KEEPING ABREAST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sucking on a Vick’s cough drop (cherry-flavored) whilst beginning these here notes. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you read such a sentence? Nowhere, that’s where. I am very happy that it’s the weekend, but I find it hard to believe that just last week I was in New York, New York preparing for our final performance of The Brain From Planet X. I have managed to catch up on my sleep – just what up was doing on my sleep I have no idea. I have managed to acquire a hacking cough, enough phlegm to choke a horse, and I’ve begun work in earnest for the fundraiser. Do you know that if you split apart the word earnest you’d have ear nest. I don’t like the sound of ear nest, do you? Frankly, it skeeves me. Did you know that either earnest or ear nest anagrammed is eastern? Did you know that I have no clew as to what the HELL I’m talking about? Speaking of what I’m talking about, yesterday was another wacko day, but I suppose a productive one. Our choreographer, Adam Cates, finished staging the opening number (with five of the eight ensemble people this time) and his assistant videotaped it and will be able to put the remaining three men into it in short order. Then he mapped out Bruce Vilanch’s number, in which he’s backed by four men – three girls stood in for the missing three men (we only had one today) and it’s very cute – I’ll work with Bruce on his stuff. Then we had a very long production meeting and went over a ton of stuff and we all know what we have to do. One of the key things is finding five to ten helpers who we can give some of these to do items to. After the meeting, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I began to watch a motion picture I TIVOd entitled Tall Story, starring Mr. Anthony Perkins and Miss Jane Fonda (in her first screen role), directed by Mr. Joshua Logan. The last time I saw this film was at the Stadium Theater when it came out. It’s a slight comedy that’s pretty much exactly as I remembered. I didn’t see it all as I fell asleep halfway through, but I saw enough to know that I’d seen enough. Surprisingly for TCM, it was shown in an incorrect aspect ratio (open matte). I then put on a couple of the Esther Williams films in the new DVD box set and was, frankly, astonished by the weakness of the transfers. These should be eye-popping Technicolor, but they’re too dark, with weak contrast and ordinary color. Everyone just overlooks these Warners’ botches – everyone but me, that is.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need my beauty sleep for I have a busy little day ahead of me.

Today I shall be visiting the Hollywood Collector’s Show. I know several folks and, of course, my dealer friends are there, too, one of who has some excellent CDs he owes me. I’ll hang out there for a while, then do some errands, have some chow, and then come home and rest and relax, not necessarily in that order. I also have some organizing to do for Monday, a day in which I’ll be doing major e-blasts and updating our cast list and, for the first time, revealing some of who’s singing what.

Tomorrow, I have to do an interview with the Tolucan Times, which I’m looking forward to. And Monday, we’ll need all excellent vibes and xylophones that funding checks will finally be here – three weeks late. If they are not, I’m afraid we’re going to be faced with the same decision as last week. So, send vibes and xylophones strongly come Monday morning.

Uh oh, we’d all better put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, we’d all better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, we’d all better dance the Hora or the summer samba because today is the birthday of JMK. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to JMK. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO JMK!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, attend a show, eat some foodstuffs, organize, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: When you want to medidate or zone out or relax or calm yourself down, what music do you play to help soothe the savage breast? Or is it soothe the savage beast? Can one have a savage breast? I know one can have or even be a savage beast. And I know that you can beat both a beast and a breast. You can also keep a beast and abreast. Is this a tangent? In any case, your favorite music to relax by.
