Well, dear readers, it’s official. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it’s official. What is official, you might ask, and I might tell you because why should I withhold such information from dear readers such as yourselves? Starting in September, the first Wednesday of each month will be Kritzerland at the Gardenia, the Gardenia being Tom Rolla’s wonderful nightclub and eatery on La Brea and Santa Monica Blvd. Each month we’ll be doing a show – to start the shows will be based on albums I’ve produced, i.e. Lost in Boston, Unsung Musicals, the Unsung composer series, a Bacharach evening, an evening devoted to the Peter Pan and Cinderella albums, a Shakespeare on Broadway evening – all stuff like that, plus new shows based on new ideas. I’m hoping that many of my favorite singers both past and present will take part in the shows. I’m not sure which show we’ll start with, but over the next four weeks we’ll be planning the first three and starting to reach out to performers. I don’t want to load these with fifteen or twenty singers each, so we’ll have between four and eight, and that way each singer can do at least two to three songs, which is lots more fun. I’m going to try and find a couple of people who’d like to help put the shows together, so that everything isn’t all on my shoulders. Anyway, I think it will be really fun and I’m hoping these Wednesday shows will catch on and become something that one must attend. I had a rather pleasantly pleasant day yesterday. My lunch was cancelled, so I just did work on the computer, finally finished addressing boxes, packaged up a few orders and got them shipped out, had several important e-mail exchanges, mostly to do with this benefit I’ll be directing in October, if it all comes to pass. I did some errands and whatnot, and then we had the funniest posting day here at haineshisway.com – things just got completely wacky and we ended up with over five hundred postings. If you missed any of the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs check out yesterday’s posts. Then it was time to have dinner – I went to the Studio CafĂ© and had my drumettes and a scramble that included bacon, onions, and cheese, along with rye toast and a side salad. It was very filling but very yummilicious. After that, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.
Last night, I began watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled A Star is Born, starring Miss Judy Garland and Mr. James Mason, directed by Mr. George Cukor. This is the Ron Haver restoration that includes most of what was cut from the film – at least the soundtrack part, over stills of those scenes. I watched the first hour and I really do love this film a lot. That said, I wish they’d included the version we all saw for many years – just to have it the way it was ultimately released to most of the country – and without all the stills and extra stuff. That way, we’d have had the best of both worlds. Thus far, the image quality is pretty excellent. I wish I could say the same about the sound, but it sounds muffled, like there’s a blanket over the high end. I don’t know why that is, and I don’t remember if the DVD sounded that way – I’ll have to give it a listen. But it would sound much better if they did some EQ work on it – it’s mostly in the beginning, especially the main titles. But it seems to get a little better as the film goes along, and the songs sound fine for the most part. The color is great. I’ll have more to say about the film after I finish it this evening.
After that, I finished listening to a couple of CDs, did some work on the computer and finally called it a day. It didn’t like being called a day, and so I then called it a piece of dog snot. It was much happier.
Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am really tired and really in need of my beauty sleep.
Today, after what I hope will be a good night’s sleep, I will continue the hunt for a new helper, but I’ll also start printing the postage myself. Actually, a friend said they’d be willing to come and help whenever I needed, so I may take advantage of that on Saturday or Sunday. The CDs won’t be here until Tuesday or Wednesday and I really have to have someone on that day – it’s going to be way too much stuff for me to do on my own. I have a lunch meeting at one, and then I have some writing to do.
Tomorrow, it’s more of the same, and then I’m going with Mr. Barry Pearl to a screening of Grease – the sing-a-long at Paramount Studios. Mr. Pearl, of course, plays the role of Doody in the film. That should be fun. On Friday, I have a lot of stuff to do and then a dinner to go to. Not sure what’s happening on the weekend exactly, other than we have to put postage on about 550 boxes.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to jog, continue looking for a new helper, print out some postage, hopefully pick up a package or three, and start figuring out the Kritzerland at the Gardenia first show. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we begin a new adventure – Kritzerland at the Gardenia.
