THE CONTINENTAL, THE CARIOCA, AND THE TAPIOCA

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle doing The Continental. Does anyone still do The Continental? Does anyone still do The Carioca? Does anyone still do The Tapioca? I think all dear readers should stand up now and do the damn Continental, that’s what I think. Let’s all put on our white tie and tails and do the damn Continental. Then we can all feel very continental and sophisticated and we can drink Gibsons and Gimlets and Manhattans and tell witty stories such as The Randy Vicar and the Shoe Horn. What the HELL am I talking about?

I must tell you that last week it was like summer – temperatures in the 90s. So, imagine my surprise to find it raining when I awoke this morning at nine. Yes, raindrops were fallin’ on the ground. Then it stopped so I went to do a jog, but five blocks into said jog it was drizzling again, so I turned around and jogged home. As soon as I was inside it stopped drizzling. Then the sun started to come out. So, I was almost going to begin the jog again when the sun disappeared and it was drizzling again. I then thought that the weather was purposely TAUNTING me, having SPORT with me. So, I gave up on the jogging idea and instead made telephonic calls, did work on the computer and then I went out and had a sandwich and no fries or onion rings.

After that, I went to the mail place and picked up a couple of packages, one of which was the hardcover copy of the new book. I opened it right then and there and I must say it’s quite a handsome thing. The dust jacket looks really good. I then came home and placed the order for the books. They gave me quite the deal, I must say. So, in about two weeks from now, books should arrive and we’ll get them shipped right out. The little something extra that will come with the book has also been ordered and will arrive a week ahead of the books.

Then I came home, read a bit, and then since the rain had abated I did a three-mile jog. Then I began the arduous task of choosing Noel Coward songs. This required a lot of listening, plus uploading songs into iTunes. I now have a list of about twenty-five songs that I’ll whittle down to about seventeen. Some will end up in put-togethers, too. Some wonderful stuff, and I’m cheating just a little by including a couple of songs from High Spirits – naturally Mr. Coward didn’t write the score for that show (Blane and Martin did, but in the style of Mr. Coward), but it’s based on Coward’s Blithe Spirit and Coward directed it. Still have two people to cast. We have one offer out to a guest star, and if she says yes, we still may go for a second guest star should one become available.

That took quite a while, then I went to Gelson’s and got a tiny thing of mac-and-cheese, some shrimp cocktail shrimp, and some melon balls, after which I came back home and ate it all up. Still, with the jog, definitely under 1200 calories. And right now, as I write these here notes, I’m listening to pitter-patter of the rain falling.

I also watched the latest episode of Mad Men, which I thought was the best of the season. Good pace, good performances and some good plot. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, we can hopefully finish casting – once that happens then I can assign the songs. Otherwise, I shall jog (weather permitting), I shall write some liner notes, I shall eat something light but amusing, I shall do errands and whatnot, I shall hopefully pick up some packages, and relax.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, a work session with the gal who’s doing the Hofstetter audio books, hopefully the contractor people will be here Thursday to walk the house and then get started soon thereafter, hopefully the ghost version of the site will also be up so we can start playing with design and all the new features.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora of The Carioca for today is the birthday of dear reader Danise. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Danise. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER DANISE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog (weather permitting), finish casting, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What is your favorite rainy day activity? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall dance the night away doing The Continental, The Carioca, and The Tapioca or as we like to think of it, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
