THE POLISH TOBACCONIST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, how can it be Thursday already? This week is flying by, like a gazelle riding a polo pony. Does anyone still ride a polo pony? Does anyone still wear a hat? I myself have never ridden a polo pony but have worn a hat. Did you know, for example, that hat spelled backwards is tah? Did you know, for example, that polo pony spelled backward is ynop olop, which sounds like a Polish tobacconist. What the HELL am I talking about? I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you find a paragraph with polo pony and tobacconist in the same sentence. Nowhere, that’s where. And let’s keep it that way.

Yesterday was a most busy day, but mostly a fun one except when it wasn’t fun. I got up earlier than I wanted to thanks to the incessant ringing of the telephonic device. Once up, I answered e-mails and continued trying to finish casting the last of the roles for Outside The Box. But then I got word that one of our actresses was dropping out – this after she called me the other day after some miscommunication led me to believe she couldn’t do it, assuring me she REALLY wanted to do it and that she’d do whatever was necessary. Today, that changed and I wish she’d just let it go two days ago, because not only am I now in a crunch, but she was the focus of the set-up scene. So, not only do I have to replace her, I now have to rewrite those three pages. What a drag that is. And I have no clew where to turn, actress-wise. It’s a very specific type and I really need whoever it is to have similar kinds of credits to the other actress. Crazy, but we are now booked in stone for two days next week and so we’ll have to do what we’ll have to do. That was really the only irritant of the day, but it was a doozy. I had a six hundred calorie lunch at the Daily Grill, then paid an obscene number of Kritzerland bills, then picked up a few packages, then came home. I sent out the Outside The Box remaining music and tracks to those that needed them, and then Juliana arrived for our rehearsal.

Basically we just started at the top of her show. She did her patter and sang acapella (today we start working with a rehearsal CD). We made cuts to several portions of the patter, and I gave her some movement, so now everything is sketched out. The structure and material are sound, and it’s going to be quite an entertaining show. So, from now till show time we just work on performance and honing everything to make sure she’s at the top of her game.

After rehearsal, I did some more work on the computer, then went to the engineer’s house to begin comping vocals. Comping vocals is very tedious work – I sit and listen to every take, and while each take is playing I figure out which lines will be used from what take. Once I have heard everything and have a rough road map, we begin to assemble the comped track. That is also tedious, because at that point I hear whether the parts of the road map are seamless and making an honest and of a piece vocal. Then I do the intricate detail work. If necessary, I’ll replace words within a line from another take, sometimes even syllables. Then, when it’s all together, we listen to it – usually it’s fine, but sometimes we tweak a thing or two. So, we were able to get six songs done in three hours and the vocals sound great. Now he’ll finesse those mixes and send them to me and I’ll further finesse them next week. Hopefully, we’ll do six more tomorrow night (although I think there’s something happening tomorrow night, but again, if something is I’ve forgotten to write it down) – but I’ll get out of it, whatever it is, because we must finish this. Then we’ll complete whatever isn’t finished on Sunday, then we’ll do our final nitpicking in the evenings next week.

After that, I stopped at the Subway and got a spicy Eyetalian sandwich, as I was starving. I came home and ate it all up. It was quite yummilicious. Then I had to listen to some music and approve an upcoming project. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I have a rehearsal with Juliana at ten, then I have to finish casting – that’s of the utmost importance and I will not stop until both roles are cast. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and then I’m seeing The Master in the evening.

Tomorrow is really busy and then we’ll hopefully comp six more vocals, which will only leave three or four for Sunday. The weekend is busy with things to see, places to go, and rehearsals. Next week is insane, with rehearsals every day and then our two-day shoot.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse, finish casting, rewrite if I must, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and see a motion picture. Today’s topic of discussion: Have you ever ridden a horse? And what sports were you either most adept at or which you really enjoyed. My answer re sports is simple: None. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream or riding a polo pony to the Polish tobacconist.
