December 20, 2012:

MY NEW PHILOSOPHY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have been quite intrigued by my late entry into the world of Miss Ayn Rand, but what a fascinating and brilliant woman she was. I watched another documentary, this one almost specifically about Atlas Shrugged and the fact that in 1957 Miss Rand predicted just about everything that is happening today in terms of government and business. She christened her philosophy Objectivism. So, I’ve decided I’m going to create my own philosophy and call it Objectionism, said philosophy being that human beings need to object, that they were born to object. I put my new philosophy into play yesterday. When my server asked me what I was having for lunch, I said, “I object.” She had no clew as to what that meant and she retorted, “Huh?” to which I said, “That’s my new philosophy – Objectionism.” Then I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, which I feel is part and parcel of my new philosophy for reasons that escape me at the moment. All day long, I objected to everything. At one point I came upon an object and I said, “I object to this object.” I felt that was quite pithy and yet it espoused my new philosophy – Objectionism. I think my new philosophy will catch on and I will be quite famous and spoken about in hushed tones of burnt umber. Of course, I object to hushed tones of burnt umber because that’s my new philosophy. You know, if anyone has a clew as to what the HELL I’m talking about, please don’t mention it because if you do I shall object – vociferously.

Well, then. Yesterday was kind of a day. I was up at six-thirty and to the car place by seven-thirty. It was my thirty-month servicing and I was told it would take an hour and so I just sat there like so much fish for an hour, and my motor car was indeed ready and serviced and washed one hour later. Best of all, the motor car was given a perfect bill of health. I also received the e-mail I needed to receive and it did immediately make the day bright. Then I came back home, did some work on the computer, printed out some orders from the big Kritzerland sale, did some more organizing, and the CD closet is now clean and you can actually walk in and look at CDs. Then I had a bacon cheeseburger and no fries or onion rings. Then I came home for a bit, then went to the mail place and picked up a few packages. I wrote an obscene number of Kritzerland checks, and then sent all the audio samples for what will hopefully be our final three releases of 2012. I’m still waiting for approval of the second title and frankly if it doesn’t come maybe I’ll just make this a two CD release and do the other title the first week of the New Year – we shall see. I’ll write another nice e-mail tomorrow afternoon if I haven’t heard anything. Then I had a nice dust-up with Fed Ex, who did not deliver the package they were supposed to. See the posts of yesterday, for it is too convoluted to go into in these here notes. I had two annoying conversations with Fed Ex, and in the second I insisted that I be allowed to drive to where the package is and pick it up. I was told that was fine, but before I do I will call again to make sure it’s there and waiting for me. I’ve also alerted other DGA members as to what’s happening so that perhaps a complaint can be lodged or at least the studios can be made aware. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

After I finished the Ayn Rand documentary, the helper came over and we did a Costco run (we were going to do it today, but it was easier for her to do it last night). It was pretty crowded there, but we were in and out in forty-five minutes or so. I got a few things for the Christmas Eve Do and a few snacks just to have around the house. I buy the stuff for the actual food I make at Gelson’s, which I’ll do on Sunday evening. Then I watched the first twenty minutes of a Spaghetti western entitled The Big Gundown, a restored and uncut version of the Eyetalian film starring Lee Van Cleef. I’ve never seen it, actually, but have heard it’s pretty terrific, and I’ve had the score for ages and it’s a great Morricone score. So far it’s very good. I’m watching the English language version because that’s how it was shown here and because all the actors are mouthing the English dialogue. But every time one of the bits that had been cut for the film’s US release comes up, it goes to Eyetalian with English subtitles. It’s intriguing to watch because sometimes the cuts are parts of lines and sometimes a bit more than that. The quality looks very good so far.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must get some beauty sleep or I shall turn quite ornery although I’ll object to doing so.

Today, I have an appointment at eleven to see Teddy for my end of 2012 haircut, which I really need since my hair is starting to flip up in most unnatural ways. I object to it, being an Objectionist, to no avail. After that, I’ll come back to the San Fernando Valley, eat something light but amusing, and then hopefully pick up some packages, after which I’ll make some book notes (I made some good ones yesterday), and then relax.

Tomorrow, I go to the editing room to get the hard drive with the locked episode four, then Jane Lanier will be bringing ten boxes of her amazing caramels. I’m quite certain that I shall eat VERY lightly because I know I’ll have to have five or six of the caramels immediately. And as the day ends, we hope we’ll be announcing our new titles and that’s it for this year – I get the next two weeks off and am spending them completely doing only what I feel like doing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, see Teddy, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, make notes, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Two topics – what philosophies appeal to you and why? And what are your favorite performances of 2012 – those actors who really stood out for you, whether on stage or screen or TV. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall object to everything because that’s my new philosophy.
