THE MYSTERY OF THE LEEKS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I think the leaks and the mystery of the wet rug are solved for the time being. That only leaves the mystery of the leeks to be solved, but that would tax even Hercule Poirot. The two handymen did their work – it took quite a while. First, they went up on the roof like The Drifters, and cleaned all the rain gutters and the shmootz. Once shmootz was removed (three big bags worth of shmootz, I may add), then one of them went into the bedroom with a quite large sucking machine. This sucking machine sucked all the wet from the carpet and carpet pad, and when he was done there was only a slight moistness left and no spotting. Boy, if you came into these notes late I don’t know what you’d think I was talking about. While the sucking was going on, the other man was up on the roof putting some kind of protection where the leaks were. This is getting worse, isn’t it? What is this all of a sudden, a Randy Vicar story? The bottom line is the leak near the kitchen seems to be fixed, and I haven’t seen any further wetness on the rug in the bedroom. Which brings us to The Mystery of the Leeks. Who made away with the leeks, killing Lord Chutney in the process? That is the mystery we’ll be solving today.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Youth of the Beast. I do not have a clew as to why this film was called Youth of the Beast, since there was neither a youth nor a beast on view. This is another of the wacky Seijun Suzuki films, and since I enjoy his wacky films I enjoyed this one, too. It’s apparently the film that revitalized the Yakuza genre in Japan. It’s nice and short, very stylish and yes, wacky, with a fun jazzy score. I have the feeling that quite a few filmmakers were influenced by Mr. Suzuki’s stylish filmmaking. The DVD is from Criterion and the transfer is perfectly fine.

Speaking of clews – the leeks were in the pantry, being watched over by kitchen maid Hermoine. She had to use the facilities and that is when the leeks disappeared. When she returned, there were no leeks, just the dead body of her employer, the detestable Lord Chutney.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because we must solve The Mystery of the Leeks, and I have the feeling there will be more clews in the next section.

Well, I was wrong. There don’t seem to be any clews in this section. However, the only people at home were Hermoine, who was using the facilities, Lord Chutney, who was dead as an English pudding, Lord Chutney’s wife, Lady Chutney, their son, Cheltham Chutney, their cousin, young Wallaby Willoughby, and the butler, Cutler. Of course, in the stable there was Squire Meyer, so let’s not discount him either. They all had motive for stealing the leeks and doing away with Lord Chutney.

I believe I have lost my sanity. If anyone finds it, please Fed Ex it back to me.

Today I must really try and get out and do some errands that I’ve put off because of the rain. I’m supposed to go see a play in the evening, but that all depends on the weather.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, solve The Mystery of the Leeks, I must do my errands, I must make some more notes (I made no notes yesterday because of having to deal with all this house stuff), and then I shall determine whether or not I shall see a play. Today’s topic of discussion: First topic – solve The Mystery of the Leeks. You have all the characters, and you know what happened. Put those little gray cells to work and come up with a scenario for murder and reveal the killer of Lord Chutney. Was it Cutler the Butler? Was it Cheltham Chutney? Was it Lady Chutney? Was it Wallaby Willoughby? Was it Squire Meyer? Second topic – If you could revive any musical or play, what would it be, why would you revive it, and who would you cast in the leading role(s)? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? It was a dark and stormy night. Lady Chutney entered the kitchen and screamed, for there lay Lord Chutney, prostrate with death. She noticed immediately that not only was her husband quite dead, but the leeks were missing. Who is the killer and what was their motive and how did they do it?
