TWO JEWS IN A ROOM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, there I was, at a little birthday bash for soundtrack record producer Ford Thaxton, at his favorite place of places, Reno’s, a small Eyetalian jernt on Ventura Blvd. and Tujunga. I was there with our very own Mr. Nick Redman and his ever-lovin’ Julie Kirgo. I said hi to lots of folks I knew, including the wonderful composer, Lee Holdridge, who I’ve known since the Bay Cities days. So, there I was meeting people, and this very nice Asian gal introduces herself and I automatically love her energy and humor. I ask her what her name is and she says “Joo,” which of course I hear as “Jew.” Well, that was all I needed and we started an Abbott and Costello routine that was really amusing and she kept up with me every step of the way. I said, “You’re Joo? I’m Jew, too. We’re two Jews in a room.” She said, “Three Jews, my friend is also a Jew.” I said, “She’s out, there can only be two Jews in a room.” She turned to her friend and said, “You’re out.” Her friend said, “But I was the first Jew besides Joo.” I said, “I’m the third Jew besides Joo and Jew?” And on it went. I LIVE for this stuff. I asked Joo if she was Chinese, and she said she was Korean. A Korean Joo. If I ever have another child I am naming it Joo.

We stayed about thirty minutes, but we had made prior dinner plans so we went over to a nearby Thai jernt that Nick loves and had our meal. The conversation was sparkling and the food was really good. I’ve eaten at this Thai jernt a few times in the last twenty years. For some reason it’s never on my radar, but the food is fantastic and I’ll be coming back soon. I had my usual Thai things – a Thai salad with peanut dressing, Pad Thai, and cashew chicken. Nick had some spicy string beans and chicken thing, and Julie had some salad with beef thing. They both tasted the cashew chicken and Pad Thai, too. So, a fun birthday bash with Ford Thaxton, and a lovely meal with two of my favorite people. As the Gershwins said, who could ask for anything more.

And yet, there was more. Prior to all that, I got up when she of the Evil Eye rang Ye Olde Doorbelle. I answered some e-mails, then I went on my merry way to kill some time at Jerry’s. My motor car almost didn’t start – it’s been a little slow starting all week, but I attributed that to the cold in the garage and because I just got a new battery a year ago. I drove over to the local 76 station and they ascertained immediately that the battery was indeed the problem – it was on its last legs. Since I hadn’t paid for the battery last year, and since I didn’t really want to use the warranty and get a new version of a battery that would die in a year, I let the 76 station put in a new battery. It has a two-year warranty. Whilst they were doing that, I walked over to Jerry’s and had some bacon and eggs and toast and tomatoes, and played on my phone. After I finished, I had a nice chat with comic Johnny Dark and I told him that we was laugh out loud hilarious in episode five of Outside the Box, which he was very happy to hear.

Then I walked back to the 76 station, paid for the battery, and was on my merry way. I went to the mail place and there were three count them three packages there, two of which were part of the errant and truant packages (the other was something I ordered two days ago from amazon UK and so packages can get here rather quickly). I came home and immediately did my finessing, futzing and fixing on the previous day’s writing. That took a bit of time, and then I moved on to new pages. I wrote about four very quickly, then took a break and did some other stuff. After that, I wrote about six more pages, then it was time to get ready for the birthday bash and then dinner.

When I got home, I pushed the garage door button in my motor car and the door went halfway up and stopped. I pushed the button again and it came down. I pushed the button again and it did nothing. I got out of the car and used the keypad by the door, and I could hear the motor doing its thing, but the door just sat there like so much fish. So, I parked outside. I wrote a little over two pages, so the total for the day was over twelve and I just began a new chapter. But the wonderful news is that I am now over halfway through with this new book – that is if my predicted length proves to be accurate. Then I Googled and found a garage door repair place in the Valley and called their 24/7 number. Happily they work all seven days and there’s no extra charge for the weekend days. I booked an appointment and the guy will be here between noon and two today. I asked them to make it close to noon if possible, because I have a potential lunch thing.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall be up by ten and then I shall finesse, futz and fix yesterday’s writing, and then I’ll start on new pages. I’ll be happy if I do seven to ten. Then the garage door repair guy will repair the garage door, and then I may or may not have a lunch thing – that’s really going to depend on the garage guy. If he gets there close to noon, then I can definitely do the lunch thing. If it’s closer to two then it might get too close to my work session with a singer. We shall see.

Tomorrow, I write, visit the editing room and then I’m supposed to see an old friend I haven’t seen for close to thirty years – that should be fun if it happens. That will all be done by six, and then I’ll write some more. On Tuesday, I will deliver about eighty more pages to Muse Margaret, and then the rest of the week is writing, casting, choosing songs, getting singers music and mp3s, and some meetings and meals.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finesse, futz and fix, I must write, I must have a garage door repaired (hopefully it’s something simple), I must maybe have a lunch thing, I must have a work session, I must write and I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall be one Jew in a bed.
