TOMORROW’S NOTES TODAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it occurs to me that every evening I write tomorrow’s notes today, and today is no exception. Today I once again will write tomorrow’s notes. Just once I’d like to write today’s notes tomorrow, just for a change of pace. Conversely, I wouldn’t mind writing yesterday’s notes a week from Tuesday, but then the whole affair would become quite sordid and terribly confusing. I no longer have a clew as to what the HELL I’m going on about. All I know is that I have a day off today and I shall enjoy it to the max, to use the parlance of the 1980s. Speaking of the 1980s, yesterday was a pretty darn nice day. It began with me waking up. That was pretty darn nice. Then, surprise of surprises, I jogged. That was surprising and it was pretty darn nice that I didn’t have a heart attack and fall over in the street. After that, I went to rehearsal, where we did a run-through. I had very few notes. I then toddled off to the theater to give the lighting script to the gentleman who’ll be doing the lighting, plus I answered some questions regarding the video shoot and placement of speakers and such. We’re all very anxious to get into the theater, which happens tomorrow. After the meeting, Miss Adriana Patti (who, of course, is assisting me on this show, as she did on The Brain) and I went to Islands, a restaurant I’m very fond of. I had the Big Wave with bacon and cheese and we split some of their incredibly incredible french fries. And for the first time ever, Miss Patti finished her meal before I did (she had some sort of chicken sandwich). After luncheon, we returned to the rehearsal hall to check out the makeup for the characters and to do a little mini-photo shoot. They looked great in makeup and costume, I must say. After that, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD. Since yesterday’s topic of discussion was desert island films, I watched one of my key desert island films – Mr. Charles Chaplin in City Lights. For me, City Lights is poetry on film. Funny as all get out, and an ending that is one of the most touching and beautiful in all of cinema. I never tire of this masterpiece and if, for some reason, you haven’t been on the planet Earth and have missed it, buy it, watch it, love it. The transfer could be better – it’s a bit on the dark side and it’s cropped more than the first DVD, which was an Image release. The Image transfer is also only decent – much grayer, but brighter.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below before I start writing next week’s notes yesterday.

So, what will I be doing on my day off? Not having a day off, basically. I must take a drive out to Glendale to bring to a close the favor I did for Mr. Rupert Holmes. I then must ship some CDs, including a huge amazon order (IF the repressing of the Skinner/Ripley CDs arrives – it was supposed to be here Friday, then yesterday). I have quite a few other errands to run and then, maybe in mid-afternoon, I’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the day, although I’d like to get some writing in, too.

I hope to see a mockup of the Brain booklet today, and the sound files should be on their way to the mastering guy. I’m trying to get this up for preorder by the end of next week – we’ll see if that happens.

Tomorrow begins our long days at the theater. I start at ten, writing the light cues with our lighting guy. Then, somewhere around two, after everything is loaded in, we’ll do our first run-through in the theater. Depending on how that goes, we may do a second one before we wrap for the day. If there are any hainsies/kimlets or lurkers with kids who’d like to see the show, just drop me an e-mail at bruce@haineshisway.com and I’ll comp you in.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, write, do errands, and take some of the day off. Today’s topic of discussion: Yesterday, we had our desert island movies. Today, our desert island music – what ten CDs could you absolutely not be without? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we get tomorrow’s notes today. No, that’s not right. We get today’s notes tomorrow. No, that’s not right. No, by the time they’re posted they will be today’s notes today.
