ZEN AND NOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, if it’s Thursday it must be Thursday. My goodness, that was profoundly profound, wasn’t it? That just makes you stop and think, doesn’t it? That’s so Zen, isn’t it? I’m almost recovered from the fall on my ass. I’m a little sore here and there and also there and here, but it’s nothing terrible, and the foot problem is pretty much gone, thank goodness. I did not want to be hobbling around on stage tomorrow night. Speaking of tomorrow night, it seems like we’ll have a few hainsies/kimlets in town and seeing the play, and I hope we can all go out afterwards. I may have to arrive at any post-show soiree a bit late, because if we have to do any pickups after the show, then I have to be there for those. But why am I talking about Friday when it’s Thursday? After all, if it’s Thursday it must be Thursday. That’s so Zen. I’m feeling quite Zen right now. I don’t even know what that means and yet I am feeling quite Zen despite that fact. Did you know that Zen spelled backwards is Nez? And they say that we only right excruciatingly arch prose here at haineshisway.com. Damn them, damn them all to hell. Where was I? Yesterday I had a busy little day, mostly spent stuffing CDs into envelopes. Mr. Kevin Spirtas stopped by and picked up his CDs, and we had a nice chat. He signed some CDs whilst here so I have a few extras. I then went to the postal office and shipped out close to fifty packages. That was ever so much fun. Then I decided I had a hankerin’ for Taco Bell, so I got some to go and ate it whilst watching a DVD. I pretty much stayed away from the telephone almost all the livelong day, except for a nice conversation with Miss Tammy Minoff. I was just not in a telephonic mood yesterday. That happens from time to time. Is anyone feeling the Zenness of these here notes. I know I am.

Yesterday, I managed to watch two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled Jitterbugs, starring Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy. This was from the time they did a few films for Fox. I must say I found Jitterbugs to be almost entirely unfunny. Mr. Laurel, who was fifty-three when the film was shot, looks a decade older, and the whole affair just seemed tired and forced. There were occasional pleasures, just not enough. And that’s supposed to be the best of the Fox titles, so I’m not quite sure that I’ll be able to endure the other two movies in the box set. I then watched the second motion picture on DVD, which was entitled King Kong, a film of Peter Jackson. I’d heard both yay and nay on this film – pretty much split right down the middle. I’m afraid I veer towards the nay side, although I found parts of it very enjoyable. It’s just endless, that’s the first problem. I didn’t mind the very beginning, but the stuff on the boat went on far too long, and then all those animal sequences on the island ultimately became a bore for me. Once was fine, twice was okay, but by the sixth or seventh animals putting everyone in peril sequence, I’d had it. For me, the film has two things that work splendidly – Miss Naomi Watts, who I think is the finest actress of her age working today, and Mr. King Kong. I found Jack Black absolutely insufferable – and actually loathsome and completely out of place. Adrien Brody may be many things, but a leading man he’s not. And all the little subplots on the boat went nowhere and took up too much time. While the CGI Kong is wonderfully done, I hated the CGI New York – every shot looked worse than the old days when they used to do these things with rear screen projection and miniatures. If Mr. Jackson had concentrated a little more on the actual story in the film, and a little less with all his 200 million dollar toys, it would have been shorter and better. The transfer is flawless, as is the sound. Oh, and I absolutely hated the non-stop bombast of James Newton Howard’s score (he replaced Howard Shore).

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden (I guess not, since this was their pick of the week DVD)? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it will be very Zen if we do.

I don’t know if I’m feeling quite so Zen in this section. Well, that was Zen and now is now, I suppose.

What a short paragraph that was. Very Zen, if you ask me. Speaking of Zen, this morning I’ll be arising bright and early and also early and bright and I will be doing our musical theater workshop. Today is the start of the duet performances, which I’m looking forward to. I’m going to take notes but not give them until everyone is finished. Zen, at some point during the day, Tammy, Matt, and I will do a quick line-through, just to get back in shape to resume performances on our final weekend. Zen, I have to finish entering the last of the fixes to the musical, and also finish the lyric of the finale. Then we’ll be in some sort of shape for our reading next week.

Last night we broke our former monthly record for postings – I don’t know what this month’s tally will be yet, but we are currently almost 100 posts over our former monthly record, which was in January 2005.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do all of the above, I must do some errands, collect some packages, ship some store orders and, as The King would say, etc. etc. etc. I must also eat something interesting and very Zen. Plus, I’m hoping to take in a DVD or two in the evening hours. Today’s topic of discussion: What wacky or interesting things like Zen have you tried during your life? Things like EST and Primal Scream and all that sort of stuff. We want to hear details. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
