August 31, 2005:

THE HOCKEY PUCK OF LIFE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here we are on the final day of August. August has been a rather august month, and I am looking forward to a lovelier than lovely September. Yes, we must all put forth our best vibes and xylophones for a lovelier than lovely September. I feel we should all make September a month of bountiful and plentiful pleasures. I feel we should make that our goal, don’t you? I feel that is a fine goal. Let’s take the hockey puck of life and just slam it in for a goal, shall we? Did anyone notice a little sporting metaphor? I did. We had a little hockey puck as life metaphor and I, for one, feel we are better for it. Yes, let us make goal after goal with the hockey puck of life. The Hockey Puck of Life – that’s the title of my next novel, or a Bobby Goldsboro song. Speaking of a Bobby Goldsboro song, I had a strangely strange day yesterday, in which I did strangely strange things – the day seemed to have no real point. I got up, I wrote, and then Mr. Grant Geissman called and asked if lunch was a possibility, and I said yes, so we had a nice long lunch. I then picked up some mail and a package, and I even shipped a couple of packages. I then wrote some more, then got ready to attend an opening night at the Pasadena Playhouse. All the while, I had to deal with lots of e-mail, several long telephonic calls, and various other trifles. I even got a few CD orders, which is always lovely. Speaking of CD orders, I cannot confirm this yet, but I think the first 100 orders for the Kevin Spirtas CD single, will be signed by Mr. Spirtas. Those copies won’t be shipped until the Days of Our Lives episode airs (Mr. Spirtas is back east and won’t be back until the show airs on the 12th of September), but I thought it would be a nice little extra to have those first 100 copies signed. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night I attended the opening night of a one-woman play entitled Tea at Five, starring Miss Kate Mulgrew as Miss Kate Hepburn. Miss Mulgrew, for the most part, does an excellent job of channeling Miss Hepburn, and she’s a fine actress. This sort of show is simply not my cup of tea or coffee or cocoa. There’s no real structure to it, so it never really seems like a “play,” and it just sort of meanders from anecdote to anecdote while Kate just wanders around a beach house set. All the usual topics are covered, and there are some funny and some affecting moments, but I just found my attention wandering often. As I said, I find these types of shows, where the actor is basically doing an impression of someone, very odd. The audience seemed to enjoy it, and gave Miss Mulgrew a standing ovation.

What am I, Ben Brantley all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so we can once again discuss our metaphor of the day – the hockey puck of life, as well as the sweet elusive butterfly of love.

I tell you, we must score one goal after another with the hockey puck of life. We must make every minute count and we must count every minute. We must climb ev’ry mountain and ford every stream or, at the very least, chevrolet ev’ry stream. I feel we’ve gone very New Age here at haineshisway.com, don’t you?

Today I must finish addressing the International preorders, and then, come Thursday or Friday, my shipping helper will come over and we’ll stuff them envelopes and then lug them over to the post office. I’m actually hoping the discs will be ready on Thursday, but I won’t know that until Thursday morning. I must also get back on my serious diet (I’ve been maintaining, but not losing – now I wish to lose weight rather than maintain – remember if I lose weight, I win).

My goodness, that was an especially useless paragraph, wasn’t it? That’s because I’m thinking of the hockey puck of life and scoring goals and making September a month of bountiful and plentiful pleasures.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, I must drive about in my motor car and do some errands, I must hopefully record a little demo if Grant is available in the afternoon, and I must try to watch at least two DVDs this evening. Today’s topic of discussion: Since it is both the end of August and the beginning of September, let’s have an Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like, and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions, really interesting questions, fascinating questions with fascinating rhythm, and let’s also have loads of lovely postings and send August out in high style (mini-skirt and go-go boots), whilst we all make ready to score goals with the hockey puck of life.
