JEWS AND BASEBALL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I saw an excellent motion picture documentary last night, entitled Jews and Baseball, a film about Jews and baseball, not necessarily in that order. What I enjoy about these things our very own edisaurus works on is that they are simple – no one is trying to show off, and like the best documentaries, they keep sight of the story they’re telling. And it’s an interesting story, well told. The interviews were wonderful (who knew Sandy Koufax was still alive – not me), the historical footage was compelling, and the original score was integral to the film’s success. The two longest segments, Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, were the film’s most successful, I thought. The editing by edisaurus is also key to the film’s success – it never feels like a dry history lesson, and the pace always seems right, both within sequences and overall. How good the film looks really couldn’t be ascertained at the Music Hall, which is so rundown and gross – the ceiling is falling apart, the screen is dirty, and the projection dim and not sharp. I enjoyed seeing edisaurus for the twenty seconds I saw her, but she knew so many people there was no real chance to have any sort of conversation. I didn’t get to see her husband Greg, as he came in just as the movie was starting. I was hoping to hang out a little after the film, but they did a Q&A that just went on and on and I finally had to leave, as I needed to get home and finish prepping for the LACCTAA event today. I know edisaurus spoke of getting together for a meal, but I’ve heard nary a peep from her so I assume it won’t happen. I kind of kept the weekend open, but alas it is, I suppose, not meant to be. I guess I have to be in New York if one wants to sup. That’s where all the real stuff happens. Maybe next time.

Prior to that, I had a perfectly okay day. I got up at nine-thirty after a fitful night of sleep. I went out and did some errands and whatnot, and got back just in time to find out that I’d completely forgotten about a work session with Linda Purl, Greg Harrison, and John Boswell. So, we did that for ninety minutes and had a lot of fun. We sang through songs, chose keys, and then everyone left, after which I went to the mail place to pick up no packages, no mail, and no important envelope. I then came back home, wrote some additional questions for our panelists, wrote their introductions, and my introduction, listened to the rest of the newly-mixed Carrie cues (all of which sound amazing) – we have some really minor tweaking to do on about five cues but basically it’s in great shape and it all can get to the mastering guy on Tuesday, which is one day ahead of our behind schedule. Then The Singer came over and we moseyed on over the hill, had a little supper, and then saw a motion picture documentary entitled Jews and Baseball.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get these here notes posted and I must get my beauty sleep. I must also take an aspirin, as I have the beginning of a headache that I would like to go away as quickly as possible.

Today, she of the Evil Eye will be here bright and early and also early and bright. I’ll shave and shower and then leave. I have to put waters in the motor car, and then I have to stop and get some Ricolas, as I ran out yesterday. Then I’ll mosey on over to LACC and we’ll do our event. I have no idea if we will have a good crowd or not, but I sure hope we do, because if we don’t, this will be the final LACCTAA event. One young actress/singer I know, someone I’ve tried to help by giving her work since she was seventeen, was definitely coming, but wrote me to say some band she is doing something with needs her for rehearsal. I must say that sort of thing not only astonishes me but really irks me. Some band? Does she want to be an actress or a singer with a band? This is a chance to meet six of LA’s most important directors, hear what they have to say, and then meet them. All of them have the ability to hire her, but she’ll be off rehearsing with some band. I just don’t get it, and I honestly think if she doesn’t show up that I’ll be through trying to help her – I see no upside in it if this is how serious she is. I wrote her all of the above in response. Que sera sera, baby.

Tomorrow, I really need to relax a little, and also make sure that everything is ready to go on the remix, and also I have to prep Monday morning’s show CD announcement. I just saw the booklet and inlay card – the booklet’s fine – a little wordier than I care for, and the inlay card was not to my liking at all. We’ll do some further work on it today. The master, however, was great and that’s already on its way to the pressing plant.

Next week is incredibly busy, with much stuff every day, and then Thanksgiving, and then our first Gardenia rehearsal the day after Thanksgiving. Happily, the rehearsal is early, so my day will be free after one.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do an event, do errands and whatnot, eat, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could make a documentary on any subject, what would the subject be and why that subject? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I’ll probably dream of both Jews and Baseball.
