BRILLIANTLY ILLUMINATING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I want to write something brilliantly illuminating that will make people agog, simply agog. However, these are the notes and since I’ve never written anything that was remotely brilliantly illuminating I suppose we’ll have to settle for the usual blather. The Usual Blather – that’s the title of my next novel. Yes, I feel we should have the usual blather and plenty of it. Mind you, I can write some brilliantly illuminating usual blather, such as the story of The Randy Vicar and the Seersucker Suit. But I shan’t because I have notes to write and write them I must so I can get some rest. Whatever it was I had three weeks ago will not vacate the premises. I’ve heard promises of vacating the premises but the premises promises have fallen on deaf ears or, at the very least, deaf knees. Premises, Promises, one of my favorite musical comedies. Deaf Knees, one of my favorite punk rock groups. Where was I? Oh, yes, the lingering thing that will not vacate the premises. I’m still a bit stuffed up, I still don’t feel quite up to snuff and it’s quite annoyingly annoying. Yesterday, for example, I was quite stuffed up – not sick, mind you, but still coughing after all this time. I did get a pretty good night’s sleep, which was pretty good. I got up, never really had a chance to go through the fifty e-mails that were waiting for me, as I had to go and do some errands and whatnot, and then our very own Mr. Nick Redman arrived bearing CDs and we had a very nice chat. He has embarked on a new endeavor and will be issuing limited edition DVD releases of some great Fox catalog titles – first up on March 15 is The Kremlin Letter – I’ve never actually seen the film, so I’m very much looking forward to it and all the subsequent releases (one a month for the first few months – then they may go to two). After that, I went and had some bacon and eggs, picked up three count them three packages and then began doing an edit road map for an upcoming project – not coming for a month or so, but I’m really trying to get ahead and get some of these things done. This one was not easy as it required me to watch the film on the computer, then locate the music, then make a sequence. The problem with this particular film is that it must have had some post-production problems and re-editing because very little of the music was used in the form it was written, which makes trying to figure out the puzzle really difficult. They ended up using the same cues over and over again in varying lengths and several cues aren’t in the film at all – so I had to puzzle it all out, try a few different things, and guess where the missing cues might go – basically when doing the latter I just try and make an interesting musical sequence. There are a couple of source music cues that I decided to use in the body of the score because they’re necessary diversions from a very lush, symphonic score that’s very Mahler-esque – one needs a bit of brevity a couple of times. It took me close to four hours but I got it done and it plays really well, I think.

Then I had to go do a radio interview with our very own Mr. Donald Feltham, who hosts The Broadway Radio Show right here on haineshisway.com, which, I may add, is the longest-running radio show with a DJ in Internet history. This is Donald’s tenth year, and prior to the show being on this here site it was, of course, on my former label’s site. He’s done close to four-hundred radio shows for us and if there’s anyone still out there who hasn’t discovered the joy of Donald’s show, there’s a link to it right over there on the left so get off your butt cheeks and give it a listen – Donald is one of the most charming and knowledgeable musical theater people in the world. We did a show about our Gone With The Wind release, and it was all quite irreverent and a lot of fun – I believe it will go live on Sunday. And in a few weeks, we’ll be doing a radio show devoted to Kritzerland at the Gardenia, with some special guests.

After that, I finally came home, ate a matzo, and finally went through all the e-mails I hadn’t seen. And then it was time to write these here notes. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need my beauty sleep and besides I feel like I’m on the verge of being brilliantly illuminating.

Today, I will be working with the new helper – we have a bunch of stuff to ship, some other business to deal with, and then she has to do all the Audrey Rose labels and postage – she can do some of it today and some of it over the weekend, but it’s all got to be ready to go for the Monday arrival of the CDs. I’m sure I’ll eat something light and amusing, and I’m really going to try and do a jog of some sort. I will also hopefully pick up a package or two as well as hopefully pick up an important envelope.

The weekend should be light and airy – I’ll be doing dinner at Genghis Cohen either tomorrow or Sunday, just haven’t decided yet. And I have to pull charts for the next Gardenia show, choose songs, and cast it – we have two people set so far, so that’s good.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, work with the helper, ship packages, eat something light and amusing, hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, and then relax and watch a motion picture. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, various and sundried Kritzerland things, plus some of the soundtracks that Nick gave me. Blu and Ray – Fritz Lang’s You Only Live Once, an import disc from France, and Bambi. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I’m quite certain that I will be brilliantly illuminating in my slumber.
