IF IT’S WEDNESDAY IT MUST BE WEDNESDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, if it’s Wednesday it must be Belgium. No, that can’t be right. If it’s Tuesday it must be Belgium, but it’s Wednesday so it must be something else. Like what, that’s what I’d like to know. If it’s Wednesday it must be Pomona? If it’s Wednesday, it must be Hemet? I’m so confused. But, I shall carry on, although on has never carried me. Why is that? If it’s Wednesday it must be Tustin? If it’s Wednesday it must be Diamond Bar? And might I just ask one other little question? What the HELL am I talking about? If it’s Wednesday it must be Wednesday. There! Finally! I’ve said it and I’m glad. Let’s have no beating around the bush. “Beating around the bush.” You know, I’m just not going to touch that sentence with a ten foot pole or even a five foot czech. I have totally lost any sense of coherence, ahven’t I? “Ahvent I?” What am I, Eliza Doolittle all of a sudden? I tell you, I need some coherence. Perhaps I should tell you about yesterday – yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. And they can stay far away, frankly, or even georgely. Damn them, damn them all to hell. Well, I feel we’re off to a fine start, don’t you? I have somehow managed to type a lot of words and sentences which have no basis in reality whatsoever, and, as you know, that is what I strive for. Where was I? I have no idea. Yesterday, for example, I never stopped going, even though I didn’t have all that much to do. Many calls, many e-mails, a visit to the pressing plant, luncheon with Mr. Grant Geissman, and proofing the Stages/Together Again package, which I’m very pleased with. Then more calls, more e-mails, a lovely meeting with Mr. Terry Trotter, and the decision that we’re going to do a new album together, within the next couple of months. I hired a musical director for the LACC benefit, and, as I mentioned, Miss Diana Canova is on board for the show. I got no count them no packages, but I did get a contract in the mail for our next release and now that it is signed, sealed, and on its way back to those who sent it, I can now reveal to you what the next release is (slated for late October/early November.

But first, I did manage to watch one count them one motion picture on DVD last evening, entitled Garden of Evil, starring Mr. Gary Cooper, Mr. Richard Widmark, Mr. Cameron Mitchell, and the fiery Miss Susan Hayward. I found it quite a turgid little film, and it’s simply not very good, although it has some enjoyable moments thanks to its cast and the nice Cinemascope direction by Mr. Henry Hathaway. The DVD is an import from Spain, and the enhanced transfer is pretty good. There was a UK import with a similar transfer, but in mono. The big selling point of this Spanish edition is the glorious stereophonic sound. Mr. Bernard Herrmann’s hyperactive score sounds incredible. Still, the film, which certain types like very much (they basically like anything that was in Cinemascope and Stereophonic Sound), is really quite boring and the structure of the first forty minutes (riding, a scene, riding, a scene, riding, a scene) is stultifying.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because if it’s Wednesday it must be Wednesday and therefore it is time to tell you about the next Kritzerland release, which you will all be the very first to know about. How is THAT for building suspense?

I am happy to announce that our next Kritzerland release is the original cast album of a new musical entitled The Last Starfighter, from Jonathan Betuel’s screenplay of the same name. It had quite a successful and critically acclaimed run last year in New York, and we’re very excited to be releasing it. Now, here’s the best part – the score is by one of my favorite unsung composers, Mr. Walter “Skip” Kennon, who wrote a wonderful score to the musical of Time and Again. And the book is by our very own dear reader, FJL, aka, Mr. Fred Landau. The score is quite wonderful, and it really captures the flavor of the screenplay to the 1984 film, which was the final film of the legendary Robert Preston. The show (and album) features Charlie Pollock (Urinetown) as Alex, DeeGee Brandemour, Brad Coolidge, Bernardo De Paula (Jesus on TV’s Rescue Me), Jan Leigh Herndon (La Cage Aux Folles), Paul Jackel (Broadway’s The Secret Garden), Hugh Brandon Kelly, Joseph Kolinski, Julia Motyka, Georga Osborne, William Parry (original off-Broadway Assassins, Broadway’s Passion, Sunday In The Park With George, and Dessa Rose), Catherine Remmert, Jonathan Richard Sandler, Heather Spore, and Travis Walters. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Today (which is Wedneday, in case you’d forgotten), I must do many interesting things. I have a phone meeting in the morning with my publisher, then I have a meeting at LACC, then I’m meeting a friend at the Norton Simon museum for an hour or so, then I’m coming home and dealing with more calls and e-mails, and then I’m having dinner with a person that Tammy and I want to physically produce our show. Speaking of the show, we now know we don’t have the Hudson (the “person” whose show was booked was supposed to let the theater know on Monday morning if he was going to extend, and he strung them and us along until late yesterday afternoon – I don’t really care for this fellow, and his show, which hasn’t even gone into rehearsal yet, is already extending – brilliant). So, we’re hoping to hear back from our other theater today, to find out if it will be available in October or November (we’ve been told it IS available one way or the other – just depends on the month). So, I think these things work out the way they’re supposed to, and frankly, I’m tickled pink at the thought of being in walking distance to Musso and Frank. I shall keep you posted.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must go, go, go (that is three gos), and then I must finally sup. Today’s topic of discussion: Since there is so much going on, why don’t we make it an Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any question you like, and we all get to give any answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, along with loads of lovely postings, and remember, if it’s Wednesday it must be Wednesday.
