around the mid-1990s.  My first memory (besides email) of using the internet was Saturday Review Online.

Thank you, DR Freddie!  I decided last night that being tired all the time is really boring.

My first computer, an iMac, was given to me by the late Tams-Witmark librarian Dale Kugel. John McGlinn had broughgt me onto the Packard Humanities Institute project, I needed a computer, and Dale offered me his since he was getting a new one. So, I was given an aging iMac with Finale already installed, and for a birthday gift about six months early, Dale gave me a year's service from a now-defunct company, Mac Mechanix, which was run by an actor, John Greenleaf. He remained my Mac man for years, until he moved to Los Angeles around 2015.
