As I think about it now, I still don't get hot dogs when I'm out, for the most part. The Costco one for $1.50 with "soda" is still fun to have once in a while, but two things have diminished it: they changed from Coke (my lifelong favorite) to Pepsi, and they stopped having onions in addition to relish, mustard, and ketchup. I keep meaning to complain about that, but I'm sure that no matter their reason, the complaint will be meaningless to them. But I should still do it, in person and online. Right? Right.
As for what I have on them: Well, the Chicago dog is unique with all of its additives and I won't go into that again. At Nathan's, chili became a favorite item (and when I was eating out a lot, a favorite meal was a chili, cheese and onion omelet - these work perfectly together with the eggs just like with hot dogs). I'm a typical snob when it comes to putting ketchup on hot dogs, but I tried one with it last year and enjoyed it, just as an occasional alternative. I've learned it's possible to return to liking *some* childhood things, certainly without liking them all.
You know what? I'm at a loss to list the various ways I like them. LOTS of ways. Just give me a good brand (I definitely like those with a natural casing, but the brand's flavors are even more important - Nathan's and Sabrett are a couple of favorites), have a good mustard handy, onions (raw, not cooked like the soupy NYC street hot dogs), and we'll go from there. I find I need cheese on hot dogs less than I used to. But not all melted and goopy. When I do have it, I think a finely-grated cheddar like you get on Cincinnati chili is the way to go. But..... there are so many combinations of things that are wonderful that I'll just look forward to reading other people's favorites, and then stealing the ideas.
