SPELLING OUT OUR NEEDS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s Monday, the first real rehearsal day after three days of music rehearsals. Today we stage the opening number, the opening of the second act, the finale ultimo, and the act one closer. While that seems like a lot, it’s really all variations on the opening. But, more about that in a bit. Speaking of a bit, yesterday was a most relaxing day and just the kind of day I needed. I managed to get a decent night’s sleep, and then I got up and did some stuff on the Internet, after which I walked a mile to my production meeting. It was a bit nutty, this meeting, as reps of all seven shows that are performing in the Acorn were there. We all spelled out our needs (O-U-R N-E-E-D-S). I guess they didn’t want to misspell “our needs,” so I’m glad we were able to spell it out for them. The meeting was long, but all points were addressed and it was nice to put faces with the various and sundried NYMF folks. After that, I walked back home and did some more stuff on the Internet whilst relaxing and listening to various and sundried bossa nova music. Then, I toddled off to sup with our newly arrived Miss Patti, and we discussed this week’s schedule, and then FJL came by to visit. We ate at a nice restaurant on Tenth and 43rd called Mr. Biggs. The various and sundried foodstuffs were quite tasty. And walking there, I passed a place that FJL had taken me to, last year, I think, called 44 and X or something like it. I stopped and looked at the menu and the minute I did I realized that I’d had an amazing meal there – buttermilk fried chicken and mac and cheese that was out of this world, so I’ll definitely be eating there during this trip. After dinner, I took a mile walk, and then came home, where I did some stuff on the Internet and relaxed some more. I also sat on my bed like so much fish and attempted to watch some network television, something I never do.

Last night, I watched the final fifteen minutes of some excruciating reality show entitled Big Brother 8 – I shudder to think that there were seven others. I don’t know or care what it’s about, but having worked on several reality shows, I can only tell you that the fakery on this show is appalling. There was one moment that was absolutely the nadir of anything I’ve seen on TV – a young girl who was voted off (I think that’s what happened), in her bedroom (on camera, of course), weeping, and prying to God to make her strong so she could handle it. I almost threw up on the ground. I then voted the entire show off my TV. I then watched fifteen minutes of what I gather is a hit television program entitled Cold Case. I had to turn it off because I couldn’t stomach the “hip” direction (hip for TV, which means about two years out of fashion), and the staggeringly boring cast of regulars. If this is what passes for a hit show these days, then I just don’t know what. Perry Mason it ain’t. I must say, there are about six hundred channels and I couldn’t find one damn thing to watch, so I just went back to Miss Astrud Gilberto, which put me in a fine mood.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m going to try to get to bed a little earlier this evening, so I can be especially fresh and perky for our ten o’clock rehearsal. I’m already trying to figure out where to sup after said rehearsal. In the meantime, I think I’ll spell out our needs (O-U-R N-E-E-D-S).

I’m very excited to be getting the numbers on their feet again, and I’m even more excited to watch our choreographer do The Brain Tap (tomorrow, I think), and I’m chomping at the bit to get to the book scenes, too.

Tomorrow night, I’m looking forward to seeing Skip Kennon’s show, which FJL was kind enough to arrange tickets for. And I may actually try to see a Broadway show or, even better, The Fantasticks. I think I’ll call our very own Harvey Schmidt and have him arrange some house seats. I haven’t seen the show in quite some time, the last viewing being at the Sullivan Street Theater. I’d like to see Xanadu, and I can definitely get house seats, and I’d like to see Legally Blonde, but they’re just so damned expensive and I’m trying to be frugal and put every penny towards our show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse all the livelong day, spell out our needs (O-U-R N-E-E-D-S), and then sup somewhere fun and interesting. Today’s topic of discussion: After watching those awful TV shows of last evening (which included some horrible cliché-ridden thing called Shark), tell me your favorite current TV shows, what you like about it, and which, knowing my likes and dislikes, you think I’d enjoy. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? We shall.
