CUPCAKES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I had a wonderful, relaxing, stress-free day, just doing whatever the HELL I felt like doing, which wasn’t much. I don’t know about you dear readers, but I love that kind of a day and I think I’d been long overdue to have one. I was awakened by the ringing of the telephonic device, but I’d left the telephone by the computer so I did not answer it. It was 9:45, so I got eight and a half hours of sleep. I got up, and saw that the gas station had called to tell me my new tire was in. At some point a few days ago, I’d run over a nail and it had gone into the tire in a place where plugging it is not safe enough. So, I drove over to the station and they put the new tire on. After that, I came back home and did the four-mile jog and I have to say it was an absolutely gloriously beautiful, sunny day – this, of course, flying in the face of the dire predictions of rain on Thanksgiving and yesterday – as always, the LA weather people need to remove their collective heads from their collective rear ends.

I had a chopped salad and a bagel for my meal o’ the day, then picked up one teeny-tiny package but no important envelope. And then I lost just a tiny bit of my sanity and purchased three count them three cupcakes. Two peanut butter, and one coconut. They’re not too big, but still, it was overkill and I will admit to eating all three of them all up. But, given the four-mile jog and the very light meal, hopefully it didn’t do any damage. And then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched about four of the Maigret movies and I’m just having the best time with them. First of all, they are wonderfully cast – every actor is terrific. The music by Laurent Petitgirard is great, it’s shot on film, it’s stylishly directed and produced, and, of course, the stories are really good. Again, it’s not about who is the killer or the culprit – it’s pretty easy to figure that out early on, although it’s usually not quite that simple. It’s about the characters and their relationships and hidden secrets – and watching each of these play out as Maigret just keeps pecking away until he knows all the ins and outs, is just wonderful viewing. Thus far, there hasn’t been a dud among them, although my favorites so far are the first three I watched, mostly because they all feature Maigret out of his jurisdiction (I don’t know what the thinking is on these five volumes of this show, but they’re totally not chronological – nowhere near – the order just jumps around from the 90s to the end of the show in 2005. When I’ve finished this set, I’ll get volume two, which contains some of the earliest of the shows. The transfer quality can vary, but most look really good.

At some point, I had some chicken noodle soup (from a can) and an apple. At some point, I listened to the CD that was in the package I’d picked up – a collection of the Laurent Petitgirard Maigret music – a terrific CD. I sent an eBlast about Lost and Unsung, too. I also did an event page for the December Kritzerland at the Gardenia show, which features Dan Callaway, Zachary Ford, Juliana Hansen, Melody Hollis, Kim Huber, and Alet Taylor, along with the historic reuniting of three of the original Promises, Promises pit singers (the fourth original passed away) and one of the replacement pit singers – Kelly Britt, Ilene Graff, Margot Hanson, and Illona Simon-Muller – they will, of course, be recreating for the first time in forty years, Turkey Lurkey Time.

And I wrote a rather long missive to someone I’ve had no contact with for ten years – I wrote this someone on Facebook, just alerting this someone about what my twelfth book will be and that I’ll be discussing something pertaining to this person – and I would just like to clear the air a little and have a conversation so that I can perhaps write something balanced rather than skewed the way I know I will skew it if I have no response. In fact, if I have no response, I’ll probably include the missive I wrote, as I think it’s interesting.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am tired (I have to say, I dozed off more than ten times during the day and evening) and I must try and get another good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after another good night’s beauty sleep. I have to do the blurb and prep everything for the cast album announcement next week – looks like it might be on Tuesday if I can get everything ready by then. I’ll do the four-mile jog, I’ll eat something light but amusing (and no cupcakes), I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, and I’ll watch another couple of Maigret episodes. Then I see a play in the evening.

Tomorrow, we have a short Gardenia rehearsal, otherwise it’s more relaxing and watching as well as watching and relaxing. And then we begin – tech rehearsal, dress rehearsal with an audience, and then opening night. We’ll need all the excellent vibes and xylophones you can send, especially for my health and my voice to hold out for the entire run. Send those vibes and xylophones right away.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, write a blurb and prep, eat, watch, and then see a play. Today’s topic of discussion: What are the best cupcakes you’ve ever had and what made them so damn good? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall eat no more cupcakes.
