REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED WITH COLD SESAME NOODLES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, revenge is a dish best served with cold sesame noodles. That’s not right, is it? Is it revenge is a dish best served with noodles? No, that’s not it either. Is it revenge is best served with a dish that’s cold? No, no, no (that is three nos). Perhaps it’s sesame noodles is a dish best served with revenge. Yes, I think that might be it. What the HELL am I talking about? What’s all this about revenge and cold dishes and sesame noodles? I think I had a point at some point but now the point is gone and thus this entire paragraph is pointless. Wait a minute – is it revenge is a noodle with sesame served cold in a dish? Speaking of cold sesame noodles, yesterday I had some. But first, I was happy to get another excellent night of blessed sleep, albeit one plagued with very odd dreams. I got to sleep in an extra half-hour, and then, after doing my morning ablutions, I toddled off to rehearsal. We began our day with a very smooth but lifeless and somewhat forced run-through. I gave notes, then we all lunched, then we came back, ran a few little things, and then did a second run-through, which was smooth and actually had some life in it. I was trying to do two run-throughs a day if possible, but I’ve changed my mind and now we’ll do one and then work on trouble spots. Part of the problem is that the show is in very good shape in terms of smoothness, and everyone just needs an audience right now. So, it’s now my job to try and keep everyone moving forward and keeping things fresh and not forced, trying to elicit laughs from a few people who’ve seen it too many times. I mean, we’re always a good audience, but they need the real deal and, of course, they’ll have it in six days.

At the end of rehearsal, we had a surprise visit from dear reader Jose, so he, Cason, BJ, and I toddled off to a Chinese restaurant that Jose recommended. Whilst there, I had the most yummilicous cold sesame noodles ever, and some great extra-crispy orange chicken. I’ll be returning to the jernt, perhaps even this very evening.

After that, I came home, answered some e-mails, made some telephonic calls, and stretched out on Ye Olde Bed and flipped around the TV dial. I watched some horrid woman named Nancy Grace, who was “reporting” on a police killing in Florida. To say she was shameless would be a gross understatement – fanning flames, already calling for the death penalty before the suspect is even found, spouting off without even knowing any of the facts, well, she’s what TV news has become and the fact that this woman earns a living from this is nauseating and astonishing, in that order. I also watched Robert Osborne interviewing Norman Jewison. I cannot look at Mr. Osborne anymore, because all his facial work has made him look very strange. Mr. Jewison was charming, although, that said, I’m not a huge fan – I do like The Cincinnati Kid and In The Heat Of The Night very much, but I really don’t care for Fiddler and Moonstruck, one of his most beloved films, leaves me cold, like a dish of revenge.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because shortly I will take my dose of Ny-Quil (I’m hoping this will get me another good night’s sleep, and that I won’t need to take any more), and get my beauty sleep.

Wait a minute – Revenge Of The Cold Sesame Noodles? No, that sounds like a Bert I. Gordon film. Today, we once again start at ten-thirty. I’m going to give notes from our second run-through of yesterday, and then we’re going to run all the scenes and numbers that those notes involve. We’ll run each until we’re all comfortable in that we’ve got it on the right track. After lunch, we’ll do a full run-through. I won’t get to take a full lunch, as I have to record some voice-over stuff used in the show.

I don’t really have plans in the evening, although I may have to go back to that Chinese place for more cold sesame noodles. We shall see.

Saturday, the first hour or two will be spent on costume and Brain issues, then we’ll see if we can get a run-through in. Sunday is the cast’s day off, but not one for me, as we are going into the theater to do as much moving in and tech-related stuff as we can. The most important thing that day will be hanging and focusing the projector, and programming the light and sound boards, and maybe even writing as many of the general light cues as we can. It will take a tiny bit of the insanity off our opening night, where we come into the theater at nine-thirty in the morning and work until five – that’s all the time we have to tech the show, get the cast used to actually doing the show on the stage (and dealing with the wings and all that stuff), running light and sound cues, and getting the band and vocal mics blended and sounding good. It’s madness, of course, but that’s NYMF for you. I will say right now, that unless things change a little, after this is all over I’m going to write a little something about the experience – perhaps I’ll call it NYMF Errant, Or The Brain From Planet NYMF. We shall see.

Now wait just a darned minute. We’d all better put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, we’d all better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, we’d all better dance the Hora or the Samba, because today is the birthday of dear reader Singdaw – his first here at haineshisway.com. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Singdaw. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER SINGDAW!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse and fix things that need fixing, record voice-overs, do a run-through, and have some supper. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player. I have nothing in any player, so it’s your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and I just want those people who need to know, to know that revenge is a dish best served with cold sesame noodles and boy could there be a lot of cold sesame noodles – there’s a little song in The Brain From Planet X entitled Things Are Gonna Be Changing Around Here – let’s hope it’s prophetic. And there we have an enigmatic epigram.
