MY NEW OBSESSION

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here bright and early and also early and bright. Did you know I had a new obsession? I got through new obsessions every now and then and also every then and now. For example, when I first had Hamburger Hamlet’s nachos that became a minor obsession and I had to have them quite often (as you’ll see). My latest obsession is chocolate Skittles. I’d only ever eaten the fruity Skittles, and I was never obsessed with them. But these chocolate Skittles are ever so yummilicous, with various and sundried chocolate flavors. I’ve been having one bag every day, and they’ve replaced my obsession with the House Of Pies’ peanut butter pie. I suppose if one must have obsessions, food related obsessions are fairly harmless. Speaking of my former obsession with the Hamburger Hamlet nachos, I had them again yesterday for luncheon and boy are they great. It’s just chips, ground beef, cheese, salsa, and guacamole. I’ve also been on a cashew nut kick. Every day I buy a bag of cashew nuts and I kick them from here to eternity and hell and back. It’s ever so much fun. I do love my cashew nuts and I suppose one could call it an obsession. Have any of you been obsessed with nuts? Just asking. Other than eating, I didn’t do much of anything yesterday. I just took a drive to West LA, came back, ate, and did a little bit of work on the computer, work having to do with the next Kritzerland release. And, of course, I sat on my couch like so much fish. Oh, and I did do the long jog.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu-Ray entitled Saawariya, a Bollywood film adapted from Dostoyevsky’s White Nights. Although about thirty minutes too long (like most Bollywood films), this one was reasonably entertaining, with several catchy tunes and some nicely shot musical numbers. The director has an extreme case of Baz Luhrmannitis – visually the film takes its lead from Moulin Rouge. But the Blu-Ray is a stunner, and the sound is fantastic, so if you like Bollywood and Baz, you might want to check it out. It’s usually available for under fifteen bucks. After the movie, I listened to Shrek, The Musical, which I have to say wasn’t to my liking. It just sounds like the sort of theater music I really don’t care for these days, with no real standout tunes and it’s all just typically typical.

I must say it’s wonderful having a working CD player in the car again – it’s enabled me to catch up on my backlog of CDs, although I still have fifty of them sitting here in a big stack. But, I’m working my way through them. I recently listened to the new CD of Jerry Goldsmith’s In Harm’s Way from Intrada. I really am fond of the score and I had the very rare SLC Japanese import. The legend from some people who know nothing is that the import CD was mastered from an LP. Sorry, not possible. It came out long before there were computer programs that made it possible to do LP transfers and deal with ticks and pops and stuff. No, the SLC was from tape and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. The Intrada is from tape, too, but to my ears it sounds like the tapes were not in pristine condition on certain tracks and I, in fact, prefer the import for those tracks.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because she of the Evil Eye will be here all to soon and I must get my beauty sleep.

Today I shall drive about in my motor car, eat something fun, and write liner notes for the new Kritzerland release. I’m sure I’ll watch a few motion pictures on Blu-Ray and I’m equally sure I’ll listen to a few more CDs. I have a bunch of Johnny Mathis two-fers from the 60s which I’m really looking forward to.

Tomorrow I have to organize and map out the next few weeks. Someone wants to fly me in to New York to do some work – not sure exactly when that will happen, but I may try to coordinate it with the Nudie Musical reading, should we decide to go ahead and do the reading in New York. So, sometime between now and October I’ll be coming in – and I suppose I could come in twice, which I’d certainly enjoy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, drive about in my motor car, eat, and sit on my couch like so much fish. Today’s topic of discussion: I’m sure we’ve done this before, but it’s been a while and I’m really curious to hear your choices – what are your favorite caper films – and books, too, but am mostly interested in caper movies. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I continue to satisfy my new obsession.
