I had a major brain fart this morning: I kept reading the posts and thinking, this sounds familiar. When I got to the post about Rupert the dancing cat, I realized I had read the posts yesterday morning. I am now caught up. Oy!

When I picked up the mail yesterday morning, there was a disturbing one that needs immediate action this morning, so I expect to be tied up in a bureaucratic telephone call most of the morning.

Hot dogs! I have posted in the past about the amazing hot dogs from the Liberty Restaurant in Middleton, Ohio. They were the stuff dreams are made of.

I think my favorite was the Nathan's in the food court at the Danbury Mall.

I think my favorite was the Nathan's in the food court at the Danbury Mall.

Same here! I had fallen in love, so to speak, with Nathan's and their hot dogs at Coney Island, and while we still had the Nathan's in the mall, I'd go there and have the same thing I had at the beach:  chili dog with onions. I believe I didn't even bother with cheese, the hot dogs themselves and their chili were so damned perfect. You didn't have the salt air and atmosphere and all, but that hot dog and - yes, fries, too - were absolutely recognizable as being the same.

I'm sorry to say the one in the mall left years ago. I can count (let me think...) at least half a dozen places that were my favorites in the Danbury food court as I originally knew it, that are now no longer. They've redesigned the place somewhat a couple of times over the years, but that doesn't excuse the fact that we lost places I liked. They could have gotten rid of others instead! :)  A most notable loss a few years ago was Danbury's one and only Panda Express, and that still burns my ASS.

I know I've done the hot dog posts before. I'd love to go through mine and pull out what I've written before, and give a good update, but I have no desire to spend the hour or two or even longer that it would take to search through my posts. I think I summarized the different "styles" of hot dogs and where I've had some of my favorites of each.

To begin with BK's story, though:  I, who lived in L.A. for 17 years, never had a Pink's hot dog. There was another famous place, too, what was it? Tail o' the Pup! Never had one of theirs, either. But I should explain:  I grew up eating and liking hot dogs like everyone else, but by the time I'd been through school and was living on my own, I kind of didn't bother with them. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers, and then Mexican fast food, had become what I loved, and I just never looked back at hot dogs, even to try famous ones like Pink's. I'm thinking I might have had one at Tommy's or Carney's with the spicy hot chili and all, but even there the focus was burgers.

To come back around to DR singdaw's post, I think Nathan's at Coney Island in the 1990s or thereabouts was my re-entry into the world of hot dogs. I began to want to try them in different places, and I eventually began making it a regular thing to have good ones in the house for throwing on the grill outside.

I left out an important interim period. I ignored hot dogs in L.A., but thanks to my one year in the 'burbs of Chicago in the mid-1980s, I quickly learned about the Chicago hot dog and fell absolutely in love with them. On moving back to California, I initially stayed with friends in the Long Beach area, and a place whose name will eventually come to me had just opened up right there in the heart of Long Beach, and they specialized in completely authentic Chicago hot dogs. I was able to introduce my friends to them, and they immediately loved them.

TOD: My DH is from Chicago, so we used to go to a Chicago Hot Dog place here in town. We haven't recently, since being old ruined our blood test results.

As I think about it now, I still don't get hot dogs when I'm out, for the most part. The Costco one for $1.50 with "soda" is still fun to have once in a while, but two things have diminished it:  they changed from Coke (my lifelong favorite) to Pepsi, and they stopped having onions in addition to relish, mustard, and ketchup. I keep meaning to complain about that, but I'm sure that no matter their reason, the complaint will be meaningless to them. But I should still do it, in person and online. Right? Right.

As for what I have on them:  Well, the Chicago dog is unique with all of its additives and I won't go into that again. At Nathan's, chili became a favorite item (and when I was eating out a lot, a favorite meal was a chili, cheese and onion omelet - these work perfectly together with the eggs just like with hot dogs). I'm a typical snob when it comes to putting ketchup on hot dogs, but I tried one with it last year and enjoyed it, just as an occasional alternative. I've learned it's possible to return to liking *some* childhood things, certainly without liking them all.

You know what? I'm at a loss to list the various ways I like them. LOTS of ways. Just give me a good brand (I definitely like those with a natural casing, but the brand's flavors are even more important - Nathan's and Sabrett are a couple of favorites), have a good mustard handy, onions (raw, not cooked like the soupy NYC street hot dogs), and we'll go from there. I find I need cheese on hot dogs less than I used to. But not all melted and goopy. When I do have it, I think a finely-grated cheddar like you get on Cincinnati chili is the way to go. But..... there are so many combinations of things that are wonderful that I'll just look forward to reading other people's favorites, and then stealing the ideas.

DR Laura, I hear ya, re blood tests and such. I'm definitely a bit more moderate in my habits these days, even though I haven't been ordered to be. And I'll continue to get better at that.

TOD:  Besides the ones already mentioned, Nedick's hot dogs with their orange drink were a real favorite.

Franks in a blanket are a favorite, especially when they show up at cocktail parties.

Wikipedia tells me Nedick's as I knew it closed in 1981.

Someone tried to resurrect the brand in the 2000's, but I never tried those.

HA! We always had a hot dog at the drug store soda fountain. The dogs were stuck on one of those spike sticks that went around and around.

Usually with just mustard.

As I got older I would have them with chili sauce. And my mom would make them in the sauce and let them be in the pan for quite awhile.

I still like to broil my Oscar Mayer dogs in the over and add shredded cheese.

No catsup - but for a change up I now and then add a dollop of Duke's.

I said I like to grill them at home, but if I'm doing it indoors I'll broil them. Or I'll put the oven on "bake" and they still get nicely cooked on an ungreased baking pan. I haven't cooked them on the stovetop in years.
