THE SVELTE ME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here it is, Friday, the beginning of Labor Day Weekend, a weekend in which most people will do no labor. I will, however, be doing some labor, i.e. attending my show. Not that that’s really labor, other than a labor of love. Last night’s performance was very good – the audience was a bit subdued at first, but they seemed to get into the spirit of things after a while. This happens sometimes when there is a preponderance of elderly people – it takes them a bit longer to catch on to what we’re doing, but I must say, once they do they’re a great audience. Mr. Michael Kerker of ASCAP was there and he seemed to enjoy it very much. He said he’d seen a similar revue in Chicago recently that did exactly what some of the critics have asked us to do – have it all be spoofs or What Ifs. He said that after four numbers of that show he just tuned out, and what he really liked about ours was the eclectic variety of it all. We’ve also received two more reviews, apparently both raves, but I haven’t seen them because Tammy forgot to bring them. I should have them in the morning and then I shall post them. The new song worked really well, I thought, and did exactly what I hoped it would do – it kept the audiences attention throughout, and they seemed to really enjoy the story it was telling – it got a few laughs, too, which I wasn’t sure would happen, and Tammy got a really nice applause at the end. She’ll get better and better, too, as she gets more secure playing it in front of an audience. The song, for those that have been wondering, is about a girl remembering her yearning to be in Annie, and her finally getting to do the show, albeit as Molly, not Annie – until the Annie gets strep throat and she has to go on and save the day. I wrote is specifically for Tammy’s voice and vocal range, and she does it really well. It’s fun to write like that – knowing exactly who is going to sing it, how they sing, their strengths and their weaknesses. The music is perky and it was just one of those tunes that came tumbling out of me, full-blown (just like our opening number did). The lyric, on the other hand, took me a week-and-a-half to write, which is very unusual for me. I just had a bit of trouble with the storyline and what it should be and how it should progress. Once I got the first two verses and the first chorus, then I began to understand it, but it still took longer than I expected. The bottom line is it seems to work better in the position its placed in in the show. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

My goodness, that was a paragraph, wasn’t it? That was a paragraph and a half. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m sure I’ll have something else to say in the next section.

I rode the exercise bike at the gym, which I enjoyed very much. Soon I will be buff and toned with abs and buns of steel and I will be a sight to behold walking down the street in my t-shirt and Speedos. People will gawk, I tell you – either that or they’ll throw up on the ground.

Oh, yes, I shall be svelte. Yes, Virginia, I shall be svelte and heart will melt. I shall be lithe and supple and I shall ooze sveltness wherever I go. There will be no one as svelte as I or even as svelte as me.

My former assistant Mauri Bernstein attended the show last night, as did dear reader Jay and some of his cronies. Also, some LACC theater alumni. Tonight I know several people coming, so that will be fun, too.

Now wait just a darned minute – I’ll be horn-swoggled if we don’t have three count them three birthdays to celebrate today. Quick, let’s once again put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora and the Shuffle, because today we are celebrating the birthdays of MattH, Sigerson Holmes and dear reader Noel’s ever-lovin’ Joy. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer, shall we? On the count of three: One, two, three – HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATTH, SIGERSON HOLMES AND DEAR READER NOEL’S EVER-LOVIN’ JOY!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be svelte. I must also do errands and whatnot, and then I must be on my way to the theater. And, of course, I must enjoy the beginning of the long Labor Day Weekend. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player. I’ll start – CD, still Inside Daisy Clover. DVD, a Brit film entitled Ransom, starring Sean Connery. I’ve never seen it, but I like Mr. Connery and the film sports a score by the late Jerry Goldsmith. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we. In fact, let’s have loads of lovely svelte postings.
